IMPORTANT!!!! One BIG correction and TIMESAVER . . . IF you are using Mylar and oxygen absorbers, there is ABSOLUTELY NO NEED to send your food through the freezer routine. The oxygen free environment will already take care of any critters. The freezer trip is only needed if you’re putting it in Tupperware or Rubbermaid or something on the shelf. Another bonus when you avoid the freezer, you don’t risk introducing moisture into the food. That is a big issue with keeping foods safe long term.

@dixievixen6045

Recommendation on flour, get you some paper lunch bags, measure out 4-6 cups (whatever bread recipe you commonly use), roll up the bag and put in a vacuum seal bag and seal. That way you don't have to open a whole bag of flour at a time. Extra work, but it lets you only open a small amount. I do the same for potato flakes and oatmeal. Some of those for really long term I then put in a large mylar bag and further seal. Overkill....probably, but if things go really bad, there are no second chances.
@sunshinestatesurvival

You're right about not having second chances! I'd rather do it overkill than not quite good enough.
@james0000

That's roughly how we do it. I don't measure single uses like a single load, but we do about 1600 grams per paper bag, then tape the bag with contents info and a date, then put that in a vacuum bag. Works great!

So, the flour in brown bags then vacuum sealed. Yes or no to an oxygen absorber ?? Would i still need tofreeze 72 hours ?
@james0000
@james0000 2 года назад
@@sarahharris-prewett8035 That's how we do it.. paper bag, fold the top of the bag just once, (we put a vertical strip of painters tape at this point that we already write contents/date info on and allowed to dry, then vacuum seal, then store. You can skip using the tape, we do that to help keep the bag folded how we want to easily put it into the vacuum bag. The idea here is that flour compacts so much that you are getting most of the air out from the vacuum sealing. So much so, that nothing is going to hatch or survive, hence no need to freeze. A bonus from this method is that the super cheap paper bag that you can simply compost or use for some other purpose later also prevents your vacuum seal bag from getting dirty so that after you do cut the bag to recover your flour, the bag can easily be re-used without needing to even be washed :)

The best way I have found to store flour is to place it into paper lunch sacks, fold over the top, then place them in a mylar bag. The oxygen absorber will still be able to work inside the lunch sack as well as outside and no flour dust. Yes, there is a major urgency within me to get things sorted and accumulated and stored. Hey girl, Just wanted to share something I learned recently with the beans. Dry beans will not be good for the long term past a year or so in mylar or vacuum-sealed without being cooked. Everyone says they will not get tender when cooked, no matter how long, they stay kind of hard after a while. Also, the energy it will take to cook them may not be available to spare when the time comes to cook them, this one is just important if you are considering a power outage during a time period. You would waste a lot of propane or wood to cook them for hours. So it is best all the way around to cook them now and then preserve them in a canning jar. I cook mine in the instant pot (pressure setting) for about 30 mins, that leaves them almost done and they will finish cooking in the canner. Again, this is for people who want to go past a year's storage or are concerned with a power outage.
@simplydivine5053

You could also soak the beans which cut down on cook time if you don’t want to use jars that could break.

@@simplydivine5053 Nice, good point. Yes, I'm only cooking them to half done at the moment since canning will finish cooking them. Don't want a jar full of mush. lol. But I will try that way as well. Thanks

@darksunshine5002
@darksunshine5002 2 года назад
@@elizabethcollazo5136 I'm no expert but from what I have heard in my process - Dry beans vacuum-sealed would last about a year and then it will be hard to get them soft to the point we are used to eating them. Canning beans will last up to 5 years or more if kept in a cool dry place. I mean, I never saw my grandma canning in her older age but we sure were eating her canned items. Also just buying the beans already cooked in a tin can will last a very long time and will take no effort. Considering how much the jars, lids, and canner itself cost it may be more beneficial to just buy cans if you find them at a deal. I know amazon has a case of Bush's beans for $12 which is a $1 a can. So beans have many options. I try to prepare for multiple situations so I'm not caught off guard or my food spoils and wastes all our money. Canning food doesn't require any power to keep, so that is my preferred method, but with prices, I have to be picky on what gets canned and what gets vacuum sealed.

