When they ask for your email address to unsubscribe they unsubscribe you from their request for $upport, but pass your email on to others running in the party around the country. The emails never end.
My favorite is getting a text from someone I do not know asking for me to support some cause or to vote yes or no to some state law. That is a guaranteed block from me.
Right? I donate when I want to, not when I am constantly begged to do so. I get very few calls or texts from campaigns, and the emails are sent to my spam folder. Anything sent to my PO Box gets torn up and thrown away in the Post Office trash bin.
But if you donate now your donation is matched 20x and the opposition is ruined/done for/never coming back……at least that’s what all 7,378 texts have said.
@@eastendbird4118 The UK takes it a step further. They have spending limits per contested seat, spread over the year before polling day. So if a party doesn't run a candidate in a cycle for any particular position, the party doesn't get the 54,010 . Not only does it level the playing fields across the board for every election (as each candidate has the same amount), it encourages fair participation and contesting every seat every election. If we could get rid of gerrymandering, and put these kinds of election laws in place, we would have politicians much more reflective of the population.
Truth , TRUTH, as an American living in Canada for years now …. Love the election process, the timing … no one is allowed to pay for a candidate, no ads endorsing anyone … no prescription drug adds .. it’s done in six weeks … socialized healthcare, my son went to McGill university for three thousand a year ! Canada takes care of its own , now things are shifting and there is no perfect approach to appeasing all . I can tell you this , they keep their young people out of student loan debt for life ! I love my country, USA , but it better wake up . What’s happening is a disgrace .,I had a friend go into bankruptcy because her husband battled and won cancer! Shouldn’t happen 😡Get the money out of politics, no buying politicians here .
I'm not American but I hate to see how "everyone's taking care of their own" and in the end the world cop must clean up their messes. Unfortunately maybe it's better to know who gives the money, in other countries it's under the table. You can't keep money out of politics, politicians are in charge of public spending and regulations. And as much as we hate it, we have to pay attention all the time.
As a Canadian, lobbyist are actually a big problem in Canada. Oligopolies are the only options for groceries for a lot of people because lobbyists made it that way.
It all depends on which point, which he had several and I judge the merit of each claim instead of passing judgement on the entire conversation. He joke on abortion was just that, a joke to make him feel better. I definitely agree about whiney millennials who can't handle a video format longer than 60 seconds! The bulk of American's have the attention spans of humming birds. Which is why Biden's failures are very easy to forget! And lets face facts. These elections have turned into slush funds for the wealthy! Why does it cost several million dollars to produce campaign videos? Why is it that depending on the venue space it costs $50k - $16.8million for a Superbowl spot to show these ads? As for getting to know Kamala, as an active democrat I have no confusion of who she is, what she stands for, and the failures she has created all on her own. I am an active democrat who has followed her since her early years in California. And she might actually need a 2 year transition team if she wins. But Yes! As an active democrat who goes to meetings and conventions, and who has worked on campaigns I get on average anywhere from 8-18 emails a day from either Kamala, Tim, or some celebrity begging me for money. I get roughly 1-2 texts a day despite how many numbers I have blocked. I am rather sick of the constant bombardment!
Crazy the USA. I never understood the whole election cycle there. They talk about polls and how much fund-raising they've made etc. WTF? It's common for politi8cans to do little in the last 12 months of their term so it's easier to get re-elected but US takes it to another level. 16 billion🤦♂️
Well your right and it certainly doesnt help anything but unfortunatly theres more insidious reasons nothing gets done here anymore. There are those making too much money that dont want anything to change.
Personally, I would just be happy if the democrat party allowed us to have a primary election where we get the chance to pick our candidate!!! The democrat leadership has some seriously large brass-balloons to claim that Trump is an existential threat to democracy, and then proceed to cancel our Democrat Primary, and instead install their own puppet!!!!
I would love to se our nation publicly fund campaigns and the only screen time would come on PBS and allotted perfectly balanced. But as long as money is the US GOD that will never happen.
Here in Canada, as in the UK, election cycles are about 2 months. That's all you need. You don't need an endless freak show, a 6 week freak show is a-plenty!
That reminds me that multiple analysts show if Trump had just put his inherented money into an index fund and never touch it he would be a lot richer now. His entire life's work has been less successful than if he did nothing.
@@Warstyx485 This country keep tens of millions of old people out of poverty by spending it's money on them, and in 4 years I will be one of them. It's not all a waste.

