The SC-44 Charger is a brand new passenger locomotive built by Siemens in Sacramento, California. In spring of 2018, the state of California began taking delivery of brand new Charger locomotives for Pacific Surfliner service. Let's take a look at 3 of these locomotives pulling test trains on the Surfliner route in June of 2018 and then we will look at several of the soon to be replaced F59PHI locomotives pulling Surfliner trains!

Now to get rid of those cab cars... I dont see the point and amtrak could simply reverse from San Diego to Oceanside on a normal revenue service and from here use the Wye over there and continue from there.

I'm kind of glad that Amtrak is reintroducing the strobe lights it's been a long time since they utilized strobe lights Amtrak f40phs AEM-7s the P32-8whs and the first P40 Genesis engines had strobe lights and after nearly absence of 10 years Amtrak is reintroducing the strobe lights on their new Simmons charger locomotives

Neither are getting retired, don't worry! The F59PHIs are getting sent to Chicago to work the Metra system, and the P42DCs are so useful and plentiful for Amtrak that they'll be around a very long time!

The good news is that they will continue to run for at least a few more years if not longer, depending on if Amtrak decides to rebuild the P42s rather than buying new locomotives.

Amtrak's biggest fan Amtrak may retire a large portion of the P42DC fleet. Up to 70 may be given NS style rebuilds where a total overhaul is done with the addition of new electronics and AC traction. The unfortunate fact of the matter is the fleet is falling apart, as most GEs do as they approach 30 years old.

Great footage Mike and glad you were able to get footage. I was hoping to see those test runs myself but never had much luck as either in the wrong place or wrong timing. However, I will get them someday as they are future replacements for the F59s. -Jon

Hi Mike!! It is my birthday! I am on the way to the beach, I am in Escondido right now, hopefully sprinter trains pass!! Good video btw. Edit: i was in Oceanside. Train 769 arrived from San Diego, I saw my first CDTX car trailing behind 456. I wish I had my camera ready. I did get a picture of Sprinter/NCTD 4001.

trainfan06 That's not Phase V. Official documentation has not been released on it yet so we don't really know what it is, just that it's not Phase V.

I've been seeing these on the Joliet Subdivision, Chicago to St. Louis. I think Illinois was the first state to have the SC-44 be put in service. P42DC locomotives still run on superliner trains like the Texas Eagle, but the Lincoln Service would have an SC-44.

I find these new Chargers very interesting but I need to see one in person though and they are cool looking but I'm really going to miss those F59s though like you can't beat the originals but I still think they're pretty cool and as long as they have the K5LA horns which means that Amtrak has the horn that was designed perfectly for them to play a nice musical chord...Nice catches and great one with 457 once again!!! :) +CoasterFan2105

Probably at least through the end of July if not longer. I have heard that California is going to buy 6 of them back for continued use on Surfliner trains.

Most likely the F59’s will be used by Metra commuter service when they get to Chicago. VRE(Virginia Rail Express) & MARC(Maryland Rail Commuter Service) uses the F59’s 9n their non electric lines.

Christopher S. O' They are coming to Metra. VRE and MARC don't use F59's, they use MP36's. Metra also uses MP36's but will soon be both plus more.

Question... I know that it's a test train, and the bi-levels are heavier than Amfleets or Horizons, but why on earth were there 3 units for just four cars? That just seems like a waste of fuel, regardless of how fuel-efficient the Chargers are

These are called "acceptance testing" runs. Basically, they are being tested in service to make sure they are all good to go before being accepted for revenue service. Using 3 at once is more efficient than doing separate runs for each unit.

Russell Streak They probably had the other two locomotives there for load testing, i.e. throw 2 into dynamic braking and 1 into notch 8 to make sure everything works under stress.

Right now I feel about the Chargers the same thing I felt about the T4 ACes when the demonstrators first popped up; that doesn’t look quite right. But after seeing the T4 demonstrators that BNSF were mucking about with in person my mind changed in a single instant and I suddenly really, REALLY liked them. I think that might happen to me again when I encounter a Charger in person.

I'm not a big fan of the Chargers AT ALL. They don't look that nice, with that.. Front situation. They could definitely use more paint on the front and maybe a better livery for them when they get into revenue service. I have to say though, I've never experienced strobe lights on Amtrak locomotives, so when they creep over to my locale in Florida this might be interesting! Well, they're already here with Brightline, but from what I've seen, they lack strobe lights. I pity you though, Coaster is gonna order some SC-44s soon. Speaking of that, will they keep some F40s on standby?

Eh. They don't really fit the aesthetic of the trains. Especially with that weird hump on the back and the lack of a proper nose (what's up with that anyway?). I'll miss the F59PHi's. I still don't get whey they're getting rid of the old before the new is fully here. It just means more borrowing from AMTRAK proper. I know the lights in the engine compartments are likely just on for testing, but it looks really cool!

They're not going to be doing that. There will still be quite a few P42s on the Surfliner, and the SC-44s are only being phased in gradually.

The Surfliner scheme for the Chargers basically looks like the Amcal scheme with the Surfliner logo and white instead of yellow. There may still be 6 F59s that stay in Surfliner service.

BNSFGUY7777 The brand new scheme is a modified version of Phase V with the newest Surfliner logo. Basically a mix between Phase V and the current Pacific Surfliner scheme.

Is it me or are the horns on the F59 starting to be worn? If so why can't be replaced with new horns? Great video btw! I'll miss those F59s :(

The funny thing is, a lot of the F59 horns now are pretty new. They get clogged with debris because of where they are mounted.

Nah, they're being transferred to Chicago for service over there. They're not done yet!

ive seen the new pacific surfliner logo and the new scheme and they look good on the sc-44 although i wish they had the red stripe

With the new SC-44 locomotives that will be pulling the Pacific Surfliners, Capital Corridor & San Joaquin train that are capable of going up to 125 MPH, maybe the length of the schedule of the Pacific Surfliner trains can be cut from the 2 hour 45 minutes between San Diego & Los Angeles can be cut down to no more than 2 hours with the stops it makes. A faster schedule means more ridership which in turn can lead to more scheduled Pacific Surfliner, Coaster Commuter & Metrolink commuter train service between San Diego, Anaheim & Los Angeles as well as increased service between Los Angeles, Goleta & San Luis Opisbo.