@@darksunshine5002 I’ve bought dry beans before to cook up and found I would rather just get canned beans that don’t need the extra soaking. Dry beans are good for crafts though. I don't consider myself a prepper, but at my older age, I do have some experience in planning ahead for a larger family. I sincerely mean this with total respect, but it is my honesty that, I would not necessarily advise even my own offspring to concentrate on building a year's supply of food before adding longer term supplies. Recently I bought two, 2 and 1/4 lbs packs of 80/20 ground chuck for nearly $10 for each pack. So for roughly $20. During that same shopping trip I picked up a 20lb bag of pinto beans for about the same price. I respectfully ask, which was the better deal? Personally, I believe the pinto beans were. There are far more servings in a 20lb bag. They already have a long shelf life, and don't even require a refrigerator or freezer to store them. To my thinking, it is a bonus to know that storing those beans in a Mylar bag would extend their shelf life even years longer. So I would advise my own offspring to first buy what is going to stretch your food supply the furthered, and for the least amount of money. Many people already know that beans and rice together form a complete protein - a nutritional need that most people meet with meats - which are becoming increasingly more difficult to afford. Likewise, peanut butter and whole wheat bread form a complete protein, (although I did just read of a recall involving Jif brand peanut butter, and some people have issues with the gluten in wheat bread). Anyway, I also bought 5lbs of long grain rice during that same (above) shopping trip, and for around $5. Of course, rice also has a fairly long shelf life which, again, can be greatly extended with Mylar bags, no refrigeration needed. And, 10lbs of rice would cost about the same as 2 and 1/4 lbs of the 80/20 ground chuck (mentioned above). In keeping with my belief in procuring dry goods first, the last time I bought all purpose flour I paid just under $8 for a 25lb bag. It, too, has a fairly long shelf life, which can be greatly increased when sealed in Mylar bags, or when otherwise vaccume sealed. Of course, flour is an essential basic. With a few other ingredients, (baking powder or yeast, salt, sugar, etc.), it makes everything from biscuits, bread, gravy, pancakes, tortillas, and chocolate cake, and cookies. It helps stretch the $1, at least for now., and bread - type foods are filling. I respect that you are reaching out to others to forewarn them that they need to plan ahead for the "real" shortages the President recently spoke of. So I hope you don't take my comment in a negative way. I grew up in the country, in a family of eleven. We ate well because my parents grew gardens and some years raised livestock, and because my mother kept certain dry goods on hand as insurance, in a sense. She preserved alot of home grown foods. I have a household of 6 now, and I can't imagine canned goods (first) getting us very far. I cook from scratch on the daily. Because a 14.5 oz can of whatever just wouldn't go very far here.
@shanivaldez2330
@shanivaldez2330 2 года назад
You make some very good points. In the end, however one decides to prep, just make sure you’re doing it and do it consistently. Totally unplanned when I first started prepping, but I started out with all the dry goods first. I’m happy I did. Canned goods, home goods came after. If I was just starting now, I would be getting canned goods, but the dry goods would be a bigger priority as they can be used for so many applications. I didn’t really think about that aspect when I first started (when C started), so I didn’t worry as much about household/canned goods. Fast forward to last summer, everything was getting stocked to the rafters as it became very clear what was about to happen. I can, dehydrate, store in food storage buckets, mylar, mason jars, vacuum sealed bags, large freezers, but it all started with dry goods first. If you do not know how to can, start there. You can get bulk items that you can make shelf stable. This is a time of gathering. It’s overwhelming, and that much more so if you are new to all of this. I feel you. Anything you choose to do with food preservation, make sure you are getting the equipment and supplies now. It’s becoming harder and more expensive to get. I am now branching out with getting equipment for off grid situations, ordering wheat berries in bulk and will get an electric/hand operated mill to grind flour, and gardening, which I am a newbie at. I have a summer CSA share and plan to get as much extras as I can to can. As you mentioned, scratch cooking is going to be really important as convenience foods are going to go out the window. You’re going to need to divert those funds to other things even if you can get the convenience items. For those just starting or short on skills cooking, start learning now, so that you don’t have the added pressure of trying to figure it all out when you don’t have a choice. You’ll be under enough pressure as it is. Burn it to learn it now as Patera from Appalachias homestead says to get it down while we’ve been given the grace we have. So, learn how to make beans from scratch, how to bake bread or make biscuits. Maybe learn some of the depression style meals and simplify your diet. Speaking of depression, I am very worried given that during the depression, people got by because 40% of our population farmed/had gardens. I think that is now down to 2%. So, the dependency that will be on the government, and how in turn they can take advantage of that, is huge. Not a good thing. So, get gardening tools, books, seeds, whatever you need, and start doing what you can to grow and eventually preserve . . . Even if that building/buying a hydroponics unit, or learning how to sprout those seeds (beans and greens) for additional nutrition.

