For an old (age, and years riding) motorcyclist this is great video describing how to tell when your tires need replacing due to wear. You could have thrown in age of tire and weather cracking as well. However your tires did not show this due to relative short tread life. Very easy to understand. Keep up the good work mate.

Great video, i ride motorcycles since 26 years ago,changed lots of set of tyres ... and never noticed those marks ! ... right now i was figuring out when to change my tyres ! Thanks man !

Good Info on tires Brian. I usually buy 1 front and 2 rears when I buy tires. Right now I have the Dunlop Q3's and I'm looking at greeting the PR4's for my bike. Mind you I ride a sport bike and live where we have lots of twisty roads. So millage and traction are important to me since I do ride a lot.

I think you could mention tire age. Some bikes don't get used a lot and can end up with relatively unworn tires north of 5 years old. At some point the rubber starts to dry up though and it makes sense to replace them. If you have the money I'd say when worn out or 4-5 years whatever comes first, adjust a little depending on sunlight exposure.

Very helpful... Last fall I blew a rear tire at 50 mph exiting a curve. Pleased to say that all was fine coming to a stop but the wear sneaked up on me... I didn't think it looked that bad but.... I've played that chip, don't want to do it again.

You are lucky you still have shops doing mounting and balancing so economically for you in your area. Not so here in Indy. I recently bought commander II's for my Harley from a reputable internet supplier. Got a good deal. Things have changed in the last couple years since I last replaced tires. Now, local shops are either refusing to do tires you bought somewhere else, or charging so much to do it (at least $40/tire, off the bike, around here) that you should have just bought from them. So, when the time comes to put them on, I am planning on buying the tools and doing it myself.

Good info for a new rider. I have still my original tires on my rear. 16,000 in BT021. But at 12,000 I change out my fronts. I want to replaced both at the same time. And your right I hardly use my back break. And I check my tires pressure every other day.

I've now had Pilot 4s on for some weeks now and I think they feel 'harder' on the roads. Possibly this could be due to the harder compound that gives the longer lifespan of the tyres? Just a thought. Well I'm not a newbie however I didn't turn off your video! Very entertaining as usual Bryan.

By coincidence, I am removing my old Bridgestone Battlax's and replacing them with Michelin PR4s. Thanks for the video. You confirmed what I suspected. Another reason to replace your tyres by this point is that 90% of punctures occur during the last 10% of tyre wear.

Nice Video. It's been a while since you changed to mixed compound tires, so I wondered if you were getting the claimed improved mileage and any handling differences, like stopping in the wet / dry on the harder rubber center?

Got 12K out of my stock OEM Harley Dunlops, only had to change due to getting a nail in the rear tire. Probably had another 3K left on them. Funny, OEM Dunlops on the HD were more squared off and flatter. The Dunlops that I changed to (American Elite) much rounder, more usable tread and better handling through the turns. Glad I made the change to these over the OEM's.

Bryan, I really have learned quite a lot from your "how to" vids. They are just priceless for those of us who are beginning to do the simple maintenance and repair work on their bikes. This video included. I hope you do a video removing the tires from your bike when you are ready to switch tires. I have the PR4 GT rear tire on my FJR due to a nail that blew out my stock tire at 6500 miles. The tire is great. Had them on my Ninja 1k as well. Suggestion to you.....when you are at that point when you need to check and or change your brake pads on your FJR please post that video as well! Thank you again for your entertaining and very informative style and presence.

My 2011 Honda PCX scooter has been wobbling at lot lately. I think it might be the tires since they are the original stock and are at almost at 7000 miles worn. I will check later on what the indicators says. Thank you very much for this informative video!!!

Wish the tire manufacturers would add a bit more tread in the center of the tire. So if the wear bars are set at 1/32", that means with a 8/64" depth of tread on some new tires, we are wearing 3/4 of the tread and then we are illegal. Lots of new tires only have 1/4" of tread depth. That duel compound seems to be a good idea, to me. Hope it works well.

