Wanna hear a funny story - I was 15 and half ( yeah ) ; I bought a 95 Honda Civic - I was on the craziest hill in my area and the 2 bolts holding up the shifter box came undone and the shifter knob literally fell to the floor. I was stuck on that hill for a little minute lol.

Old video, timeless problem. Took my first motorcycle out today for my first on road ride, stalled once at a flat intersection but recovered quickly. I later found myself waiting to make a left with a pickup truck behind me on a hill. The man had the patience of a saint (didn’t tailgate or honk) whilst I proceeded to stall 3 times. After the third stall, I panicked and accidentally hit the horn instead of the start button. This was also my first time hearing the horn. Furthermore, it was just outside a church/school during some event, so I had quite the audience for my shenanigans. Sufficiently embarrassed, I revved more than I probably should have (900cc) and got it in gear. I took the left a little more violently than intended, but was okay from there. Wish I had just thrown the darn rear brake down. 😂

Your front brakes have more stopping power because, when stopping more weight transfers to the front tire. When on a hill at a stop, you have more weight on the rear tire, so the rear break will hold your bike better.

Correct when you are rolling backward at real steep inclined. Front break is not that much effective because all the weight is in rear wheel.

I live at the bottom of several hills, and the only way to get anywhere is by going up them and stopping at a stop sign to a busy intersection, so this really helped me understand the easiest way to do it and made me a lot less anxious to purchase a bike

Didn’t even cross my mind until today trying to take off from being parked on a hill. Wasn’t even a massive hill but my bike would NOT move no matter how much I revved.. The best way I have found is to hold the front brake while releasing the clutch to the friction zone. Once I see the front forks compress a little bit I know the weight of the bike is now supported by the engine. Slowly release the front brake and roll on baby.

I always stall the bike and get nervous
@duroxkilo
@duroxkilo 3 года назад
@@adventuresofsven2314 each bike is a little different, as you practice you will get the feel of what's what. whatever happens, always consider your safety first, as in don't let the ppl behind you rush you. depending on the power of your engine at low rpm, it may need more revs.. don't be afraid to rev it before slowly working the clutch. the clutch has many plates/lots of surface area, it's designed to slip it, you're not going to burn it. same is true for low speed maneuvers such as u-turns, etc: REV the engine even if it sounds awkward and let the clutch slip, don't fully engage it. it's much more difficult to control the power w/ the throttle alone when going slow (as in clutch fully released and only working the gas).. a high torque v-twin can take off up hill with the rpm just a little above idle but a smaller 300cc ninja or whatever DOES need higher rpm to start moving. some call it pre-load, as in the engine spins fast enough to make power and you take how much power you need by working the clutch. but the power is always there, you don't need to rev the engine for more power you just release the clutch a little more. hope this helps. ps: adjust the clutch and throttle cables/play according to the specs of your bike. there needs to be some play. that also help you control the power...