Bill is correct about our elections, and $16B is an obscene amount to spend on one election. It is simply too long of a cycle and then another 70-80 days between elections and inauguration - that period is referred to "Interregnum" - it does not have to be more than 3-5 days. In the UK, their Prime Minister moves out on the day he loses or resigns!
Grifters and greed. Unfortunately, in your country a new election campaign begins the moment the last one ends, that's why nothing ever gets done. Grifters and greed.
I think it could be done in 6 months total. Folks only need a couple months to narrow the field - so only 2-3 months for primaries, then 2-3 months for general election, then 1 month for transition.
Primary should simply be one vote per person to select a candidate, and then the federal election should be the most votes gets the win. Pretty simple and we can publicly financed politics and eliminate all contributions so that nobody has influence over aspiring politicians.
@@divinewon73 You aren't really factoring in why the reason the electoral college exists in the US. The founders understood that some states with higher populations can create situations where 'most votes' would mean permanent election of one party over another. The College was created to ensure that States with lower populations aren't simply overwhelmed by those who have more, as American political views tend to vary vastly more on a per State basis, rather than an individual one.
so refreshing to hear an American voice the questions we Brits have had for years about the US political system! But he did miss one - the Electoral College!!!!! ??????
As someone who has studied US Civics and has pondered our Electoral College (mainly due to GW Bush's election) I have evolved my opinion over time. And trust me, I am not saying Al Gore was that much better, but at least he wasn't a war hawk! He was just a guy trying to make Millionaires richer! The reason that the Electoral College exists is so states like California and Texas didn't control every single election! Realize without it, most small towns wouldn't even bother having elections! It is also useful for keeping most fraud contained to the states it is coming out of, although in our last election they didn't have much motivation to investigate those fraud claims! But realize as well, if we got rid of the Electoral College, that creates a strong argument of getting rid of the Senate as well, since even though the senate doesn't favor huge states, it also doesn't reflect the majority rule!
imagine 52 uk size states on avg and alot of people live in city sizes and alot spread out in states with country. we could just have a vote in which just the popular vote counts in which alot of the time anyone not living in a city would not be have any say in the election or what happens in their state, or a college which is just saying a state with so many people get 50 votes and on with less gets 30 votes and one less gets 20 votes so on based on population. if you really care look up the difference between a democracy and a republic. The u.s. is not a democracy as alot of people would like to say, we are a republic.
@@patrickphillips973 Totally agree. It is a shame RU-vid took my comment down for explaining the reasoning why the forefathers of the US created the electoral college.... @tomg1282 Yeah that thing about auto tariffs. It stinks Al Franken punted there. Auto tariffs have been around in my lifetime at least, since the1980s. That's why we have Nissan plants in TN, BMW in SC and Subaru in Indiana .it doesn't work for all goods but it can and has worked for autos.

In Australia our election campaigns last 6 to 8 weeks. The new Prime Minister takes over as soon as the election is decided. And if that Prime Minister isn’t doing a stellar job they can be removed by a simple vote in the party room. No impeachments, no amendments, just a vote by the sitting parliamentary members and they’re replaced.
America's politics is now an industry on its own with a lot of people making a whole lot of money. Good luck shortening or simplifying anything as long as theirs money to be made.
In Canada the ruling party calls for the election (within 5 years of being elected) or forced by losing a vote of confidence (if they are a minority government), the election campaign must be a minimum of 37 days but no longer than 51 days and the election has to fall on a Monday. In the US elections go on all the time, midterms, main election, primaries and the campaigning in between. Must be big business for them, and terrible burnout factor for the people having to listen and be bombarded with it all the time. I never understand the 2 year rule at congress, 1st year learning the job, second year campaigning to keep it, no wonder nothing ever gets done, and then it goes to the other extreme, 6 years for senators.
I've always said this country's biggest problem is that it's almost "too democratic" and "law abiding" that allows partisanship to thrive. A never ending election cycle with a political and court system that has stuffed to the gills with partisan hacks is a toxic combination.
Harris will be run by the same puppets who run Biden. I am voting to stop illegals flooding the country. Lower taxes. Stop forever wars. Voting to save the 1st and 2nd amendment. What would be better with Harris. Nobody will answer this question
Why do house representatives have to seek reelection every twi years. Too much time spent campaigning, too much time fund-raising, too dependent on donors, too little time governing. Surely 4 years would make more sense?
