Selmer Paris Claude Delangle Alto Mouthpiece: sax.co.uk/prod...
Jim plays the brand new Selmer Paris Claude Delangle Alto mouthpiece! Based on the immensely popular Concept mouthpiece, the all new Selmer Paris Claude Delangle features a new design that combines ebonite and metal.
It has a warm and beautiful sound with great projection. A depth of tonal colours and a smooth, even matching tonal quality through the full range of the saxophone.

I see everyone saying “I prefer ___ over this mouthpiece,” but I don’t think anyone should be making comparisons based off this video. It doesn’t matter how good a mouthpiece is; if the player isn’t trained for years in classical voicing, embouchure, and repertoire, then you aren’t getting a true demonstration of how well the mouthpiece sounds.

Update to my previous comment here. I have had this mouthpiece for a few months. I was looking for a mouthpiece that had some projection, was smooth sounding without any buzz but it was not bright or too dark and a tip opening I can play on due to physical limitations I find a mouthpiece on alto with a tip over 1.85mm, too hard to play but I still wanted some more projection that narrower tip mouthpieces often don't have. I was reluctant to get this at first due to the price but I decided to go for it if it would help my playing progress in a positive way. At first I was playing a Yamaha YAS-280. I was using legere signature reeds which I liked on my Selmer S80 C** and Soloist E so I assumed they would have a similar response on the Claude Delangle which they did. I had to try several ligatures to find one that didn't add resistance as I found with the gold plated bore, I could feel the resistance in my embouchure. I eventually settled on a Selmer one screw silver plated ligature. I had to use a BG reed performer patch on the reed to raise it up to fit the ligature well. Playing it I did notice a bit of resistance. Once I got used to it, I had a nice smooth round sound that wasn't stuffy like you can get from some mouthpieces and it was clear and with plenty of projection, especially when used in a room where the sound could reverberate well. When I tried it recently on my new Yanagisawa AWO2, I had to get the neck cork adjusted to fit it but once I did, I had a big warm smooth sound on it that was a bit less resistant and while I need more time to play the AWO2 with it, its now became my favourite classical mouthpiece and I feel I can push it to other styles as a crossover classical/Jazz mouthpiece if I want, just without the edge or extra projection Jazz mouthpieces often have.

@@Bob-hv6dy In truth, there is NO such thing as a "classical mouthpiece". The same setup, and the instrument can play New Orleans jazz, which is 'jazz classic style'. So the statement is utterly ridiculous by itself. Some materials do tend to lend a hand to certain styles, because of the historic context, but the offer is valid as much as the player is ready or has enough talent. So I don't understand this utterly ignorant attack on Jim who only said what MUST be said: this mouthpiece is READY for classically-inspired music too and else.

It has to do with the small square chamber shape. Only the Soloist Style has something close to it with its horseshoe chamber, but not the same. S90 has a larger square chamber, but it doesn't beat S80. S80 is unbeatable. Especially by round chamber mouthpieces, which is every other mouthpiece in the world.

I could play the hell out of this piece for a type of Paul Desmond jazz sound., Does it have a round chamber?
@DynamixWarePro
@DynamixWarePro 4 года назад
Yes it has a round chamber. I have it and the Delangle and have had it for a week and it has a smooth sound with some depth and just a little more brightness than other similar mouthpieces but also very good projection due to the gold plating. I did notice there is resistance in the low and altissimo notes and its taken practise to be able to play the low notes softer compared to my S80 C** with the same tip opening. The altissimo sounds fuller but it is a bit resistant also. I am not so sure about the it being able to get you that Paul Desmond sound, however if you do want a mouthpiece that might, try the JodyJazz HR* Custom Dark Alto. From hearing recordings of it, it has a fluffy dark sound that could work well for a Paul Desmond like sound.

@DynamixWarePro
@DynamixWarePro 4 года назад
I have an S80 C** and like the tone I get with it for classical playing. I would have got a Concept but it only had one tip choice and it just wasn't wide enough for me, but I like the sweet centered tone the Concept has. I can hear the zing you mentioned in the Claude Delangle mouthpiece, it made it a little brighter sounding and I can hear the projection over the other two. Perhaps it was because you are not a classical player, with the way you played it, it didn't quite have that classical sound, but given to a classical player, they might have gotten a better classical tone on it. Not that I dislike your tone as I quite like it normally, but maybe you could see if you could find a classical saxophone player when doing videos on classical mouthpieces and setups rather than having a non classical player do them.

I prefer the Concept, the Delangle is a bit too bright for my taste. As a classical player I recently switched over from S90 190 (which I always preferred over S80D) to Concept on soprano. It made me jump from Vandoren Traditional 3 to Trad 4, giving me greater depth of sound and far better control. I'm probably going to make the same switch on tenor soon.

I know I’m a bit late here, but this is specifically a classical mouthpiece for specifically classical playing. The internal geometry, being the baffle and chamber, both suggest classical playing. The material has absolutely no effect on tone, it simply effects the response. And don’t start with that “there is no such thing as classical and jazz mouthpieces” bull shit because while it’s possible to play Pictures at an Exhibition on a Dukoff, you will never be hired as a classical sax player again if you do
