I think it's weird - doglegged 1st and 2nd gear ? well then where is 5th not straight up - Ok - it's showing reverse then, Ok where is 3rd - Ok I get it - his shirt is so wrinkled by the seatbelt that 1st and 3rd are touching underneath the seatbelt - Jeez Henry get some clothes that fit you ; P
Allenwrench: besides the t-shirt he’s worn, does not depict a dog legged manual, if you are taking into account the reverse gear, it can’t be called a dog legged, a dog leg manual can only be called in some manual transmission cars whereby the 1st or 5th or 6th or 7th gear is placed downwards, as in from neutral slide it extreme left then down, just like what is seen in today’s perspective on a 7spd manual Aston Martin.
Am I wrong for saying, that Henry Catchpole needs his OWN show? He is the quintessential go-to car guy on the web. Honest, passionate, and very knowledgeable. If there is an Emmy for automotive reporting, he'd win it many times over.
@@viktorpetukhov727 My 991 Carrera Coupe has no sport chrono but my uncle's Convertible has. Guess what: They are exactly the same in a standing quarter mile!
@@Josh_0579 true 911 don’t really need sport chrono it’s just porsches way to spill money I would not spend 3k for it(love porsches I’m just saying what I think)
People always forget about the "20 seconds of fun button" in the center of the Sport Chrono Wheel. Would like to see that demo'd. Here is a trick that very few people know. On PDK, if you pull both paddles simultaneously for a quick second, it will go into neutral, allows you to rev it. To go back into gear, just pull or push either paddle. But, if you are stopped, you must put your foot on the brake, and then pull a paddle to get it back into gear. Yes, it is a trick that few people know.
'Sir' Henry Catchpole, the undisputed knight of sublime automotive journalism An episode with Henry and the Automobile is like an episode of nostalgia having a delectable meal and coffee. I am happy that the 992 still has the Porsche DNA. I am optimistic that the spirit of the Sports car will live and live long for our generation and for our future "The Last car will be a sports car" - Ferry Porsche
I drove one today without the rear wheel steering around a small handling track. I can confirm that the turn in is still very positive versus 991, and the steering is quick and accurate. The ESP calibration is nothing short of amazing, allowing some rotation of the rear to bring the car inline with the steering input.
Don't get how the 991.2 Carrera sport exhaust sounds better than the 992 despite both of them being fitted with turbos. Im curious to see how american variants will sound without the particulate filter. If it still sounds worse, thats mind boggling.
Love most of it, don't mind the turbo much, it's just where the future is headed. I just don't like how the front end looks, otherwise it's a nice upgrade.
I just don't like the interior design at all and that Electric Shaver they refer to as a Shifter. Will hold on to my 991.2. BTW, I always have the Sport Exhaust engaged when I drive:)
Great idea to this video. May I ask how did you find the seat comfort and driving position? I sat in one and thought the accelerator pedal was offset a little compared to 991. Could you please do a similar video for BMW 840i Coupe (rear wheel drive) and compare it to 840d and 850i Xdrive? Many thanks
I think because they would ruin this new interior which is too elegant to be broken apart with plastic shelves that open up to become cup holders. That’s my guess anyway.
Certainly this is a great 991 version, but what happen with the cons ? Nobody want to talk about the Ugly useless Gear knob selector , the synthetic gauges out of the place behind the steering wheel, the Baby Panamera Taillights, the ultra quiet exhaust, the extremely large side mirrors and the extra bulky weight in the car! This 911 looks to be more “Aston Martin” than Porsche! Hopping the manual version will be coming soon! (Own GT3RS and Carrera T)
Yeah you can take three small kids to school. Three medium to large kids not so much I’d say based off of my experience as a kid in the back of my uncles 911!
Is there any artificial sound via the speakers to create a more “immersive driving experience” in the sports exhaust setup? And if so, do we know who at Porsche needs to be executed for that sacrilegious “solution”?
Just out of curiosity, does anyone else hate the *looks* of active aerodinanymics such as the one used on 911's (and AMG GT for example) spoiler? Specially when people park with the spoiler "open" with no fucking reason looking awful. I do love a fixed wing though.
Better is a difficult word to define. In some ways the vantage is better and vice versa. But I would prefer to spend my money on the 911. Because ALL of it is made and perfected by Porsche.
"Is the sports exhaust a must-have option? - Yes, absolutely! The only cars I have driven so far have had the sports exhaust ... and you want to have it on all the time." Sure. Ever thought about where that sound actually comes from when you sit in the car (loudspeakers...)? The car still sounds like shit outside, just check out Janko Lind´s latest drive of the 992, makes a totally different conclusion. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-dl454pgaYjg.html
It's not from the speakers. It's from mechanical valves in the exhaust pipes. Just like the 991.2. I have it on mine but wouldn't spec it if I had the choice.