@@shanivaldez2330 , Yes! When World War 'll erupted the gov instructed families to grow "Victory Gardens" so that, the bulk of manufactured foods went to service men. A large majority of men had to be turned away from enlisting due to a childhood of malnutrition during the Great Depression. My father was accepted into the Navy, and served on the USS Enterprise. Still, he said that he primarily ate beans and potatoes throughout his childhood. In 2018 disease finished taking my ability to walk. I had to get help to put out my garden this year. I kept faith, and started over 60 Rutger (good for canning) tomato plants. My 2nd try was successful, as I had to re-discover that tiny tomato plants get leggy and die easily if left in those trays with clear lids too long. Basically, I started my 1st seeds too early. But I'm told this 2nd crop is doing well since transplant. I invested in a bag of triple 12 fertilizer - just a slight palm full mixed in the dirt surrounding each plant, and bury that main stem deeper when transplanting. My 1st incubator was a small fish tank, 100 watt bulb, misting bottle, and 2 thermometers. That was when COVID hit, and I ended up with 9 hens. Of course, a cardboard box could serve as an incubator, too. I'm not liking the hike on my electric bill, so that's a part of my current focus. I've got some gadgets, but I'm looking into solar sources of power. Also, a wood stove. Patara is a wise young lady, and a Cherokee sister. 😊

To keep the dust from getting into the seal area, you can first put things (like the potato flakes) into a Ziploc-type bag.....just don't close it....put the open bag into the mylar bag, then seal it. If the food item comes in a bag (inside the box), you can just use that. Also, consider how many people you'll be feeding at a meal, and tailor the size of your mylar bags to that fact. If you have four pounds of beans in one bag, will you be feeding a whole lot of people at one time? Or will you have to worry with re-sealing the bag, every time you take some out for a meal? We do lot of vacume sealing, too. Heidi, on her Rain Country Homestead channel, shows how to use a brake bleeder to seal jars.

I have got to get one of those bleeders for my off grid supplies. Good info. We got those outrageous oats because the do not need to be repackaged. 12 in a 5 gallon bucket with 12 one quart packages of nonfat dry milk and a bulk bag of stevia. That's three months of breakfast in the emergency pantry. We did a coffee bucket same way. 12 vacuum sealed bricks of coffee and a bulk bag of stevia. It's a three month supply. One prepper channel suggested making your own survival bucket. Since we have food allergies we thought that a good idea and put boxes of Mac n cheese, dried soup mixes, canned diced ham, tuna, Vienna sausages, canned pork n beans and can chicken, spaghetti and sauce in a 5 gallon bucket. One bucket is one week of lunch/dinner. Its cheaper than the survival buckets and suits our needs. Just a note on packing things in mylar. It extends food freshness for 5-10 years but the situation now is immediate IMO. If you are just getting started back up what you use now so you have enough to use within the next 12 months. Replace as you use and use oldest first.

