I like that Renault are recycling their scrap and avoiding rare earths. They are probably not the only company doing so, but it is good that they publicise it, as it helps with their public image.

Sam I believe you are getting confused. A 60Kwh NMC battery will have identical capacity and thus range to a 60Kwh LFP battery, but should be smaller in size due to better energy density. The LFP could actually give a higher range due to less need for a buffer to protect battery life
@Jeddin

You are correct. 60 kWh is 60 kWh. It could be 60 kWh of AA batteries. It would still be 60 kWh.
@thorsev6960

But cars with LFP also get an efficiency penalty due to being a bit heavier.

Packaging is actually very impressive. The boot space is measured to the parcel shelf (VDA standard) so it’s much larger than in the Model 3 which measures to the roof. It’s actually comparable to the boot space in the much larger Model Y (ca 550 litres using VDA).

If the Scenic is anything like the Zoe, then the Renault claimed range will be pessimistic. A ZE50 has a claimed range of about 245 miles, but I see closer to 275 miles for most of the year.

As a Tesla S and 3 owner I consider this to be the first real Tesla beater. Over 300 miles real world range. I do consider it a Y competitor. It’s half the price of a Y LR to lease. Great tech in it and lovely inside.

Scenic used to be a proper MPV for the family - I had an early one 20 years ago and in it’s time it was a great car and had more space and versatility than similar sized cars. This version whilst it looks nice, it’s just another mis-sized crossover with nothing to differentiate it from others. Shame really, it could have been a class leader if they’d actually made an EV version of the ICE Scenic.
@toyotaprius79

Actually 0-60 is in 7,9sec. But carwow measured Megane 0-60 in 6,94sec while official it was 7,5 sec, so lets see real tests. The price with bigger battery starts at 44k€. If you take highest trim with all options its 52k€. I like it very much!

I had a Scenic as a company car about 20 years ago. It was a 105bhp diesel. The gearbox died after a couple years of normal use. Apparently that same gearbox was also used in diesel Scenics with lower bhp. It couldn’t handle the torque of the 105bhp so it died. It was fixed but it was never the same after that. Especially reverse. I asked the dealership who would have picked up the bill if I had bought that car privately. He told me that would be me as it was out of warranty. Worst part: apparently the gearbox issue was a known issue with Renault. The next-gen Scenic got a new 6 box. I’ll probably never drive a Renault again although I like this car and the Megane E-Tech in the looks department. Only problem is: if you spec the Megane E-Tech with some options the price falls into Model 3 territory. Which means that you might as well buy a Model 3 because it’s just more efficient.
@brummiesalteno-81

That's also my main issue with the scenic name. I'll never forget the time my dad's diesel scenic ended up with full throttle on the motorway and didn't stop when at the side of the road with ignition off. Took 6 attempts to stall the car by which time we had police and fire services with us. Also didn't drive well, felt like a whale around corners. Put me right off. Having said that my brother had a little clio which was fabulous. So not put off renault completely.

Plenty of non Tesla charging options under continuous improvement in UK and EU, so Tesla eco-system not such an issue here. For the guy keeping his peteol car. @@S_CurvesThat may be true Martin (I drive a non-Tesla EV), but it’s still very patchy and unreliable. Currently my next EV will be a Tesla, as my experience of any journeys longer than 90% of my range (anything over 150 miles) hasn’t been great. It is improving but very slowly for large parts of the UK. We need Tesla to open up all their chargers now and massively improve the rollout of reliable non-Tesla public chargers.