It becomes more and more evident that car journos do not dare to say the truth in fear of loosing accreditations to the cars. - The have three kids and a 992 - or any 911 ... if you are 6+ ft or 180+ cm, forget the seat behind you. - Does it feel big? Just look at the footage. The car hardly fits the lane. - The infotainment system .... there is no good infotainment system available, at least yet. If you have to take your eyes off from the road, it is not good, it is not driving centered anymore. The best infotainment system is the non-existent. - The styling of the dash ... up to 991.1 Mauer did a good job, after that it’s gone downhill. There is a decreasing number of 911-drivers who think 993 was the last real 911 and an incressing number of 911-drivers who think that 997 was the last real 911. From 991 onwards it is no longer a sports car but a luxurious GT-car and a bit different target audience.
Totally disagree with the noisy exhaust. It is such a smooth engine and sounds amazing when muffler fully engaged. All the fake ignition noise and bypassing just makes it sound broken. Well at least it exposes the driver’s mentality..
Not even close to what I want my 911 to be. There was obviously more focus on the Taycan than on this car. Fake exhaust tips....yeah, move along, only Porsche this ever looked right was the 959.
Personally never been *that* fussed about exhausts, unless they liberate some more power from the engine without droning in my ears on long motorway journeys
Just about to place an order so incredibly grateful for this information. There is only so much you can take away from one test drive in one spec when you're trying not to be an excited kid. Plus with an options list as big as the one for the 992 I'm pleased I agreed with your comments. Thank you!!!
I’ve just placed my deposit for a 992 2S Coupe. Started of with only three extra options … but ended up at 23k! Beware the excited kid :-) What a privilege though!
IMO, sports cars should not have menus. You shouldn't have to fumble through menus to change things. I agree that there should be more buttons on the dash/console to control the more commonly used features.
It’s FAT it doesn’t have a proper engine sound, Porsche’s got a great idea let’s turn the 911 into a Panamera, and make a Panamera coupe which in turn is the already fat 911 😒
Henry Catchpole, amazing. I could watch him review cars all day. Sports exhaust, however, on any Porsche does nothing except annoy your neighbours and makes people think you're a bit of a twat. My 991.1 4S with standard exhaust is pretty loud and sounds wonderful. Cars used to be loud because they were bonkers cars like Ferraris and Lamborghinis etc. Now anyone can have a daft exhaust in any car and make bangs, pops and crackles which is pointless and just sounds silly like all these loud Minis, Ford Fiestas and Abarth 595 you see around.
Well spotted, this is the third video about the 992 with a rattle. The first one was an issue with the sports seat, the second with a door panel not fitting correctly, that kind of thing would drive me nuts on a 10 grand car let alone a 911.
@@Irishesbox11 I had an issue with my dash left speaker (991.2) for months because I was dodging a major complete dash pull off and and reinstall which always results in more annoying noise. My dealer finally took care of it without fail.
Thanks for another great video Henry, I'm always impressed by your journalism! 👍 There's little doubt that August Achleitner and his team at Porsche have done a fabulous job evolving the 911 once again but personally speaking I think that whilst the 992 is technically a superior car, the 991.1 Carrera was and maybe always will be the sweetspot of (non-GT) 911 development - a car that was still naturally aspirated (with that glorious sound, esp with PSE switched on), modern enough to include all that a car really needed, yet still analogue enough in the way it worked/felt and with a duality of character that allowed it to be a reasonably comfortable GT one minute and an engaging sports car the next - best sampled with Sport Chrono & PSE as you suggest for the 992 (or the Power Kit, if you're lucky enough to find one specced that way). The 992 is a technical masterpiece but I would rather they had left the analogue guages in place (with the one MF display as in the 991) and worked to re-engineer an NA engine to meet the latest emission regs (as they now appear to have done). I hate to say it but the door handles should have been left as they were too (like Mercedes did with the latest G-wagon - some things are best left alone).
Great video, thank you! Seems to be a great car overall, but that Braun electric shaver where the gear selector should be still makes me a bit cross-eyed. Wonder if Porsche has some sort of product placement deal with them haha.
Henry, you should try driving the car without the rear wheel steering, you’ll notice a very distinct difference with corner entry speed. The rear feels like it’s actually following the car rather than dragging it around the corner. I’m speaking from 991.2 experience so maybe with wider front 992 difference is not as distinct? But this is THE must-have option.
This the new “Grand Touring” Baby Panamera! Less sporty and more luxurious than previous versions! It’s the Porsche expression of what the new world is wanting! 👍🏻
Suggestion for those having issues seeing outer dials. I opted for the standard sport wheel instead of the GT sport wheel, and I can see the gauges much better. Diameter and feel of the normal multi-function wheel is sublime
I have been a great fan of Lotus cars as I believe that they are now the last bastion of the True Sports car where the focus is on the Driving and the Driver with the mantra still based on Colin Chapman's ideals of Lightness and suspension dynamics. Can't wait to see that episode. Chapman's idea of a driving machine vs that of Ferry Porsche My money is on the Lotus as they are far more purer than the Porsche 911 now
