We keep fighting with voles over our garden. It's a never-ending fight, so we're trying to get some help from nature. We're installing birdhouses for local birds of prey to attract them to our garden. Hopefully we're doing it right, and they will come join us soon. With autumn here, we have more produce to harvest. Not everything is doing as well as we would like, but that's life 😃
If you'd like to see what it's like to have long-eared owls and kestrels moved into your birdhouse, you can check out this video: • Ze života kalousů 2023

Thank you, Shelley! We really hope some of the birds of prey will show up. Here they sell the goldenberries in supermarkets but they are kinda expensive - they import them from South America, mainly from Peru. Maybe you can buy them in stores too (Internet says that they are also called Cape gooseberries, Peruvian groundcherries or Inca berries). Some people don't like them but we love them 😁

My neighbor let grape vines grow in her spruce trees. She was told they would kill the tree. She wanted the vines and now the trees are all dead. I can’t recommend mounting things on trees either. It will choke the tree where it is connected unless you adjust it every year. Love watching all your harvest!
@tommyandpeter

You are maybe too negative. The grapes on the trees are not totally out of control but we'll see. We can always use dead trees for other plants that crawl high up, so we would find use for them 😁 People who take care of forests here also mount various bird houses on trees and everything is fine, it's just a few screwes...

Your Tuberous Begonia hanging planters look Beautiful ! Good luck attracting Owls 🦉 I've never tasted a Chokeberry. they remind me of a strange Tomato that also grows in a husk.

Hi guys, we are already anxiously awaiting the arrival of the long-eared owl and the krestel bird. Think of names for them. Poor voles but what is normal for the owl is a tragedy for the vole, right? Life as it is. This confirms that what we commonly call "normal" is actually an illusion. It's good to see that you have grapes in your land, exquisite fruit, but I agree with Tommy, the seeds are an inconvenience that tests our patience. Is pumpkin pie coming for Halloween? Thank you Stefan 😁 We really like aubergines, they look good and taste good 😋 There are cats too, coming and going, sometimes they catch a vole or two, but it's not enough, because the voles keep coming from the neighbouring fields. So we need all the predators we can get 😀

6:34 Your grapes look very healthy. lots of growth. I do not know if it is the same for all varieties, but when I had a small vineyard almost all the horizontal vines would fill with grapes while most of the vertical vines(stems) would turn woody with no grapes. Also once a grape is a couple of years old it is very difficult to kill it. So every fall cut all the vines off that aren't horizontal. I had a plant get so out of control one year that I cut it all the way down to the ground leaving only a short stump. The next year it grew huge again and I had time to train in to grow horizontally. If you think of a ladder try cutting each plant to grow like a ladder.
@tommyandpeter
@tommyandpeter Год назад
They are growing very well but they didn't develop fruits. I feel like I had pruned them too much. Here it is said that you need to keep at least a few stems from last year and on them new stems will grow and only on those there will be grapes. I can't explain it in English too well, sorry 😀 Thanks for the tips 😉
@2eleven48
@2eleven48 11 месяцев назад
You need to understand about natural life - which voles are part of - not your damn garden. It's just a garden; nothing more than that. I'm bewildered that you both should be thinking like this, given how much you go on and on about keeping everything true to how we react and respond to the natural world.
@tommyandpeter
@tommyandpeter 11 месяцев назад
Well, that's why we try to attract natural predators which naturally live in the area. That's the whole point of birds of prey - as we mentioned almost the whole diet (more than 90%) of European kestrels and long-eared owls consists of voles. So it's normal that they hunt them. Maybe you confuse voles with moles or you are generally confused and know nothing about voles in Central Europe? Voles are field mice and they can be a catastrophe for crops in fields and gardens due to their rapid population growth - they spread rapidly, outcompeting their natural predators and disrupting the ecosystem balance. Seems like you don't understand at all. Even in books about natural and permaculture gardening voles are the synonym for a disaster. Natural life = predators (birds of prey) hunt prey and when there are less predators we need to make good conditions for them.

