NEW BEEKEEPING VIDEO. Review and HOW TO set a BEE SAFE Diatomaceous Earth Small Hive Beetle trap, which is a bee safe non-toxic Physical Insecticide. Especially the super fine Absorbacide - amzn.to/10YbxVA - ultra fine dust less than 15 microns in size - which acts like razor blades to the small hive beetles outer casing. Once the hive beetles outer wax coating is compromised, it dries out and dies quickly. As it is a physical insecticide, the beetles will not build up a resistance to it. Diatamaceous Earth DE is a relatively safe insecticide to use for the control of the little pest hive beetles, however, in larger amounts, it can also kill your bees. So use it wisely and carefully. Still, the crystalline silica shards are non toxic, which to us is a whole lot more acceptable for use in our apiary than their chemical based counter parts. DE does not present any health hazards and has been approved by CSIRO for organic food producers. Other alternatives include oil based traps, such as the AJ Beetle Eater, or Beetle Blaster amzn.to/10YbCJ0, trap or similar under hive IPK Screened Bottom Board & Small Hive Beetle Traps amzn.to/1y8lMAI that also work well. These contain vinegar and oil in a dark plastic trap which has small openings on the top and as the bees chase the beetles around the hive, the beetle enters the trap and can no longer escape. Fantastic traps, but a little too messy. Oil often spills throughout the hive, and need to be replaced, emptied or replaced. Not the most pleasant task a beekeeper has to do during a hive inspection. So, we are trialing this neat version of Diatamaceous Earth Small Hive Beetle Trap. Costs around a dollar per unit, is reusable, kills beetles over a long period of time if kept DE remains dry, is bee friendly and easy to handle even when propolized by the bees. Beekeepers can prepare the traps away from the beehive, and simply place them on top of their frames under the top cover for easy access and manipulation.
There are many great ways beekeepers deal with hive beetles and their control methods will vary widely. Similar traps can be homemade using a CD cover, a politicians sign, or any other similarly shaped containers. Let us know in the comments section below what methods you may have used or continue to use, especially if they work well. We'd love to hear from you!
Hope you can join us next time, and please subscribe, share and/or give us thumbs up if you have found our videos useful. We and the bees very much appreciate your support.

Thank you for posting the above video and for the replies to comments. I'm glad you maintain a great attitude, even with negative, pessimistic feedback. I think some people should think about what they're saying and the tone it might convey, before they post a comment. Is it something they'd say to their grandmother? Keep up the sharing! :-)

I see this is an old post and these look cool, but with 14 links to the item and none of them work, the original one was for New South Wales?, I'm in SC. I just ebayed some beetle barns which you can order for about 1.25 each and are a similar design except only has 1 big cavity in the middle . I was going to mix crisco and boric acid ( roach powder ) in mine which is not really toxic but gets in beetles exo skeleton the same way the DE does, I might put some of that in there after seeing this.

Does the SHB trap fit inside the hive. Do you place it flat on the base board, if so how do you access it to clean it outor refill it? Where do you buy these traps?
@MahakoBees
@MahakoBees 8 лет назад
+Ken Fletcher Hi. yes, these traps fit easily through the entry, and yes you can easily open the SHB traps, clean them and refill. Many times over. These traps are fantastic, and are manufactured by Mount Sylvia Diatomite. Here is their website if you are interested in ordering some: www.mtsylviadiatomite.com.au. Best of luck in your beekeeping endeavors! www.mahakobees.com/store.html.

Hi, It has been a while since we got these, but after a search through our files, we subsequently found some on eBay. A little more expensive, but here is the link: www.ebay.com.au/itm/Beekeeping-combined-lot-10-DE-small-hive-beetle-traps-100g-DE-powder-/111434358362?pt=AU_Business_Industrial_Farming_Agriculture_Farming_Agriculture_Equipment&hash=item19f2015e5a

Why do you fill the comments with your own? It is very annoying and I would subscribe but you apparently do not want to see any comments but your own.

ArtisanTony Very good point Artisan and we are also annoyed with this. We don't do it on purpose, but for some reason, when we post to different Communities (one at a time as there doesn't appear to be an automated way to post to several at the same time), they show up in the comments on RU-vid as well. Any suggestions? We may need to delete them manually?
@ArtisanTony
@ArtisanTony 9 лет назад
Mahako Bees Well I have been on RU-vid for 7 years and have never seen this before. You can delete them easily. If these people are in your circles on google plus, you only have to post it there once for them to see it. You can't make people watch your videos. Create good content and they will come to you.
@MahakoBees
@MahakoBees 9 лет назад
Off course, totally agree and we try our best to be a genuine channel providing useful information. However, we understand that sharing on communities is like sharing with your subscribers, and unless you post your content to each community (by "sharing" to it from your RU-vid channel to Google+) and specify a particular community you are a member of, they would not know about your new content. Perhaps there is a tick box setting in Google+ to NOT show the community reshares on the RU-vid channel. It would be nice if Google allowed sharing to all our communities in a single posting rather than having to do it repeatedly for each specific one. We'll look into this. It has been bothering us for a long time. Thanks for your feedback though. Much appreciated.

It is disingenous to "show" a product and not provide a direct link to purchase the item. These folks do give you a link to Amazon to buy DE, but without the trap who cares. All the post from Mahako Bees are 11 months old. Be careful in dealing with these folks as they are not keeping their site current and can't seem to answer the simple question of where this product can be purchased. No points for just pointing to eBay which does not show this product.
@MahakoBees
@MahakoBees 9 лет назад
+Richard Pechner Hi Richard. Apologies for not providing a direct link. Sadly, as per our subsequent posts on Google Plus and responses to queries, we were unable to find the product ourselves either. This channel, the websites, research, videos, text and content is run as a hobby outside our full time employment and family commitments, as a contribution to the beekeeping community. We make no profits. Therefore, this video was a sharing of information on a great new product we found and used and felt it was worth sharing. Admittedly, we have been unable to load new content for the last 14 weeks due to family reasons and work commitments. But we still plan to continue growing and improving on our content. We hope you can visit us in the future. Thanks for your comments, we did not mean to come across and disingenuous. Apologies.
