Yep that is a bearing or Babbitt scraper. Most Atlas lathes have dings in the ways under the chuck from dropping chuck on them. If you keep it clean it up and put a new coat of paint on it.500 bucks seems to be the market price here in Ohio also.
That's a great addition to your shop and something what you can use and teach with. Some folks say they are too small or not ridgid like other brands, but, those are workhorses. I have one thats been in the family since 1952, and its still used to this day to make things with.
I did not know that, I was looking at it closer today and I believe it’s homemade, the v ways are a little rough but still overall it’s a nice usable tool for how little I use inspection type stuff
Sounds like your son will really appreciate your newest purchase. The time spent with him on it will far outweigh the $500 price. And you can always start selling some hacksaws if you went over budget.
