Used the Quest 4 GTX consistently for 8 months, both toe caps are separating and the right boot sole is cracked. No longer waterproof with the damage. Love the comfort of these boots, but the materials are just not up to snuff
Been looking for a channel that does actual first impression and performance reviews on hiking boots for quite sometime now! Glad I came across your channel, keep it up.
Great boot one of my lace hooks wasn't crimped on properly when I brought mine and Salomon sorted it out straight away so pretty good customer service as well
Great review. I have had the old old ultra mid GTX for about 7 years and have loved them for shorter treks, park walks and even worn them for work. They are truly on their last legs now, so I had to find a new pair to replace them. I tried a pair of Merrel mid GTX boots which were fine in the shop but out in the real world they were virtually unwearable - poor support & brutally hard soles with hardly any cushioning. Anyhow, caved in and went for a pair of the quest 4 GTX and WOW 👌, they are so comfortable - like your favourite old slippers 😀 😄. Excellent support for your ankle, really good cushioned sole with plenty of stability, flex and fantastic grip. The only problem I have had is my feet get red hot 🥵 so I have been wearing summer weight / trail running socks. I can highly recommend them!
Your production and edits are getting much better! The lighting was great, and the pans and scene switches were very fluid. How long did it take you to produce this video? By the way, I’m a Asolo, and Lowa fan, I’ve had a few pairs of Salomons in the past, but I find they are not as durable as those other brands. Salomons are comfortable, but don’t last as long.
I have some Lowa Renegades that are amazing but a bit heavy. This video took about 2 hours in total for set up, filming and editing/exporting/uploading. One of my quickest! Thank you very much 👍🏻👍🏻
Great review! I have the salomon X ultra Trek gore-tex, if you’ve tried these how would you compare these to the hiking boot you just reviewed? I use the the X ultra for a quick throw on, hiking and camping.
It looks like the trek is pretty much the quest boot except lighter weight. I'm actually very intrigued I haven't seen much on the trek. The X ultra 4 It's definitely going to be lighter weight than the trek and a little more low profile
Well they are going to be the same exact waterproofing they both have Gore-Tex. So I’m gonna leave that one up to you, the quest does come up a little bit higher on your ankle but other than that they are exactly the same
I had the previous Quest. Very nice boot on the border of beening too clumsy for 3 season mountain hiking. BUT the plastic things that is used for the lacing is way to fragile. To bad if you just trip on a lace when going out if the tent in the middle of the night and snap, boot is broken. Salomon refunded me, but I'll never buy another boot with plastic lace holders. Too bad they didn't replace it for the new version. Is there any of those plastic lace holders on the X-ultra? Nice vid by the way!
Salomon isn't the company they were a few years ago....Once they started manufacturing in China the quality has imploded. They tried to cut costs on the materials, and now they don't last 3 months without falling apart. I switched to Lowa, Salawa, asolo, Oboz, la sportiva, and danner.
I have the quest 4 on order and will return them,I see to many complaints about them but the 2 year warranty they offer is also attractive. I have la sportiv trk leather ones ordered however they only supply a 1 year warranty. I am torn between them both to be honest however I shall settle for the la sportiv fingers crossed
I looked on your channel , but didn't see a update video . I assume they are both holding up like a tank? I do have a question as I was watching your video. The Quest toe box looks slightly wider or are they the same.
I appreciate you following up, this last year has been crazy for me but they are both holding up great, I’ve never had a problem with Salomon boots. The toolbox on them are both about the same the quest is just a little bit more substantial a boot
@@rmkvisions I just watched your updated/review video. I feel my foot is wide also, but find wide for a hiker/hills can be sloppy sometimes vs a work boot for flat surfaces. I always loved the Solomon stuff when skiing. I appreciate your reply and insight. have a nice day.
Thanks for the great video. I'm looking for a review like this foe the quest and ultra. I do irrigation and sprinkler work and also want a mid shoe for hiking in wet conditions that are in a wide. I normally take a 11.5 and maybe a 12 depending on the boot and shoe. I bought the x ultra 3 low and they are too narrow. Plus i want the ankle support. Thanks again foe the video
sorry but this is NOT a review - its just a look at - which i can do in every fuckin store alone ..... a review would be how they perform - like waterproof, stability on the foot, grip, comfort to wear and such ......no front but you know what i mean .....
I never once In this video said it was a review and that is why in the title it does not say review. This was purely a first look when the boots were released just like the title says. Thanks though ya goofer
Hey thanks for this review!! This is exactly what I was looking for! I’m thinking of getting the quest for 8 days trek for Climbing Kilimanjaro, is it a good choice or you think ultra is better? Thanks
I've been looking for a good hiking mid shoe and researching Salomon and other brands and it seems Salomon is the chouce every hiker is going to. So, i ordered a pair of the x ultra 3 gtx low rise which i didn't mind. Unfortunately they are too narrow. I wear a 11.5 to a 12 which these were 12s. Length is fine its the width. I do irrigation and sprinkler work and also want the shoe for hiking in wet conditions in very hot humid areas. What shoe would you recommend .?
What a great review. REally helped me. QUESTION: I have looked on-line and can not find the X Ultra 4 Mid in the color that you have. I can only fine white (gag), black and green. Where did you get that awesome tan color?
