Backstory: When Steinberg released Retrologue 2, not enough people got quite as excited as I did.
I felt as if I was the only person on the planet to appreciate the full power of Retrologue 2, so I set out on a space mission - these are the sounds I returned to Earth with.
In truth: I think the new Retrologue 2 is an incredibly underrated synth, so I produced this as proof.
All programmed in the new Cubase Pro 8.5 - I call this project, "Captain's Log".

Owen

Thank you, +Kieran J - Getting the sounds to feel great - warm and musical, if you will - was easily one of the biggest challenges when making these sounds, so I'm very pleased you noticed. A lot of that was made possible due to the new Resonator module, although judging by its presets I don't think I used it the way it was intended. Either way, Steinberg did an incredible job with R2. She's been keeping me warm since December. :)

hi nice work on these presets, I'm new to Cubase and got a small question. how did you get your layers to display the midi notes when zooming in? is that a Cubase 8.5 only feature or could I also get that on just Cubase 8
@OwenTheGeek
@OwenTheGeek 8 лет назад
+MuffMuncher3000 That's not a new feature, it's called the "In-Place Editor". In the first few seconds of the video you'll notice that every track has an activated icon (it's blue, below the record enable switch) - that's the button you need.

Er, wow. Symphonic almost. I just obtained this VST and Cubase Pro as well (it's 9.5 oh back-in-time version of Owen Palmer, you'll love it). Got to download the whole lot after I expand my PC with an SSD. SSD - Otherwise known as a bar of gold bullion. So, the music software cost me a couple of hundred, the disk space and speed twice that ah well! I am going back to listen to this again, it's pretty nice, thanks again, I will try and get somewhere close in a day or two, kit willing.

Great Show! Could you tell what is the maximum of simultaneous used instances of retrologue in this project?
@OwenTheGeek
@OwenTheGeek 7 лет назад
There are 60 individual instances in the project. If you're asking me how many instances play parts at any one time, I'm not sure, it never crossed my mind. Retrologue 2 is a very well-optimised synth. I never stopped to consider how many instances I could play music with simultaneously. You can see the green ASIO meter in the top-left-hand corner of Cubase in this video which shows that this project never really put any stress on the system (which is 7 years old!).

Great to see more videos of Retrologue 2! This video and the one by Salvador are the best videos to demonstrate what this improved synth is good for, with all the new features added. I have always liked this synth, and it got even better. Will you make more videos about this synth? I wish that someday I learn how to make "good" music. And by good music I mean music that I like, not what others like just for money and fame because that's wrong. I have a question I hope you can help me with. You see, what I really want to make "someday", is ambient, downtempo, trance, maybe some dub-techno, deep house etc. Whenever I try to make a nice uplifting trance/hard trance sound with synths like Sylenth1, A.N.A., Hive and other synths that is good for trance music, I always get the same sound. I want to become better at sound design and make lots of different sounds. So if we follow the common route with the saw wave, 8 voices and detune, like what do you do from there to shape the sound further? I know the things you can do with the cutoff and a mod envelope, but the sound will still have the same tone if you know what I mean. So if I play for example an E on the keyboard, it still is an E, but I want it to sound different. And doing things with the pitch won't help because that's the same as playing, let's say an F, but then it has the sound of for example an A, C or G an octave higher/lower depending on how much you increase/decrease the pitch. The basics of sound design is easy to understand, but how you shape the sound the way you want is so hard to understand.

+Øyvind S. Karlsen Thanks for your comments! I haven't decided yet whether or not I'll do more videos on Retrologue 2, but I've just made the preset collection in the video available for purchase (see the description); it comes with a PDF containing further info and production tips. To answer your specific question, though, there are endless things you could do. I really don't like the plain old 8-voice unison sawtooth that much, it's much more fun to experiment and come up with new sounds. So: 1) Think about the number of voices used in multi mode (E.g. sometimes 5 sounds better than 8) 2) Pay close attention to how the Spread dial affects the timbre 3) Try various oscillator phase settings 4) Combine multiple oscillators (E.g. 1 heavily detuned unison oscillator mixed with 1 lightly detuned oscillator) 5) Don't always use saw waves (pulse waves can give a similar effect, and again these can be 'blended in' on an additional oscillator) 6) Find ways to affect the tonality of the oscillator, such as LFO pitch modulation in the matrix Thanks again, Øyvind!