@@robideals685 It was more mental than anything and not as bad as I would have thought. It got me used to keeping my right foot on the rear brake quick, pop it in neutral, and easy peasy. Training in the UK we have four stages, CBT, Theory Test, Mod 1 and Mod 2 before you can have a full A licence to ride anything more than 125cc (*There is also a restricted licence for those under 25). - CBT - Compulsory Basic Training, is a 1 day course on how to use a bike and do a road ride on a 125cc. You then get a CBT licence and able to take on your A licence. - Theory Test - This is a multiple choice question set about the highway code and common riding/driving knowledge, signs etc... It also has a second test which is Hazard perception whereby you watch videos and have to identify when hazards build up and occur. You need a Theory test to go for a Mod 1 and Mod 2 - Mod 1 (most people will do a DAS course before this which helps you learn whats required to pass a MOD 1 and 2). Mod 1 is a test to show how you can control the bike in different ways. 1. Moving it by hand into a space, 2. Slalom through 5 cones and then 2x figure of 8 without putting your foot down. 3. Slow moving, without foot down and then stop in a coned area 4. U-Turn without putting your foot down within a enclosed space and not going out the area. 5. Control breaking at speed and stop in a cone area. 6. Speed emergency breaking, must hit 32mph when at the speed detector and come to a stop ASAP without skidding. 7. Speed run, must hit 32 mph and swerve around the cones and then stop at the coned area (or where instructed). (item 2 will be seen as two test items). - Mod 2, this is a 45 min ride out with a qualified DVLA examiner, you will have to do a 10 min ride whereby its all by signs instructed by the examiner, the rest will be all under his command i.e "turn left, turn right".. You need to complete this without any Majors (so something as simple as keeping an indicator on too long) and you can't get a set amount of minors or consecutive minors. Once completed, you will then be A Licenced to ride any sized machine depending on age. Might sound brutal but it keeps you safe and well worth it. I passed all mine first time but the most common to fail is the Mod 1 because people either put their foot down during controlled moves or do not hit the required speed limits. Ride safe all :)

Hi Dan i am beginner with little to no experience. I am very busy studying on RU-vid everything I can. I want to say thank you for this video. Best thing I did when first learning was forcing myself to keep left leg down and right leg up and on foot brake at every stop. I have alot of hill stops where I live in Catskills region of NY so this was an essential skill to learn immediately. It was barely a hurdle to get over cuz I was used to it very early amd already understood clutch and manual from my cars but there is always a little healthy fear on hill stops even when well practiced and confident especially on very steep ones.

Not a rider yet and only ever drove a 50cc Yamaha DT (probably was 100cc but plugged, I think they all were due to laws in my country) MANY years ago. This helped a lot and it makes perfect sense. Will likely do wonders when I get to the lessons in about a month (about a month of mandatory theory lessons is required here in Greece where i am currently living - 20 hours in total). First time ever driving a car with my aunt, one of the first things she did was too have me parallel park in a 20 degree downhill, on my left side, ina pocket not much bigger than the car. She just went "no biggie", explained it, and I managed it without issue. Also very good at explaining like you did right here. Before that drive, I had never driven before and I spent a minute or two just memorizing the clutch, gear box, and all other controls, then never had any issue. I truly believe it comes from all those years of gaming. Always wanting to be in control before "playing". Got 6 different truck (collective name for forklifts and other lifts?) licences too, and two drone licences. All of which I learned in only a day (full theory, 96-100% scores, and driving tests without a hitch). Have not done the car license yet, but will do it at the same time as the motorcycle one. Driven as a "privatist" in Sweden (only country I know where you can drive legally with someone you know for practice being in the car, anywhere you want to, not needing a school) for about 3 years, just never went and took the test due to the illogical reasong that "if I have to wait in line for a few months, then f it".. but it is time to accept it. So this will be the only time I have to wait until I can test out on the theory and get to driving.. really frustrating, but I think it will also be more rewarding when I finally get there. Now I have time to watch videos of experienced riders and also learn a lot more of the mistakes etc. in-depth.

The good thing about a motorcycle is it has a front brake, for the hand, in a car with clutch, say 1950 one with hideous pedals and travel, on a really steep hill, with an egg wedged under the rear tire, you have to take your foot off the brake completely, to give gas, and clutch just enough to not break the egg or send it flying by spinning the tire. With passenger, or large Jell-O mold, best to have both feet on ground, and use that hand. On a motorcycle it's good to do that thing where you just sit there and rock back and forth, familiarizing the friction zone. Very first time I dropped a motorcycle on the road, a hill, I simply rolled back and lost it. I still stall sometimes, did it just the other day.

I am a new rider and picked up the Low Rider S today. Made it home ok but holy hell it'll teach you throttle control quickly. Thought I rode really well considering it started pissing down with rain too, the only thing I didn't factor was getting it up four ramps into my apartments 4th floor parking garage. It either stalls, shoots like a rocket or rolls back so I gave up for tonight, there is a tiny sweet spot I am going to have to figure out tomorrow in how to get it up there and a slow and steady speed but I could see myself dropping it here. Like others said really didn't think about this before buying it.