Or maybe federal funding of elections is the answer? "If money is free speech, the big interests are sitting in front with megaphones and the average citizens are sitting in the back." - John McCain
1 year in office, can't get re-elected, strick funding checks, thus no need to "campaign" anymore. Either you have something to offer or go get a real job. You do not HAVE to be "in the government" you know. You go in with X amounts of money, you leave with X+your salary and a reasonable margin? Good. If you are found to have more, then have a walk down to the IRS and see what's up. Simple as that. You'd see people running OUT of office fast. You couldn't even get people to run for a seat anymore ;)

In the UK people vote until 10PM on election day, the count is done overnight with the candidates present, and the old PM resigns and new PM is invited by the King to form a government with basically no breaks. We give people who haven't slept in 2 days far too much power.
we are already being told some important states like Pennsylvania won't have their votes counted for at least 4-5 days after election day... meaning we will yet again have an election with very little trust in result by whichever side loses.
I have less of a problem with the long drawn-out electoral process for President than I do the permanent campaign taking place in the House. From Jan 3 to Jan 3 two years hence, all Congressmen accomplish is campaigning and fundraising; beyond that they don't do a damned thing of substance. They spend more time cold-calling donors than they do on the House floor voting on legislation.
I've always supported shorter campaigns. They only go long so they can get more money. If you can't get your point across on X, Instagram, Facebook, RU-vid, or rallies in 2-3 months time, you don't deserve to be elected.
I don't understand the American election process at all or how much money you spend. Surely that could be spent in better ways? We have 6wks and that seems like a lifetime, I really don't know how you do it! Way too much time to get completely sick of it and turn off.
I have been advocating this for years. UK is 6 weeks I think? This would give us a chance to just live our lives for 99% of the time without politics in our face and potentially dividing us and riling us up every second. And it is a great way to get money out of politics. You can't send $ 16 billion in 6 weeks.
Agree with Bill on this one campaigns get way out of hand and go on for far too long you get sick of it all. Short campaigns have to be quick, punchy and smart because nothing is wasted.
I remember the time when you could go a single day without hearing about a political circus act. Then the 2016 election happened and look at where we are. I want to return to that time so badly. I was a much happier person then, largely ignorant of government affairs. Aside from a civics class in high school, I couldn't give a shit of what was happening outside my life.
But look where not paying attention got us! The Republicans have been working on all this since the 1980's. They want their party to be in control with a dictator and they will get that if we don't all vote against them and start p aying attention to what they are doing. Read Project 2025
I'm with Bill on the shortened election cycle. But the transition period is actually important, especially if the election cycle is shortened. It's not about travel time, it's about selecting staff, moving all the newly elected people and staff (and their families) to Washington, the government canceling and transferring security clearances and codes, people going out need to find new jobs/locations, etc. Not to mention, the holiday season is right after the election. All that and more takes a few months. It's actually kind of amazing that the government is completely transferred in under 3 months as it is. When Trump got elected in 2016 he had no people ready to go, he wasn't expected to win (not even by his own people). He had to quickly find people to fill a bunch of positions. If you think the Trump presidency was a disaster, just know if he had been inaugurated two weeks after the election, it might have been much worse. Jan 6 was a disaster, but changing the inauguration date wouldn't have altered what happened that day, just changed what day it happened.
Nice job. You wrote just about everything that I was going to. Except for pointing out that we'd have to get both houses of Congress, the president, and 38 state legislatures to agree to the new schedule, and these days we couldn't get them to officially agree that the sky is blue. Yes the original schedule was set for travel on horseback, but they were traveling to take over a federal government that was smaller than Amazon's office cleaning staff.
YES! I am so sick of 2 year elections. It forces us to live in a perpetual campaign… When do they get to do any governing? Its truly unfair to the incumbent, who actually has a job to do. And it opens the door to old, bored billionaires with too much time on their hands.

I receive about 15 texts a day from DNC and Democratic candidates to pledge to vote or donate. If I don't endorse or donate, I get angry text messages "You are not endorsing Camala, then you support Drump!"!
Also, can we please ban those dumb campaign ads? Not only are they generally negative and obnoxious, but I doubt they convince anyone. You can already tell the candidates' policies and positions from websites, debates, and campaign speeches.