A question? If i buy these do i own the rights to all the presets in my tracks? if i wish to release my tracks, do own the rights to use the presets?? royalty free ? thank you
@OwenTheGeek
@OwenTheGeek 8 лет назад
Hi +Intello - the legal info is in the documentation (goo.gl/evAoSd). Basically, as long as you're the original purchaser, you're licensed to use the sounds in your tracks. Technically, "royalty free" is the wrong terminology since you're paying for the license, but yes, you can certainly use them within tracks you release without any trouble. :)
@intell0
@intell0 8 лет назад
+Owen Palmer Thank you for that sweet ass support. Just bought them :) going to try them out . Seems that retrolouge is one hell of a synth one knob turn and u have supersaw :D
@OwenTheGeek
@OwenTheGeek 8 лет назад
+Intello Thanks! :) It doesn't sound like the classic supersaw, but since the unison is per-oscillator, and there are 3 oscillators, and you can set unison spread as a modulation destination, it can go a lot further than the classic supersaw. Also, Retrologue 2's default saw wave has a natural high frequency roll off, so it doesn't get too sharp and brittle. Gosh, I love my Retrologue 2. Thank you Steinberg!

Just from Hearing this presentation. its kind of making me think that this synth might be a better sylenth1. whats your opinion on that?
@OwenTheGeek
@OwenTheGeek 7 лет назад
I'm not sure how to answer that question. I have both, one cannot replace the other. I'm more likely to use R2, but their strengths/weaknesses are quite different. If I had to lose one forever, I'd lose Sylenth1 and keep Retrologue 2, but that probably says more about my personal values in a synth than it says about any objective superiority. I can certainly get a fatter sound out of Retrologue 2, but there's not a lot in it. I suppose R2 is better value for money. Although there's some overlap, their synth engines are quite different, which is why I'd struggle to crown one 'the best' over the other.
@loradasc
@loradasc 7 лет назад
Yeah sorry that question was badly formed. Id like to hear your opinion on overall performance of the Synth. I have only sylenth1 as a synth even though i consider getting r2. But i feel like sylenth1 is very limited. The question is whether or not r2 Would be in some kind superior to sylenth1.
@OwenTheGeek
@OwenTheGeek 7 лет назад
In that case I can say that Retrologue 2 is superior in many, many ways. The oscillators have a different sound from Sylenth1 - I prefer R2's in most cases. Aside from the sound of the oscillators, R2 has the advantages of crossmod, ringmod, hard sync and XOR. You have a huge range of filter types in R2, including some really interesting ones. Plus R2 comes with a dedicated noise generator that's capable of a handful of different tones. The modulation system in R2 beats the hell out of modulation in S1 - in particular the third envelope and Performance page on R2 are pretty damn special. Plus R2's LFOs are more flexible, and there are more of them. I don't normally like to use internal FX on a synth, but R2's are exceptional, especially since they can be so easily incorporated into the modulation system. I mean.. I could probably go on and on and on. Retrologue 2 is a seriously powerful and underrated synth. I hope my video demonstrates that. I could do a similar video for Sylenth, I suppose, but it would certainly have a different sound/tone and it would be good for different reasons. They're both great synths, but I think you can tell which I prefer.

Absolute brilliant! Your pads are outstanding. Same elite class then this: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-W2TYFddJ_MM.html It seems Retrologue has it own unique analog sounding character, fitting the mix perfectly and has more mod-options then for example Diva and it's ADSR. It's also out of the box polyphony- not like Monarch. I will buy your sound pack immediately. Can I have the Cubase project file too? It would help to see it in action, in depth, how to handle the sounds for best performances!
@OwenTheGeek
@OwenTheGeek 8 лет назад
Thanks, +Hans Meiser - I agree, Retrologue 2 is a completely different beast from either DIVA or Monark - although each of them is a great synth in its own right. I've included more in-depth thoughts on what I love about Retrologue 2 in the documentation which you can read here: goo.gl/evAoSd The documentation also includes production advice and a patch guide, so that should be your starting point when you make your purchase. I haven't decided what I'll do with the Captain's Log Cubase project yet, but I do hope to offer it to owners of the bank at some point in the future.