No one probably cares but it is really a mindset, I read my post, went downstairs and just got it done up 4 floors without any incident. All about the friction zone and the rear break.

@@anthonyr587 Great job Anthony. I recently got a V Star 650 and haven't been on the road with it yet. It was a used bike and needed new tires which I put on Monday. I haven't been on a street bike for many years (over 40) and I was worried about taking off on a hill so I started practicing a little bit on an incline on my driveway. I stalled like 3 or 4 times my first attempt before I finally took off. Made a loop around the yard and came back to try it again. Still stalled it 2 times before I was able to get moving. Gave up on it for today but I realize I still need plenty of practice before actually getting on the road and have to stop on a hill.

There’s a major intersection on the way to my work that’s at a slight incline and I consistently get stuck at it. Really need to practice my hill starts more. Probably one a week I stall at it and hold up traffic. Only a matter of time before someone rear ends me.

So it's like driving a standard vehicle, never knew that feeling with the clutch had a name.. the "friction zone"! That's awesome, it takes some getting used to with a car/truck. Im assuming it's somewhat like that?

I live in a small town in a mountain region Basically 60% of the town's streets are hilly including my own neighbourhood In Brazil bike riding is very common and basically every 14yo can do it, but I'm almost 18 and never really rode a bike and the fact that the town is hilly really doesn't help I'm ashamed ngl

great vid i pass my test 5 weeks a go what i can tell you is they 100% made me do a hill start on my test but in the uk you have to do a cbt theory mod1 mod2 so by that point you should be ok for hill starts i do still stuggle a little with very step hills and i do what you are doing also pratise helps :)

There's an intersection near my house with a light on a steep hill. I hate it when the cars pull right up on my tail. There's no room to roll backwards at all. I have to have this technique down pat or there will be road rage issues.
@SlutGdanteChosenOneSwinger14
I rather use the front brake, and ease on the front brake while realesing the clutch, when it starts moving then give it throttle.

Dan I'm doing my test next week and hill start is a tricky one like figure 8 and u turns and yes if you have a motorcycle it's easy to practice hard when drive car for 30 years lol 😅

one thing I really struggle with is parking on a hill, both up and downhill. I've very nearly dropped my bike a number of times when trying to do this, especially when there's a camber. What's the best way?
@SlutGdanteChosenOneSwinger14
The best way is on a slant, the kick stand toward the bottom this is up hill, down hill would be the back of the Motorcycle facing down hill. And the Kick stand facing the down hill slant again., the kick stand can hold hundreds of pounds. So it can hold the Motorcycle and then hundreds pounds more.
@AbdurrahmanZedSaeed
@AbdurrahmanZedSaeed 2 года назад
The easiest would be going downhill and going uphill while on twisties(like it is basically normal riding, because of the twist, it so effortless to going uphill), the hardest would be going downhill on very sharp twisties and going uphill after you bought your manual motorcycle

I took a video in my car, watched it over and over , then practiced with bike on a hill in my yard that was even steeper. It was on grass so it was slipping out on me too. When I did the garage with the cycle it didn't seem as hard as what I thought it would be. Just have to be solid with the throttle and keep momentum. Always look ahead of the turn, where you are going, and not straight ahead.

Crazy the rebel 300 stalls on barely an incline. No hill just a flat surface with BARELY an incline. But I manage to throttle enough to push it out, probably the same thing here

Well, long story short, I dropped a bike today for the first time since my first week of riding... I came to a complete stop then tried to turn right and also go up a steep mountain. It's a small village so the only thing that got hurt is my pride, as there's really no hiding from people I see daily. Does the CC and weight of the bike make any difference in the technique here?