ONE Battery from Michigan makes LFP battery packs that get 350 miles on 90Kwh battery packs and their Gemini battery product gets way more than that for same size. There are things you can do with battery chemistry (mix type of cells) and battery pack architecture to get more our of similar batteries/
@TheCostofAutism
@TheCostofAutism Год назад
Reality is that you can't really get range numbers from JUST the battery. Most manufacturers have their own versions of cooling systems integrated into the Battery pack. A Tesla Octovalve based system is going to be MUCH more energy efficient than practically anything else. Additionally, the Motors make a HUGE difference with Tesla again having just about THE most efficient motors in the industry. Finally, depending on how many MCU's are in the car (Master Control Units), power management is going to be dramatically impacted. Tesla again leads here, consistently bundling MCU's together to reduce the number of Circuit boards in the car. A perfect example of this is how the Model Y is getting BETTER range using the a smaller battery pack than the BYD Atto 3, even though BYD actually manufactures the both batteries! To top it off, the Atto 3 is a smaller, lighter car.
@allanchapman6250

When you give the range for this car I hope it’s for only 60% of the battery as that is the safe charging capacity of that type of battery to preserve it’s life.

👍🏼Sam is making a good point in this review. Once a car has sufficient range, power, torque and speed perhaps other more subjective aspects start to figure in buying decisions. e.g. the looks, the cabin layout. Lots of great ev choices are coming out now! Steep part of S-curve.❤

It’s nonsensical to compare WLTP with EPA, why not just compare the WLTP to WLTP? And the Renault is not a sedan so it’s also nonsensical to compare it to a Tesla Model 3…

@thorsev6960
@thorsev6960 Год назад
@@KP-xi4bjthat depends on where you life, WLTP can give more accurate estimates for people living in countries with low max speeds. But that’s besides the point. The best way to compare range is to use the same standard. Renault doesn’t have an EPA estimate so the logical comparison is to use WLTP which exists for both cars. Other problem with EPA is that Tesla uses the 5 cycle test (yields higher estimates) while OEMs use 2 cycle test so using EPA as a comparison tool between Tesla and OEMs is not optimal.

In fact, if I was shopping today I'd get the model 3 highlander long range instead of my Model Y. Still, it looks like a good car for my wife. She doesn't want anything fast, so the cheapest model would have enough range and speed for her and the Y is too big for her.

Viking, Megane is like the outback train, the Ghan, and Ariya is like the opera. Small details, but its very distracting. As for energy density, 60 kWh usable is the capacity, energy density will just impact on what the battery weighs and how much space it takes up, not the energy it holds. As for why the Renault is less efficient, keep in mind that at 50km/h up to 90% of the energy used is to push air out the way. Given all the research that you clearly enjoy doing maybe let yourself do a little light digging around the topic. Not suggesting you become engineering explained, but it makes for more informed comments. Personally my interest is sustainability so efficiency while retaining sufficient utility is my main interest. Yes, we need to convince people to buy EVs so they need to be compelling, and I am a sucker for a nice car, but personally I think the Citroen Oli is closer to the sweet spot for the average person, 1000kg, 40kWh, 400km range, although a little more aero wouldn't hurt as that range is most likely in traffic. Great channel, I'm just being picky 😊

My guess is the smaller battery version will cost about the same as a Model Y RWD if you spec it slightly above entry level, as you would. At that point Tesla would beat it on range, charging speed, most probably towing capacity, and performance. I really think Scenic will have some nice things going for it too and will be a compelling car, but all logic points to Model Y unless they magically make Scenic much more affordable.

Tesla model 3 is much longer car and therefore it should have a bigger booth. 500+ L booth in a sub 4,5M car is a good result. And Model Y is a large car in Europe. Too big for many, especially the further south you live.
@petemiller519

The Y beats it pretty well on all parameters. I do like the driver's screen, but it is too gutless. I wouldn't buy it even if it was 20k cheaper than the Y.
@S_Curves
@S_Curves Год назад
Generally agree, but maybe not all. Tesla makes good cars but far from perfect. Model Y has a bloated look which I cant get used to. Model 3 highland has the looks but no hatchback. Teslas minimalist interiors dont suit everyone either. These are obviously very subjective issues for buyers, but once EVs have sufficient power and range, its the more subjective elements that come into play when spending this kind of money.

The boot space is 545 litres measured to the parcel shelf. So it’s not really rational to compare it to a boot space of a sedan (Model 3). If the Scenic boot would be measured to the roof (like with the Model 3) it would be close to 800 litres.
