People forget that although Snape was bullied, he was a bully himself in school and after. We don’t get to see scenes of it but as a reader we are told that Snape didn’t hesitate to curse James and Sirius behind their backs as well. He had friends at school that he was open only planning to join the death eaters after graduation with. His story is tragic and indicative of a victim of generational trauma. His only redeeming quality was that he could love someone as deeply as he loved Lilly, even then his desires to serve Voldemort are the only reason he didn’t marry Lilly himself. James didn’t steal her, Snape pushed her away.

Even then i think in the friendzone of Lily. James is just too much of a good guy with physical beauty.
@Redrosewitch

Oh yes. The greatness of Snape as a character is that J.K Rowling enables us to sympathise with his plights whilst also despising him for the choices he makes. His childhood was clearly hellish. No wonder he longed for school. He was lonely. So no wonder it was bliss for him to discover that one of the Evans girls was just like him. Lily treated him like a person with worth. So no wonder he idolised her. At school he and Lily were still friends, even being in different houses. But there are already cracks appearing when Severus is getting too close to fellow Slytherins like Malfoy, who are not a good influence on him. There's zero excuse for the ways that James and Sirius bully Severus. Of course he wants to fight back. But when we later learn that he's invented spells as bad as Sectum Sempra. We can see how much he's absorbing the dark side, to find the power to fight. Then, of course there's his big mistake. During OWL exam time, Lily backs him up while James and Sirius are publicly tormenting him. And in his embarrassment he throws out the worst of insults 'mudblood'. For Lily it's the final straw. Then as a teacher, he uses his power over Harry to torment him, as a reminder of his father, and the fact that Lily chose James in the end. No matter what we can sympathize with Snape over, nor what we can admire him for. This is still despicable behaviour.

JK Rowlings stated that there's nothing as bad as a teacher who bullies their students to settle old scores with their parents for whatever slights that were inflicted upon them. I concur with her that such incidences occur more often than most people would like to admit. I recall in primary school grade 5 one of my classmates incurred the ire of my homeroom teacher who often verbally berated him whenever he made even the smallest and unintentional mistakes. My homeroom teacher would often yelled at the poor kid that he was just like his father a hard headed little devil hell bent on wrecking mischief and god forbid that anyone in class took his side we would also incur her wrath and be labeled as little devils too.

Except that Snape didn't know about Neville being the other boy considered. At least at the time. He might have figured it out later. I like how some people always assume that Snape had first hand knowledge of Neville being the other boy almost considered. However Snape was not part of Voldemort's inner circle at this time. He was a 21 year old kid regulated to listening at doors, and spying on Dumbledore. Also, if Lily had just moved, or Voldemort forced her to move, stunned her, or placed her in a body bind...she would also still be alive. It really doesn't have a whole lot to do with Neville at that point. Voldemort had the choice not to kill her, but he did anyway.

It's hard to underestimate the importance of Snape's Slytherin partisanship in this story: you'd think he would have welcomed a student as bright as Hermione, no matter who she was, so one has to wondering how he'd have treated her if she was a Slytherin.

It certainly had to do with Snapes bitterness about Lily, her death, him being ripped from the life he had made with the death eaters at the right hand of the dark Lord, and Harry representing James. But I think once Harry's first year was over and it was clear Voldemort was trying to come back, I think that arc of behavior had so much to do with occlumency. Any moment of caring or love towards Harry could've been used to undermine Snapes ability to protect Harry. Not just by getting inside of Harrys mind but those around him, such as Malfoy. I'm fairly certain that Voldemort, while staying at Malfoy Manor, would have used occlumency on Draco to search his memories about Harry in his developing years. If Draco had witnessed Snape being nice towards Harry even once, it could've destroyed everything.

Snape’s gradual fall into darkness was a play of almost all factors all working in unison to push him into it. His family, friends, enemies, and even environment all worked lock step in pushing him farther into it with the sole thing not being lily. Yes it lead to their falling out but when you look at sheer contrast between the amount of influential factors it would’ve been a miracle if it didn’t end that way seeing as the overwhelming amount of factors going against him turning to the light. After lily he had 0 reason to be on the side of the light and all the reason not to so of course he did that at first who wouldn’t. No one wants to be alone. The greater feat in my opinion is a person in this same scenario still going against the overwhelming tide of influences and turn his back on the darkness that all accepted and respected him and side with the light that all unanimously rejected him. People are products of equal parts nature and nurture and when one goes against the other it just hinders all their potential as we see with snape. Imagine what he could’ve done with a healthy loving family and friends from the start he couldn’t been the next Dumbledore tbh such a shame. Lesson here to not bully I guess

Ahh there's a point I hadn't considered. Yes. Lily had a child, in a loving relationship with a man Snape hated. But it must also have reminded him that he himself put the final nail in his own relationship with Lily. She wasn't happy seeing him with future Death-eaters.But she let it go, for the sake of their friendship. What she couldn't forgive was when he threw that foulest of insults 'mudblood' at her. I wonder how often he mentally kicked himself for that moment?

And Snape started at Hogwarts in 1971. they must've met after joining Voldemort's gang. But he could've known Regulus or Barty Jr. or the 2 death eaters that lilly mentioned in that memory.

