Always breed for a genetically diverse population so you can contribute to a diverse population that will last for years. It’s as easy as not breeding sibling pairs or selling pairs from the same spawn. It’s best to buy from different sources periodically so you can boost genetic diversity and reduce inbreeding. If you are going to breed for designer morphs, do it responsibly so they don’t end up like domestic bettas, neon tetras, or designer clown fish, they just don’t last that long due to bad breeding practices(hereditary diseases or bad genetics). So instead of taking the nicest looking fish from the same spawn and breeding them, breed them with their parents so it’s line breeding and not straight incest. Lots of breeders fall short when it comes to breeding, they may know how to breed but they don’t go into depth about securing a stable and healthy LONGTERM population. All they know how to do is make 2 into a thousand, then make quick bucks. Even though fish are more resistant to inbreeding, that doesn’t mean you should do it. Inbreeding should be the last resort, people should swap grow out fry with each other so they can maintain a strong gene pool to disperse into the hobby, similar to that of the tarantula hobby(they always swap slings and don’t breed siblings together). Newly introduced species are hardy from the start but when under qualified breeders breed them, they slowly loose the health and vigor over time. Eventually they are overbred like neon tetras then everyone else moves on to the next fish to ruin. Instead of moving on, people should put in effort to restore what was once a hardy and healthy fish through genetic rescue. You take imports, quarantine them, then add them to your weak breeding stock to reinvigorate them. Another way to make improve this genetic rescue is to up the standards of breeding fish, if the hobby can be on par with the tarantula hobby, the captive population will become more sustainable and stable long term. *This is intended for all breeders or potential fish hobbyists looking to breed fish, we all have our part to play if we are going to enjoy this hobby for many years*
Im building bristlenose colonies from a range of places and breeders Commons, albinos, calicos, super reds, peppermint, orange spot and long fin varieties. A few L numbers L201 L397 Will be getting by end of next year L333 L134 L002 L168 L129 L046 2 from each different place grow them out in separate tanks and then build the colonies when i can sex them
I like it when it's just raw footage rather than highly edited . Thanks for educating all of us about breeding of different fish and Care requirements for them
Don’t worry about what others think unless it’s positive, my opinion is that you should make what ever vids you enjoy making, keep up the great work on your vids 😀
I had great success with breeding the hillstream loaches and I wasn't even trying to breed them. They were just a cool fish I decided to buy as a group at my LFS. Here is somethings I did or how my tank was set up that caused all the breeding to happen. I had tons of rock all different sizes and shapes, how I had them in my tank was they were stacked in a pile with little crevices they can hid into. I also had terracotta plants saucers flipped upside down in various spots on top of the rocks. It served as hiding spots for the hillstream loaches. Also over time algae grew on the flat surface of the saucers. I also didn't have high flow water and my water temps were at 81, for substrate I used more of a pebble type. I was also using regular city tap water with dechlorinator chemicals. My ph was in a range of 7 to 7.8 sometimes 8. Hopefully this helps you with producing some more hillstream loaches. Good luck!!!!
They’re good fish, my dad didn’t like them when I grabbed some up when setting up his tank but they’ve grown on him. Cute little bastards they are need 6-8 really to keep them happy I found. PS: My profile is a hill stream we have.
I started out with 6 HSL's and 2 yrs later my 75 gallon heavily planted tank is littered with them. Babies keep arriving. Really fun to watch them chase each other around the tank.
Hey Nick..I just literally discovered 1 Sewellia Lineolata newborn fry in my river rock tank yesterday..I lifted a flat rock to moe and saw something wriggle. About 2 mm if that and like a slither of glass. I managed to turkey baster it out and have popped it into a holder with airhose. This tank has only been set up for roughly 5 weeks so I’m truely amazed that I’ve found fry so soon. I have owned the 2 males for over a year but bought them 4 girlfriends just a few months ago (one sadly passed via an injury) so I’ve 3f/2 m now. I’m so excited. You defo got quite a few males in your bad, all the ones at front showing under neath of body were male but maybe a couple at back of the bag may be female. Good luck with breeding. I actually hear they aren’t that easy as there’s not many people with them for a start and hardly any breeders. Who knows. I’m in Perth so very hard to find at times and dam expensive. All the more reason I hope I have loads of bubs.😜🙏🏻😊
I really liked this one! The alternative video style gives me a better sense of the scale of your operation and was interesting because your fish room was shown from different angles. Great work and thanks for sharing all of your awesome projects!
Man... What ever you do, I truly enjoy watching. You are so genuine and humble, I really like all your videos. Just keep it up, let perfection come as you evolve. And perfection does not nessesary mean good.. 😉👍
Any chance you could make a video on how u culture infusoria (yes ik there are tones of videos online) would be great to see how you do it keep up the amazing work ✌️
For the galaxy rasboras, if that doesn't work, try a few layers of marbles on the bottom of the whole tank. I haven't tried myself, but I've heard good things
Love these honest casual vlogs. These videos are great. keep it up buddy. It's impressive what you've done so carry on. Also pick out the larger snails to increase chance of egg survival
Very nice! I haven't seen these for sale in years there used to be a guy on qldaf that had them. I even had some Albino ones at one stage. Hope you have great success
Very interested to see how your hillstream loach breeding project goes. I love the way the loaches flutter around, chase each other at times, then just stick to the glass. Very quirky fish but cool.
