My father used to say "don't pass up a good place to stop". I would say that applies to the Water Ghost V3 I recently received. At $180 on sale it seems to be an excellent example of value and quality.

The glide lock clasp and the Swiss movement on this San Martin SN019 is not a deal breaker for me, because personally I really like the clasp and NH35 movement on the old San Martin SN017 V3 Hulk that I already own, not to mention the clasp is a joy to operate!

After giving it some thought, I like the numbers in the white on the V3 bezel, as opposed to the platinum on the new V1 bezel, not to mention that the white numbers on the V3 would show up better under water for elapse time purposes when used for diving!

The combination of shininess of the ceramic bezel and the greyness of the numerals makes them disappear in anything but the brightest light. It's my one bugbear with the SN019.

it seems that San Martin are actually listening to their customers! I am glad that they decided to change their clasp. The on the fly adjustment was just what I was looking for! two things that I dislike: 1) the cyclops with blue AR seems a bit out of place.. they should either do one with clear AR or just give the customers the option to remove it. 2) as others have already mentioned: I also prefer their "old" logo - the applied "SanMartin" which they used on their bronze watches would fit perfectly. The hexagonal logo is nice, but I feel like its clashing with the indecies a bit. other than that, this watch looks pretty much perfect. I wouldn't mind spending this amount of money to be honest.

I couldn’t agree more. The new logo is cool but way too angular for all the round shapes found in the watch. Or maybe make the applied logo less chunky.

Gary, any chance you can see if the new glidelock clasp fits the v3 sub? I’m perfectly happy with the NH35 but I’d love the new clasp. I can’t seem to get a clear answer from SM whether or not it would actually fit.

One thing to keep in mind, you can buy those milled glide lock clasps on aliexpress cheap. I put one on a eta2824 submariner homage i modded myself from parts i found on aliexpress. Watch turned out pretty damn good.

Brent, just took a look at the Ginault Ocean Rover 2. Beautiful watch, but holy cow! $1,499! I think you may be right about it being the best Sub homage, but bringing it up here against a $200-350 San Martin is a tad unfair 😁

Man, I’m still torn if I want V2 (with the plain text) or the V3 (with the applied hex logo). I would have preferred applied San Martin text as they do on some of their other watches, but you can’t have it all. Any advice on which to get? Waiting for their summer sale on June 21.

hi gary thickness did you get on the new one?? I get 12.7mm on my V3 but I will prob order the SN019 eventually. The 4mm links on the V3 are overkill and while a very comfy watch, throughout the day it does go a touch sweatier than on Pagani homages with 3mm links, and I put that down to the links not the clasp. The clasp is excellent but I wear my watches looser and further down my wrist than you (closer to my hand)

I like that San Martin is not a fly-by-night operator and do make substantial watches even though they're homage watches. I prefer the SN017 but you couldn't go wrong with either. I have my first two San Martin on order, although they're not either of these. Once I've looked at them, chances are good that I'll pick up one of these two.

Amazing review as usual. Love the watch but the dial is very generic for the price. They need to do something special... I'm waiting for San Martin to remove the upper triangle and replace it with that chunky logo. Top text : San Martin - Impervious & Continuous Bottom text : Sea Explorer (red or blue) - 200m / 666 ft - Hi beat automatic. Get a designer involved, don't just use the first character font you find! Also logo and text proportions are important. Back case engraving would also be nice.

Around this price point I would still prefer a Swiss made Steinhart Ocean One Vintage Red and Ocean One Vintage Military. At least they try to do something a little different. PT5000 is perhaps ok but I prefer to go ETA 2824-2 or SW 200 élaboré for that kind of money. San Martin are going nuts with the prices.

@@andrei-cosmin.popa85 Exactly, surely parts of those Steinharts are made in China but at the end of the day just enough is made by the Swiss to get it in writing on the bezel. All I’m saying is San Martin should offer something less generic and lower the crazy prices, especially with Pagani Design and other “brands” offering such bang for the buck.

it probably isnt worth the extra, but nice glide style lock. Is it signficantly lighter? The problem is the bracelet thickness to me on the V3

The new bezel is now color muted in the opposite extreme IMO, just received mine today. Also, unscrewimg the crow at first I could not get the watch to go into seconds hacking/time setting mode. There is also wobble on the crown that is not present on my ghost v3. There are things I like about the new version but I'm afraid the quality control at least on mine is not up to my experience with my V3.

Glidelock addition would maintain the value proposition over the old one. It will be interesting to see where the next Cronos update goes as I think they're offering the same movements in the sub at quite a bit less money now than SM?

Hello there! Have you tried the axios ironclad subby like watch? I have one of those and I would like to know how the better san martin compares? Axios has the crazy c3x1 lume and 500m and antiscratch coat. For 500 bucks. Is the iron clad much better than san martin or is closing in? I ordered the sm 40mm version to use as a beater watch. Cheers! And thank you for the reviews. Nevermind I just saw is a 21mm lug i pass. No strap monster. Good for deskdiver not real diver.

As the price goes up a little updating the dial would be nice. Reduce the logo size, lume it, and move it to the 12 position. Then put 'San Martin' under the logo.

Hiya, I did compare the ocean 1 39mm to the original SM and the SM build quality was better, the Steinharts have better movements but yes, imo the SM was better...Steinharts are Swiss made, have better rep but if quality is your thing then SM.....