I thought of Snape's behavior toward Harry as a perfect cover. Voldy doesn't see him help Harry because the dislike is obviously. It's a practical application and he has no problem in his role because Harry's resemblance (behavior and appearance) to James makes Snape's motivate easy. Keep in mind that all teaching is performative. We play a role. A Welsh instructor I knew always taught in his dark role -- just like Snape. I asked him once about this, perhaps before any HP book came out. The instructor told me the robe was his costume. In other words, he's staging himself to seem a certain way. An actor needing a wig, robe and such to get into a role is very similar. And Snape had to carefully stage himself. That's why he's an elusive character. I also think the films only showing a small portion of classes means the worst of Snape as teacher was probably not going to be filmed. So, I don't think the films got Snape wrong, really. He had to be "all grey" in order to fool people not not understand his intentions as well as for Rowling to create a workable story. Imagine if readers knew about Snape's "real"" self too soon. Nope, can't do it. Kinda ruins the end of the series.

Regardless of Snape’s past, he was a bully. He bullied students in every house but his. Harry and Neville got the worst of it, because of Snape’s issues. It is bad enough when a fellow student is a bully, but when a teacher is, that goes beyond cruelty and straight into evil. In elementary school we had a teacher who was known as a horrible bully. He forced students to eat everything on their tray no matter what. Now that might not sound horrible, but it sent my brother to the emergency room. My brother had sever allergies and asthma, he told the teacher repeatedly that he was allergic to peas. The teacher forced him (would not allow him to leave his seat) to eat every one on his tray. My brother’s face and airways began to swell. The office called my mom but did not tell her what had happened. Once he was able to talk my brother told her the whole story. The school refused to do anything about the teacher that time. My mom did manage to get them to pay for my brother’s er visit and the time she lost at work. We found out later the principal had a reason to keep the school board out of it so he agreed to pay. He did at least stop forcing students to eat everything on their trays, but did not stop bullying students. Sadly not long after this, he beat four students leaving bruises from half way up their backs down to their calves. When the school ignored the parents, they went to the newspapers. Believe it or not the teacher was asked to switch school districts. Keep in mind this was the 1970’s, luckily today this would never be allowed to happen. The principal did end up in jail due to fraud. He made a deal with school suppliers. They would give him expired milk and food and split the money.

If the claws made contact with Snape, would he not develop wolf-like tendencies or Lycanthropy? My thoughts are if Bill Weasley was attacked by Fenrir Greyback when it wasn't a full moon, and still developed tendencies, wouldn't Snape also develop at least traits from a scratch during full moon?

I disagree that he helped Harry because he cared or wanted to spare his life. Snape's obsession with Lily is his only motivation. He wanted revenge against Voldy and knew the only way to do so was Harry being the only one to kill him. Harry was the means to an end. IMO Now it would be different if he only abuse, mistreated Harry BUT he abused, mistreated, bully all students not apart of his house. How he did Neville and Herminone and others was despicable, unacceptable, should have been addressed by Dumbledore or other teachers. I too have been abused by parents and bullied, I have never taken out my trauma on others especially children, dealing with their own trauma, especially Harry. 😢

Not to mention that there were children of fellow death eaters there to see everything he did in public. His shock at finding out Harry had to die says it all to me. He HAD to appear a certain way to keep his cover, but I think he was very different underneath it all.

@@korie4198 What about making Harry serve detention by rubbing James and Sirius' past detentions in his face...while he was likely still mourning Sirius? None of his colleagues' children were there to report on that.

Don’t see Snape as complex. Was he bullied? Yds. All he did was mistreat a boy for his appearance. Got what he deserved.

Yeah right, hermine just couldn't and wouldn't take a hint just to keep her mouth shut and show her knowledge of her class work in writing instead of being an insufferable know it all, but I do like how smart she is in the books and movies, they all have their own talents.😊

Uhm, in Ron's wise words, Snape ased a question, why ask if he doesn't want to be told. Last time I checked class manners, answering questions that a teacher asked is perfectly FINE.

I totally agree with your views on the LGBT people. They should be treated and loved for whom they are and not hated. I also play Hogwarts Mysteries and it is a great game; I've played it since COVID.

Harry is the son that Severus SHOULD have had. As Professor Snape, Harry is the "bad" child of the teacher. Snape loves Harry because he loves Lily. He protects Harry like a father would.

He doesn't LOVE Harry, he only protects him because Dumbledore convinced him that in doing so he would make Lily's sacrifice didn't go in vain.

I completely disagree. What Snape is doing is to teach us to be tough instead of being emotional little cry babies especially the boys. Make a man out of them is what he teaches. We live in a time where emotions are protected through things like PC culture and all what it does is to make anyone weak which allows governments to enslave the mass.

Are you drinking? Snape is not a good role model in the way he treats people. He is just a shitty person with poor emotional control. His whole character is a angry man baby.

Actually, what Snape is teaching is hold grudges on your school bullies and bully not only their children but other children too. The only reason you should not your bully's kid is because you had the hots for his mother.

@@sanjoykumardas4018 Snape do not bully the children. He teaches them to be tought. He perceive being sentimental as weakness. He say to Harry that he shall control his emotions. Its a form of stoicism he teaches which is strength.