I am just getting back into the hobby after many years and looking for videos all I tend to see are overseas ones. It is refreshing to see some Aussie content and information that is relative to our area. Keep up the good work and I look forward to more videos.
Will is watch the vid tomorrow, but you are doing an amazing job and always produce the BEST videos! Keep up the amazing work and hope you get some Hillstream Loach breeding action! 👌
You can keep a dish of rocks in dirty waste water in a sunny window to grow algae for the hillstream loaches I have heard. Not sure if having abundant food for fry would help like that, but it wouldn’t hurt- except it would feed the snails too.. maybe it would be easier to pick them out or add a snail killer in there. A different loach, assassin snail, or a puffer for a while?
2 yrs later, now again in your online store and since i saw then the other month quite interested, think my tanks about the same size you have them in this VID. time to do another Hill stream loach vid / update
I would absolutely love to buy some hillstream babies off of you as I've been searching for them forever! I will have to keep an eye on the website in the future for when they're ready. Hopefully they love their new tank :)
Really enjoyed the vlog style. Curious as to the differences between Borneo Suckers and Hillstream Loaches. I've read that Borneo Suckers are a type of Hillstream Loach but not every Boneo Sucker is a Hillstream Loach.
Borneo suckers are part of the hill stream family, they come from a specific river in borneo, malaysia. They stay smaller than most hill stream species, staying under 3 inches.
Random question. Have you tried glasses for colourblindness? If that’s even a word lol If they worked for you it would be awesome to see you have a propper look through your fish room for the first time in full colour! You have some beautys!!
The cpd are a great fish, bit drab from a distance but close up they're awsome. I only have one female and a few males cause they are so hard to find but she's managed to give me at least 60 fry so far. Almost big enough to go into the display tank.
Hi iv been watching a few of your videos and I really like them your doing a grate job I’m over in the uk and I have a fish room only 14 tanks but I’m breeding lots of different colours of cherry shrimp and plecos and I’m trying to breed corys over the last year iv been buying a lot of fish / stock to grow out so hope will be breeding soon also got some beautiful black dark knight rams and they are so dark it took me 2 years to find them I’m finding your videos helpful keep up the grate work
😁great vid. Almost my bday and I’ll be ordering a pair of rams from you. Hopefully as wells as a micro worm culture and that amazing book about breeding fish. Really excited. Yay
Hi just wondering 2 things when do u think ur peppermint catfish will be back in stock and can you do a video if possible about how to breed your bristle nose because I would be very interested Thanks for posting vids your vids make me so happy even if I have a bad day you make my day
JEEEEEZZZZ! Wash your face before the video shoot. My guess is thst you just did a barbecue, had your hands dirty with charcoal and wiped your upper lip.Other than the fact that nothing you do in your fish room is easy, the contents are spot on! Love it, subbed and liked each and every one of you vids thst I've seen so far.
I had 9 Celestials in a heavily planted 20 long. Temp 79F; non stop breeding. There are about 20-30 babies of various sizes now after 4 weeks. I also float a lot of plants and the babies eat the springtails.....Lowered temp to 77.5F and they stopped the luvfest. They are in with Columbian Zebra and Queen Arabesque Pleco's and bunch of Green Shrimp. I tried Hilstream Loaches and failed by purchasing sick fish.
Is that a cigarette in your hand at 11:44?I Wouldn’t have guessed man. No biggie I smoked for years and just quit 2-22-23. Anyway, awesome stuff man. I get my information from you first. It’s cause of you I have breed my crown tail bettas, bristlenose plecos, soon hill stream loaches, blue eye fork tail rainbows, panda Cory’s, and pea puffers. Good stuff man!!
Hey, I recently watched your video on how to breed neon tetras, and I was wandering, did you have to do a drip acclimation to drop them in? Since the ph, gh and kh are extremely different for my tanks. I put two in yesterday night but I haven't seen any breeding today. When do I need to wake up and turn on the lights, do I need to feed them while their in there, and also I love your videos man. Also how much did you buy those hillstream loaches, are you going to be selling them on your website? Another thing with the neon tetras, I tried making infusoria but it doesn't work, I have made 3 attempts and there are no infusoria, I used the water from my 1 year old aquarium, not sure whats happening, is there anything else I can feed them, I read somewhere that you can feed egg yolk or hikari frozen rotifers for the first few days.
Don't mind what that one person want your video to become, there's a lot of people loving your video ever since you started a small fish setup up until now where you produce a massive types of fishes. Just still keep moving
I appreciate your more quality / time consuming videos but honestly the vlogs are also great. I think one of these a week if you can find the time is a good balance