So I like wearing my boots everyday. Through 4 seasons. To work and everything in between. Also the occasional hike, outdoor range day and maybe a day hunt or 2 a year but not too many overnights. Between these two, which Do you recommend. (I’m used to wearing military boots like the Garmont T8)
I love want both of these!!! But I'll probably pick up the ultras 1st! Kinda of trying to step out if the leather work boots, yes will be using these also for work mainly(UPS warehouse).
But is the Quest good for short hiking too? I get the Ultra is lighter but the ankle support from the Quest is tempting me. But I mostly need it for 4-5 hours hikes (some steep). thanks
@@rmkvisions thank you for your quick answer, yeah I dont care about the price difference I just want the most comfortable boots for one-day hikes I'm torn between this 2
I just want a winter boot, that is going to keep my feet warm and dry (I know they both have gore-tex tech, but I don't know how warm they are). I am mostly going to use them in town and maybe on a mountain, in snow, once a month. Do you think the Ultra 4 is going to keep me warm enough or should I go for the Quest ? Thanks.
ce nouveau système de laçage est nul il ne sert pas du tout le milieu du pied et en raquettes a neige il fait mal au dessus du pied, je préfère celui des Salomon Quest 4d 3 GTX
thoughts on the X Ultra 4 compared to the Xa Pro. i see more people using trail runners instead rather than mid-boots. Would the Ultra 4 have better sole support as well as ankle support?
It is not insulated at all so I would suggest wearing a heavy merino wool sock. I’ve worn it in winter and done just fine, the sock is the most important part
@@rmkvisions thanks for the quick response. that seems accurate as I just got told this by salomon representative: prime is an entry level edition so no waterproofing, regular laces, and the upper isn’t quite as premium"
It's almost like a soft plastic or composite. I'm going to do a little bit more testing with it but for now it has a good lockdown feeling and I haven't noticed anything negative about it.
I’ve been wearing the X Ultra 04 shoes for 2 months now and the thin, plastic like mesh on the upper has perished already. Consequently it’s now damaged the Gore-Tex lining and water seeps in. Salomon have refunded me for the shoes with a voucher to spend on their website. I’ll be going for the Quest 4 Gore-Tex as the X Ultra’s have the same mesh which has put me off
@@rmkvisions I have literally been walking flat grounds, road and trail but nothing major. Unfortunately put me off their boots/shoes now as I’ve heard pretty poor reviews on the quest 4 as they fall apart in about the same time span
@@rmkvisions WOW, this is good to know, THANKS! I ordered the 3s a few days ago but just yesterday found out that there was a newer model (4) and now I'm looking at comparison videos about it and majority say 3 are better than 4. I kind of like the styling of the 4 though, lol. I shall keep the 3 nontheless! Thanks again!
@@rmkvisions I think they did good changing a bit from the 3's. I've put prolly 12 hours on them so far and haven't found a issue. Im not using them for backpacking, mostly as a daily summer shoe right now. I am interested in the mid gtx version though now
@@rmkvisions I’m a little confused. So for long distances you suggest the ultra, but what about multi day backpacking? Would you still suggest the ultra or the quest?
To be honest it's whatever you prefer. I have used trail running shoes on multi day backpacking before in summer. If you like that added stability and ankle support I would suggest the Quest. It is still a light boot for how much support you are getting. I think the Ultra is a great in-between/ do it all boot
@@rmkvisions it’s such a hard decision. I have tiny ankles so the ankle support would be great, but I took my Merril’s out for my first one nighter backpacking trip 4 miles up a mountain and back down and my feet were really sore and am thinking of upgrading to a better boot for a multi day Yellowstone backpacking trip this summer and I definitely plan on going on a lot more trips in the future. They both offer great features
If you think you need the extra support I would definitely go with the quest. It is an amazing boot and still very lightweight. You also get that added stability of the 4D chassis which in all honesty is very nice. It's not like it's a bulky boot by any means and definitely more of a traditional backpacking style boot!
@@rmkvisions 6 to 8 months, the outer material tore, and last pair, sole started to come off my older pair were lasting 15-18months, and sole wore out. they are my do anything dog walking shoe, the weather in uk, is pretty rubbish, , i've had lots of pairs of walking shoes, and solomons are by far my favourite.
So I work part-time at a running shoe store. A lot of shoes nowadays with how lightweight and more performance oriented they are they don't last as long. A typical shoe should last 6 to 8 months if you are wearing it everyday. That seems about standard if they were only lasting about 2 or 3 months I'd say there's probably some sort of durability issue but I don't think so. I agree I love Salomon as well.
@@rmkvisions the good thing is i've taken them back to shop every time they they have failed , and been replaced every time, which is great, i'll see if i can get the ulta 4 shoe, hopefully better quality on the 4 than 3.
I think you'll have good luck. The four to me off the bat seems very well built I have not used it enough to be able to tell full term durability though. Cheers!
For a fully waterproof boot, they both work extremely well in warmer conditions. I pair mine with a good merino wool sock for summer hiking and never have any problems! - Trevor
Interesting. I've had an old Quest pair and have never known anything else. I think I want to try the lighter X ultra - I feel like it's not often you need the heavier higher ankle support. My only question is the quality and how long the lighter ones would last.
I think the Quest overall is much better boot, especially on this new version. I’ve heard they’re going to update the X very soon so definitely excited about that
I have x ultra mid 2 gtx for about 6 years. After 4 years i had to buy new ones for hiking due to the worn sole. Anyway i still use old ones on bad weather days, winter etc. And new ones at work n during any mountain activities.