Both nice. I have older Hulk version. In my (version of SN017), the edge of the bracelet and watch case is a bit too sharp, but otherwise looks beautiful. But it's the green version, so maybe the black one will be the newer one? ;)

@@ilikewatches yea, I asked bcoz I own 1 BAPEX & an SN019 San Martin. The original equipment manufacturer behind BAPEX is Fossil. From my point of view, this BAPEX line could be considered as a good piece to collect which has a nice looking with a bit more luxury feel. I will not include the packaging here, not only focus on the piece. The QC is good too. As I have checked, there will be nothing like a bezel misaligned or strap issue. BAPE branding heritage is more about streetwear than a watch brand but It's good enough to be considered. About the price, erm, it depends on when and where you got your BAPEX. There are many on Stock X which are around 500$-600$.

This watch showed up to my house a few days ago. I ordered mine with the SW200 and there's definitely a difference between it and the PT5000. Now, on another note, all of my San Martin divers, the bezel insert isn't lined up, this watch, the BB58, and my retro diver, I also have their Datejust and the cyclops is way out of alignment. I'm really kind of disappointed with them.

Slightly gutted they didn't keep it 40mm but nevertheless it looks amazing. Two questions, did they smooth off the sharp lug edges? And does it look/feel bigger on wrist than the v3?? Tempted to sell the v3 to get this

San Martin are great watches, however, I wish they gave you the option of a date window, not a fan of the cyclops date function I would prefer it without a date window like their vintage diver.

Excelent comparision! I got the SN017 v3 but it was a turn off right on the unboxing. The way too white bezel numbers, the dull bezel grip and the depth of the dial... All of this was too off for me... These alone was worth the higher price for the SN019 so I headed for one that is just about to arrive. I really didn't even care for the better movement. I could be happy with the NH35 so the PT5000 is a big bonus (I really don't think the SW200 is worth the plus. It's not that better, if better at all, compared with the PT).

Lug to lug sounds too big tbh, I've a 6,5" wrist. When looking at these homages a few weeks ago i was leaning a bit more to the Sugess and another one (i forget which but it had a PT5000 too).

Have read PT5000 is not as reliable and has a lot of failures compared to NH35. I’ll keep the NH35 thank you. Great video !!

Love the review however, price quality comparison - could it not be explained that the price is much higher due to the more expensive movement in the new watch? NH35 vs SW200, the latter a Swiss movement clone of the ETA2824-2, higher precision watch, in my perception an explainable increase of price for the quality that you get for it? What do you think, is the better quality movement not justifying the increase of price?

Have you checked to see if the new clasp fits the old bracelet? I prefer the brushed sides of the previous bracelet. I love these comparison videos Gary, great work! Still struggling to see where the extra £90 has gone. I guess I’m just not as fussed about movements as I should be. Though I’m sure that’ll change when I eventually cave and buy myself a watch with a PT5000 movement. UPDATE: Took me 5 days from this comment to buy a watch with a PT5000 movement hahaha

On San Martin's Taobao store they are taking China domestic pre-orders for a 39mm Explorer 1016 homage, NH35, with SM's vintage calligraphy logo. I'd expect that to be on Aliexpress around June and will sell like hot cakes.

I just received an SN019 this morning and it is a really nice watch except for two issues-the screw attaching the final link to the clasp backs out and blocks the clasp lock from functioning and, a much more annoying issue, the cyclops is malaligned! It’s off 6 degrees-lines up with the 14 minute index instead of where the 15 minute index would be. Bought it from watchdives and reached out to them this morning to see if a replacement is possible.

sadly the SN019 isn't their best watch...it could be but the clasp is not good enough I don't think...my review wasn't very complimeentary

@@ilikewatches your comparison review seemed to lean towards the 019 vs the 017 from what I recall seeing. I think it’s a solid piece, just have to have an aligned cyclops!

I have the green V2, and when i saw the upgrade to the clasp i was in.... Ordered mine a couple days ago before the sale. Probably could have waited for a coupon (ugh) but i saw the first run quantity was 20 of each watch and i didnt want to wait. Thanks for the side by side, it is exactly what i wanted to see

I had a green SN017 in my cart, but eventually decided to buy a "Smurf" SN019 (PT5000) yesterday instead. It was actually $30 off when I added to checkout, thought the listing didn't say so; it cost me $311.54 after tax. I'd really have preferred a "Hulk", but I only intend to buy one Submariner homage, so the extra money over the SN017 was worth it to me based on this review. The SN017 is also discounted for $18 when I move it from the cart to checkout ($183.60), but as I said, I'm only buying one.

I have the black v3 San Martin and I’m waiting for a v2 Cronos sub with a glidelock. I might get the hulk version this 11/11 if it’s on sale.

San Martin are getting greedy but I guess as long as they keep selling units the prices will keep rising. It's a shame but that's business.

@@Owen-np3wf so true. I don’t begrudge them raising prices within reason. But when Cronos can sell a sub homage with a PT5000 and similar enough finishing for 230 cad on sale I don’t get San Martin charging $425 for theirs. I’m sure it’s nice but I doubt it justifies doubling the price for a glidelock and slightly better finishing

@@altamushg yeah your right the price isn't justified imo. A nice watch it surely is but they are riding the notoriety they achieved for selling great watching at unbelievably low prices a little hard here. The cronos is a great comparison, I think cronos intend to low ball for that reason to be a direct competitor.