The problem with your grapes not having a good yield may be caused by a grape fungus. If your owls and kestrels eat all your voles, I can send you some more. Ha Ha. Years ago there were more cats running wild and the cats kept the voles under control but now there are less cats and the voles are terrible. They eat my perennials and Asiatic lily bulbs. No fun!!! Hope your bird houses attract owls and kestrels real soon. Have a nice Autumn.
@tommyandpeter
@tommyandpeter Год назад
Some years ago there was fungus/mold on the grapes, but that was because it was very wet when they were getting ripe. But this year the fruits didn't even develop because I probably pruned it too much and didn't keep healthy branches... It was also very wet in spring, so maybe that was also a problem. So sorry to hear that you also have a vole problem. They are really terrible and annoying... We catch them in traps (we catch more than 150 voles every year) but they keep coming from the neighboring fields. So the predators are needed to keep them in normal numbers 😕

omg i must be the lucky one, i have 3 owls in 3 pine trees, one ušata sova ( same as one you try to lure in), one what we call ćuk and one still unidentified, i saw it fly but have no clue wich one it is, for other i know coz i saw them in sunset.. i guess they were there even before i bhought the property.. btw with grape when pruning, the branch must be cut like under angel, not narrow cut, no clue how to explain it. i had a lot of grapes, crazy coz i did not even tend the grapevine, it is stil filled with weed, grass, god knows what and there was bunch of grapes on its fence... nature isa wired sometimes, you nurture it and get nothing lol and someone else does nothing and it is full harvest..

@tommyandpeter 10 месяцев назад
You must be very lucky. Owls here are not that common, we haven't seen an owl from closer in nature ever. That is so cool, that they live in your garden!! The grape pruning going wrong was mostly that I cut healthy vines and kept some that were dry, so there weren't enough live ones 😀 At least the wild ones were growing fine. I worked in a 'city garden' and they used ALL the chemicals lol I always tried my parents to use this particular chemical that kills everything to the depth of 2cm - they still use it in Finnish cities so it can't be dangerous? To this day they decline. Perhaps I'm lenient what comes to chemical use. A funny thing came to my mind - climate change is deemed a positive in Finland. Already next summer we can start having grape wines and having wineries. And yes - the temperatures have risen already so much - a sudden jolt to 20C in early May and summer lasts till mid October and then a sodden jolt to +5-+10. Who nows about the weather anymore.
@tommyandpeter

@@tommyandpeter We in Finland have had quite serious serious changes - exactly as has been predicted. Our summer (meaning 20C+) used to start in early June in the south, now in april. We get massive heat wavevaves and then huge amounts of water. So far it has been good for Finnish agriculture. Our traditional forests have to 'be replaced' with the kind you have - it will be an absolutely huge task but it's already on-going. (It's funny that no-one talks how the whole of Nordics changes faster than the rest of Europe.) One big thing is to have AC in all place to be able to live - it has become absolutely necessary. While Finland has the money to benefit in the short term from all this mayhem of climate change - I think it might destabilise as soon as in 5 years. (I had to get AC for my apartment, my parents forests were cut down and replanted with southern European trees.). Send it here, please 😁 We don't know much about swales but it sounds like too much work to create them for too little effect (the terrain is flat), because when it's not raining it's not raining and maybe the soil would stay wetter for a bit longer where the water would accumulate but not by much. We prefer to naturally plant according to wetter/drier areas in the garden.

@@tommyandpeter Good, I'll inform Njord (the norse weather god) about our agreement and hope that he'll accept :) I don't know much about them either, but it does seem to be a lot of work - maybe especially for flat areas? I did forget to ask how rainfall is when it does rain, and more important how the run-off is (if all the rain soaks in your soil and stays on your land to begin with, then I guess there isn't any benefit with swales either)
@tommyandpeter
@tommyandpeter Год назад
All the rain soaks in the garden, on the flat terrain nothing flows away 😉 We also catch some rainwater into barrels from the gutters on the house. It's just the precipitation is very random and we never know how the year is going to be. Saying that as a meteorologist 😁