Not only does the new Canadian Prim Minister take over in 2 weeks, like other Parliamentary Democracies, our Federal election season itself is only about 4-6 weeks! 😀
Same in Australia. And voting is alot easier too and gerrymander free with the Australian Electoral Commission overseeing our elections at every level.
Ive been waiting for this to be brought to attention. All elections should be quicker than before and this supports it being capable. Honestly I didn't think it would work with replacing Biden and the time crunch but it's working out rather well. The political operatives and pundits are trying to keep themselves in the spotlight for longer than usual so they obviously are against it
In 2008, Palin said, "They're (referring to Russia) our next-door neighbors, and you can actually see Russia from land here in Alaska, from an island in Alaska." Interview on ABC.
He announced his run two years ago in order to interfere with the federal and state cases pending against him Bill, and it worked like a charm, special thanks to the SCOTUS6!
Did you forget about biden? He took payouts from ukraine, china bank, the moscow mayor, admitted he committed an international extortion crime as VP at a world economic forum stage, when he was about to be investigated he ran for president too.
And that announcement was only a formality, after winning in 2016 he kept holding rallies but now for the 2020 election. He only suspended rallies for a bit after that election because he wanted to overturn it. He still has given up that delusion, so you're probably right about his reason for officially resuming his campaigning.
Fun Fact: January 20th didn’t become “Inauguration Day” until 1937. Before then, the Presidential Swearing in occurred on March 4th, including the first term of FDR in 1933. Either way, Most of that delay between what is called “Election Day” and Inauguration Day is caused by the idiosyncrasies of the Electoral College. As a brief overview, citizens will cast their ballots “for” a candidate on Election Day but it’s, in actuality, more like a legally enforceable option poll informing each State plus DC which pre approved group of Electors will do the real voting in their respective Capitals in December, which are then recounted & certified by Congress on January 6th.
I think Australia might hold the speed record for changing government. The last election was on Saturday 21 May. The new Prime Minister was sworn in on Monday 23 May.
While certainly quick, in the UK we had our election on Thursday 4th July. Polls closed at 10pm and the new PM was on his way to be formally asked by the King the next morning to form a new government.
Never thought of it from that point of view. It seems that battle ground states are the only ones that matter anyway according to the plethora of 24/7 news talking heads.
The cognitive decline in Biden was pretty bad - just not the same guy from 4 years ago. The DNC did everything to hide it and ridiculed anyone that even hinted at it - even their own (Jon Stewart). But, voters knew better and it reflected in the polling. The first debate made that painfully obvious so there was no option but to replace Biden. The only surprise is that Harris has done so well. Four years ago, Harris was more unpopular than Biden, but things have changed. I actually thought it was too late to switch Biden for Harris - and Trump was already doing victory laps (like picking Vance as running mate). But, the DNC got their shit together and unified under Harris. Harris' performance in the debate showed she could hold her own against Trump, which likely won over some moderates/independents. Of course, anything can happen between now and November.
Well, to be fair to you and all of us who had some level of concern, it wasn't like it was insane to feel that way. It hasn't ever been done at the presidential level, as far as I know, in American history (certainly not anytime in the last 100 years). There was no telling ahead of time that the sitting VP, whose favorability was as low or lower than Biden's, could rally the party together -- but it also wouldn't have looked good to pass up the first bi-racial woman in favor of anyone else. An open convention would have been messy and could have just resulted in hurt feelings and a lot of voting abstentions. And with only weeks until election day, cementing the candidate in people's minds, defining them before the Repubs did and getting rallies/campaign operations/cash flow going was going to require absolute precision to get right. Luckily it seems to have all happened under Kamala, but it was never guarenteed.
lol because that is the “democratic “ thing to do. The hypocrisy is astounding 😂 She never got one vote! The time between election day and inauguration day used to be a lot longer! Inauguration Day was originally March 4th, before being changed to January 20th in the early 1930s. Even so, it's too long now, I agree. Most other countries seem to have their new leaders take office very soon after election day. However, because of things like how the process of cabinet appointments and other things works, we need some gap between Election Day and Inauguration Day, I'm not sure how long, but yeah, 2.5 months is too long.
That's a good point, given the way things work. So many of the President's appointments have to be cleared through congressional committees. That might have been ok when they would try to work together in good faith, but now they seem to be an extended opportunity for grandstanding by members and hobbling the incoming administration. The US constitution seems purposely designed to minimize the amount of time that elected officials spend governing, while maximizing the cost of voting them into office. It must be terribly inefficient.
