I mounted up the Leupold Mark 4 HD 4.5x18 to the custom 6.8 Western rifle as I have wanted to transition from second focal plane to first focal plane. This scope will replace my Zeiss Conquest V4.
I also decide on which bullet I am taking hunting this season and stretch the new scope out to 1000 yards.

Great channel, it’s great to have some love for the 6.8 Western. Keep it up. For the Itch, a 280 AI I think would be an interesting choice.

Always eager to watch your videos. I've not had the best success with longer range accuracy and monolithics either. Inside 500 no problem. Regarding that itch you have for something new/different, I get it and I hate it! Hard on the wallet. I pushed it off for a couple decades but finally pulled the trigger on the 280AI and I have to say it has really impressed me. I now have 3, having just picked up the 3rd one 2 weeks ago and shot it this past Friday with factory Federal Terminal Ascent - a total of 10 rounds starting with a new never fired Brux barrel. The last 3 shots were at around 3/8". I now know why people say the 7RemMag is inefficient compared to a 280AI, but I still love my 7RemMags. I am also going to put together two 708s with 9 twist barrels. My current main 2 projects are the 300WSM - long/modified and the 270-7PRC. The 300WSM has 210 Berger VLDs seated long and the chamber body is opened up 0.002 over SAAMI spec. I can't fall in love with short action magnums for some reason so I got a reamer made and have to use a medium to long action. Last session the 210 Berger VLD was at 2850fps, 24" 9 twist Brux and Reloder 22, no pressure yet. The 270-7PRC is just that, 7PRC necked down. The last range session produced a 170 Berger EOL at 3250fps from an 8 twist 4 groove 24" cut-rifled K&P barrel. Both of these are on hold because my action is back with the gunsmith along with more barrels and my reamers. #2 270-7PRC has the same barrel but will be in a Kauger action. Should be done hopefully by end of this month. I also have a Benchmark barrel in 9 twist and another on the way in 8.5 twist and 2 Brux barrels, and 8 and 8.5 twist, all #3 contour for 270-7PRC testing. These will all join a Terminus QC action except maybe 1 or 2 I'll save to go with Tikka actions. I want a light weight carry rifle in 270-7PRC on a Tikka action and Peak44 stock so that plan is a 9 twist barrel and 150 or 165 Nosler ABLR.

It would be cool to see you do a 270 wsm with a 1-8" twist and compare it to the 6.8 western. I understand if it's too similar for you though. I would suggest going to a range in TX before the challenge. Your elevation is definitely going to be off down here close to sea level.

FFP just sucks at base magnification. That’s one reason I like my v4. Sfp and you can dial easy

If you want something different, that has lost it's luster in the wake of 6.5CM and 6.5PRC, but is an absolute accurate round if built correctly, try a 6.5-284 Norma. Yes I know we have the 6.5PRC and 6.5 Creedmoor and there's plenty of ammo and brass but when I had my first 6.5-284 Norma built I was so impressed with it I built another, AFTER I got my first 6.5PRC. I currently have two 6.5PRCs and a third on the way on a Tikka action. Just 2 weeks ago I took yet another Tikka T3x to build my 3rd 6.5-284 Norma. I have found this cartridge to shoot so accurately and consistently with little to minimal recoil, it's my favorite 6.5mm cartridge. I have 2 rifles with multiple loads using 130 Accubonds, 140 Berger VLDs, 140 JLKs, 127 LRX and none have ever grouped over 0.600 for 3 shot groups. In fact, the 140 BVLDs are 1/2" at 200 yards but I've only done that shooting from a bench. They are loaded with Retumbo. I bought a bunch of Tikka T3x Hunter rifles, left hand, new at auction for no more than $785 shipped, all 30-06. The intent is converting all to 280AI and 6.5-284 Norma and possibly 270 O'Connor (280AI necked down to 270). Alaskan Ballistics, a RU-vidr, killed his big bull moose with his 6.5-284 Norma and 127 Barnes LRX. Thus, there's nothing I wouldn't hesitate to hunt with it (but I don't hunt big brown bears).

7wsm or a 300PRC would be cool

Staying with less common cartridges, you should go with the 7PRCW. Not SAMMI, but there is a company that chambers barrels and makes reloading dies. For those who don’t know, it’s just a 6.5 PRC necked up to 7mm. Eric Cortina, and Ultimate Reloader and a few others have showcased them and they are winning a lot of long range competitions.

Oh yeah first comment: if youre staying with a short action I'd try the 300wsm or 325wsm, I'd say 7wsm but that's so close to the 6.8 western maybe the 7 saum, erik cortina was playing with the 7prcw (6.5prc necked up to 7mm, adg sells the brass) this round peaks my interest. Jim harmer says 7mm at 3k is the sweetspot so I'd be curious to see what happens on a custom build.

That’s a nice scope, and good shooting. I suggest trying the 325 wsm. Go the big heavy rout in a short action and see how it works out. The 338 ram is interesting,I have one, but is almost impossible to do much with at this point.

Glad to see another video! Can you please remind me which powder you use for the 170's? I think an interesting build would be a 7wsm to compare to your sisters 7PRC or a good old 280 AI.

7 rem mag 8 twist or 6.5 PRC. Also, if you seriously want to shoot tight @1000, you need more rifle weight.

Yep. 15lb rifle at least if it's just for hitting steel at 1000

You could go with a 6mm of some kind or go with a fast twist 257 cal option if you want something a bit different. A 25 Creedmoor or maybe step up to a 25-284 for more speed. On the larger side maybe something like a 325 WSM or one of the 338 short magnums. Your 6.8 Western covers a lot of what most 7mm's and 300's will do. I suppose a faster twist 300 WSM would be good and enough different from your 6.8 Western to be noticeable.