Cool I just ordered a set of the PR4'S that should be here tomorrow. Bike shop quoted $50/each for mounting if I didn't order from them. $25/each if I did order from them. The guy did tell me sport bike tires are ridiculously easy to mount. Since I've successfully changed tube type dirtbike tires I guess I'll give it a try and then just pay for balancing.

Another indication of tires being shut is; when you look at the tire's sidewall you will see a 4 digit code in a rounded rectangle, that is the date of manufacturing as in 00/00 week of the year and year; 2517 = 25th week of 2017. Reason being because manufacturers advise against using tires that are more than 5 years old since the oils dry and the rubber becomes harder and less grippy.

Well my opinion it all depends on the weight of the bike because there's more weight on the back tire versus the front tire and that is why the back tire wears out before the front tire enjoy your video it is very informative especially to a rookie Rider I don't consider myself a total newbie but I still consider myself a rookie

I've been running the Battleax t31's and I've been getting 10k miles. I'm no lightweight at close to 300 pounds, so I think that is pretty good. The stock tires are never the same as purchasing a new tire. Don't compare the tires that came on the bike with ones that were purchased.

The stock tires shown in the vid I replaced at 6,450 miles, they had tread left but felt like crap. I replaced them with PR4GT that lasted 9000. They had tread left also but I did a long freeway trip and it left a flat spot I didn't like the fel of so I put on another set of the same. I currently have 5000 on this set of PR4GT and they look about 1/2 done and still feel great.

All Ill say is the tread info is good but the lack of oversight on the overall condition of that tire like age is also important and why having dryrotted tire sidewalls or rubber thats shiney and hard is dangerous ... Whether the treads are good or not I replace my tires every 3years and I also check the date of manufacture on the label to ensure Im getting fresh rubber...

i have two bikes... GSXR and YBR125... very different bikes. GSXR has road pilot iii. Very competent bike! The YBR however, the other day I lost traction on the front whilst overtaking a lorry... nearly landing under it! I had bars at full lock to keep it up, yet it was still falling left towards the lorry... so I booted the ground and that recovered the bike (few!)... what i was wondering... because on these small bikes tires last for ages (in tread terms).. and ive had it on the bike since 2010!!! And believe it or not there is still more than enough treat..... but do you think maybe some other aspect of the tire may have degraded??
@emanuelparedes9187
@emanuelparedes9187 8 лет назад
i think its the fact that the rubber compound is harder than the pilots which have relatively soft rubber. the soft rubber is far more sticky than the hard one therefore making the tire easy to lose traction especially in aggressive changes in direction or extreme lean angles

haha 85 I was born in 86 my uncle has a honda 250X and a 250R. the 250R has I think lonestar axles so it's a bit wider then stock I took it out for a rip a while back. thing halls ass but gets a little hairy in the corners I told him he's nuts rippin that thing but he's pretty good with it. I'd rather 2 wheels then 3 or 4 at least with 2 I can control it easier launching it in the air and if I make a mistake air born it's a little easier to correct the landing. cheers bud.

If my tires started looking as uneven as those, I would go to good parking lots, and practice techniques, that happen to wear down the outer tread, like pothole dodging maneuvers. And I would make a race course around the parking spots, painted lines, and obstacles, then practice proper knee down, high lean angle turning. Especially if I have a stunt or race cage & protective clothing.

A soft tire will not last as long. The harder the tire the longer it will last.

Not watched video,but just wanr2say,swapped over tyres on my Z1000SX,from well worn Metzeler’s (1000)squared off,for a pair of Dunlop’s,bike feels terrible!metzs wer road tecks ,duns wer sportsmax300.tyre pressure was bit wrong!10psi out!Hav,nt had time to alter pressure yet,but ride felt very hard(bouncy)but they are a sporty tyre. If you have this bike,get pr4,s.Or Metzeler road tech!DONT COMPREMISE!