You bring up a very sensible point. It's also good to remember that if food production is halted, or supply chain is disrupted, or shipping becomes impossible for any reason, what you have may be all you can get. One year food supply may not be enough, especially if you are the kind of person who can't turn away a hungry child or starving neighbor. I used to pick up a 25 lb. bag of beans or rice at Super1 for $20 every month for 'them'. Prices have gone up so much the past few years but it's still one of the cheapest ways to get shelf stable calories. One pound of beans or grain is generally in the neighborhood of 1,600 calories per day, which is just barely enough to survive on. Lately the least expensive place for bulk beans and rice seems to be Winco which is still in the $18 to $30 range for 25 lb. bags.

I seal the bags with an Iron and leave a small opening in the corner then I add the oxygen absorber. Then I draw out the air with a small 3/8 tube connected to a shop vacuum. I have a 12" sealer so first I seal a wide part of the corner because you can't remove the wrinkles under vacuum it does seal so I remove the vacuum hose and seal the small hole in the corner. The bags will shrink more and by the third the bags are hard as rock.

So true about the 1 year store bought foods before the "survival buckets" that will most likely never be used as intended. I have canned meats dated out to 2027ish. The grains take time to process (freeze) and some peeps have to break it down to fit in small freezer spaces ( to kill critters before sealing) but it can/should be done. Canned goods (in water only) are good for out here in the dry humid less west. And lastly I agree going a lil more on the OA's because I hate the worry from a loose bag .... absolutely no pun intended. Perfect timing tonight. I'm shopping the "zon" for mylar sealers tonight. Open the flour fully, place the mylar bag over it to come a third of the way down, now flip it over and carefully ease flour into the mylar bag.... A five gallon bag is overkill for 2 so gallon bags. I use Tidy Cat tubs. Stackable and buckets with lids are 5 dollars at least so one less expense. Keep stacking my litter tubs til unavailable. Pretty air tight as I couldn't smell used litter when I used them to clean litter boxes with them. I've been putting the bag of beans with a hole so I know any directions or ideas in the mylar. Less likely to get beans everywhere. Yeah not everything completely everything slurps up every bit of air to a brick. Macaroni seems to really vacuum seal then pastas. Really the only thing to get freeze dried would be meat. One here and there would add up. Freeze drier wouldn't be that cost effective with meat prices now unless you can afford it all at once.

I am a new prepper and haven't started using mylar bags and OAs yet for the exact reason you stated! I'm using my Foodsaver accessory with canning jars and the Foodsaver bags that then go into a 5 gallon bucket. We are not ready for true long term storage past a year or so. We don't have the space to do so anyway. Eventually we hope to figure out a way for true long term storage with Mylar bags and OAs. Thank you for clarifying!!

If done with this method how long will oats last? I’m a new prepper, almost have 6 months stocked up but just got my vacation money in so 700$ dollar extra will be used for food
@kathym2501

@@Mariemarie-uw7id When packaged this way and kept in a cool dry place away from rodents and bugs your oats can last indefinitely. As long as the oats don't have anything added to it like flavorings. Sounds like you are doing a wonderful job.

Good video, 🌞 sunshine! I have never used mylar bags yet. My preferred method is vacuum sealing jars or packages. I then stick the packages into totes.

Do it once - do it right. You don’t want to get 2k lbs into your preps and realize everything is aging much quicker than you’d intended. If we treated every day like the last day and panic buy without proper storage, I wouldn’t bother getting out of bed, much less go to work. Mylar & oxygen absorb what needs it (do your due diligence) and put away the rest.

You can use empty pizza sauce jars, plastic pop bottles ect for beans and rice, put a ox absorber and tighten lid. Save the cost on mylar bags and glass container is mouse proof.

I see you went to BJ's, my favorite store 😊 I bought that rice several weeks ago, and now they don't have it. I'm getting their Basmati in the burlap bag now. I do vacuum seal many things, and did order their 5 gallon bags. I'll be cutting them in half and putting my entire 12lb bags of flour in in, and sealing. I have over 600lbs of flour to do lol.

True. If new - wait. Work on your stockpile. I’ve been prepping for several years now. I just got my first Mylar bags and oxygen absorbers. Amazon special. 3 different sizes. Also buy in dry goods in bulk at Costco. Like rice, quinoa, dry potatoes, and dry beans.

