There's many more like him than there are trumps and cruises. Its just that they don't make any noise, they keep their heads down and work unseen behind the curtain. And I thank God everyday for that, we need to drop this loud and proud culture that praises becoming a personality or influencer instead of praising actually getting shit done.

I agree with the sentiment completely... ...but don't you see? The whole point is he's *not* a "great man"--he's an effective public servant: he's diligent and disciplined. We've become so accustomed to celebrity politicians and useless demagogues that seeing an elected official simply doing his job amazes us. "Great Men" are often not good administrators...and they may not even be good human beings: They're just very forceful personalities with impressive achievements... But those are better qualifications for an Emperor or a conqueror, not an elected functionary of a democratic republic.

This portion of anarchists are really more a very tribalist subculture who look and act similar and consider a few cities their meccas, like Portland. Bill is right. It's easy to rage both online and outside but the real change has to go through government at some point. The grassroots stuff helps a lot IF done right and with popular support but presenting yourself and group as a caricature of a mischievous angry mob that wants to smash and spray paint everything and repeat extreme slogans DOES NOT HELP AT ALL. I believe they help Republicans and the right and hurt the broader left (those left of Republicans altogether). Because its not reasonable to judge smart comedians and smart politicians by the same criteria. Smart comedians, like smart everyday people, say things that make sense, are generally truthful, and might have the intent to try and make society better. Smart politicians, like sociopathic criminals, say things that are self-serving, and tell the truth only when it benefits them. Successful comedians have to satisfy their audience. Successful politicians choose to deceive their audience.

The problem is when people become ideologues with that theory and don't consider that maybe the best of both worlds approach is better

Maher isn't opposed to theory. He's opposed to people who think firing off tweets and spray painting on public buildings is enough to get stuff done. Which is a very naive and lazy approach. The people who really came up with theory, even if they didn't work in public service at least took the time to write a book. Or organized their communities - and for more than just a couple demonstrations.

The problem is not trying to create a better reality based on ideology. The problem comes from people trying to push ideology not based in reality. Like these Q anon barbarians, they believe an ideology that is no way grounded in reality, as such any policy they push or utopia they attempt to achieve would by its very nature be illogical and un obtainable.

I don't think renaming more streets or schools etc. is worth our time or effort. No more renaming. Teach people all about what is there. Repurpose it. Let the past inform the present. Excellent point. Even Political Scientists get too caught up in studying "Political Parties" and "Presidential Politics" and the like. This is one reason why one of my favorite books is by Robert Lipsky "Street Level Bureaucrats: Dilemmas of the Individuals in Public Services" because it makes the point that legislation is important (and Waxman, clearly, is a diamond in the Congressional rough), but people implementing the statutes actually "make" policy. It shouldn't surprise us though. We always talk about CEOs and not assembly line workers in our economy either.