I’ve been learning recently that it’s super important to put flour and sugars and anything else in a paper or plastic bags into a secure container. We recently found a cock roach in our house and then got infested with mice. I had to throw so much away. Even though they didn’t destroy the whole bag I didn’t trust any of it because of one hole in the plastic and the mouse poop in the bin the flour bags were in. I’m just glad it happened before it was life or death.

Thank you for your video... I have been putting my rice, and legumes into regular heavy quality vacuum bags and then storing them inside a container that keeps them away from light. I always put those kind of foods into the freezer for three days and then out of the freezer for three days BEFORE I seal them up so that no eggs or parasites can be live in there. Most of my food is home-canned and I have nearly a year's supply now. I Pressure-canned mostly meats as I feel they are going up in price very fast as well as may be scarce in future. Also meats are the most nutritious foods on the planet and we may need to eat less in future.

I partially disagree. If you're building up a years worth of food storage or storing any large quantities of food, it'll attract critters. I prefer to store everything possible in some type sealed container if not being eaten in the short term. Keeps infested food contained, and other food from being infested. Plus, the one year food supply becomes long term storage eventually. Best to start out right.

I interpreted her sage wisdom differently. We that are JUST building our stock may be at 3 months to 6 months...and those items will be used WAY BEFORE the 10 year mark. Once you get your one year stock, and begin to further your long term pantry, THEN use the mylar. She is still saying properly seal, package and protect. Just don't waste the money on Mylar packaging for extended long term when obviously you are going to use it within the year or 2. Which this advice came at such a perfect time for me. I have 20 pounds of dry pinto, 40 rice, 20 oat, instant mashed, gluten free flour (which is not going to last 10 years) and was paranoid to use my food saver plastic bags that came with my new food saver as all preppers say use mylar. Being FROZEN to prep is never a good place to be. And yet I have been for not having mylar. After watching this content, same day, I am proceeding to food saver bagging these items, that clearly I will use before the 10 year mark. All will still be bucketed but just in food saver instead of Mylar. ~ Would rather have 17 dollars in edible, than in a bag I am going to open in 14 months. So I am grateful for the nudge. : )

No where in my thinking does 20-30 year shelf life exist. Seems like a lot of tribute must come from pushing this stuff. Sorry, had to vent, I’ll shut-up now.

There are other reasons to use Mylar bags for storage like "Space" unless you live in a big house with a basement for extra storage a bunch of can, jars, boxes and 5 gallon buckets are not feasible for trying to get your supplies beyond a few weeks or months.

I see so many channels constantly suggesting some of the long term freeze dried storage foods (25 years). I’m sure they are going to help in many cases but they are so very expensive and of the brands that I have taste tested NOT A SINGLE ONE WAS DELICIOUS to eat. Most were actually inedible to me. So after I collected a good bit of that sort of food; I finally decided from now on to purchase ONLY what I enjoy eating. So now I shop for can foods that should last a few years and dried foods that I can store easily (beans/rice/pasta) in ways that can last a decade or longer.

You're so right! I was storing a bunch of that stuff and then when I went to finally do a taste test, I realized it's not really that good! The pictures on the packaging look really pretty, but the food is bland and it had a strange texture. I do enjoy the mountain house meals though.
@DMAneoth
@DMAneoth 2 года назад
@@sunshinestatesurvival Yes; mountain house does seem to be the best of them to me as well. I still occasionally pick up a package or two when I see it, to store them away. But I’m done buying any of it in large quantities. Auguson Farms foods seems good too. And I do have some of their items. Freeze dried items like eggs, butter, and veggie soup mix. With those few basics I can cook many meals…

Forgive me if im not understanding but why waste a gallon size for 2lb of beans? You could cut off the excess and seal the bottom of that extra piece mak8ng a whole second bag to use. For the o2 absorbers you could throw them in a small snack size baggie fast and they wont have much o2 in there leaving more for your next sealing bag.
