In this video I'm going to show you the new Sony 50mm f/1.4 GM lens. It's the second 50mm GM from Sony and this time we get the smaller and more compact lens with f/1.4 aperture. The lens is incredibly well build - just like all the other GM lenses - we have aperture ring, that can be lockable and declickable, two custom buttons, mf to af switch and filter size of 67mm. Equipped with 2 linear motors it does have extremely fast and accurate AF system and the sharpness of this lens is just unreal. Check the video and the samples.

I teraz mam dylemat. Mam Planara - to chyba najczęściej używany mój obiektyw. Tylko za każdym razem jak chcę po za 50 zabrać coś więcej (szczególnie większą ogniskową) to zaczynam cierpieć. Kusi mnie to szkło ale jednocześnie żal mi rozstać się z Planarem :D

Size and weight is the biggest (smallest) difference and the 4 XD vs 2 XD motors Size and weight matter more for me and even though I shoot pro sports where the extra 2 XD motors would arguably give me reason to choose the 1.2

In one week from now you’ll get my comparison video with side to side photos! In general 1.2 will give you extra smoothness when object is closer to the background. The difference is smaller the further your object is from background.

I would say wait for comparison. The cost difference, weight is sizable. I have 50 1.2 and while I love it, if I had to buy now I would go with 1.4 with the two advantages.

Zeiss bokeh is far superior compared to both Sony versions and Sigma counterpart. I would ALWAYS pick the lens with better color rendering and out of focus characteristics than one that shows marginally better sharpness.

Sharper lenses usually have less creamy bokeh. I would pick the ZA for ~$1000 but its price tag of $1500 is too much compared to $1300 of the 1.4 GM

I have a sony 1.2 GM but now honestly, it's a pretty heavy lens and I'm so jealous that sony release this at almost half of the price. Having a 67mm diameter also saves u from buying another lens filter if u already have the 24 35 siblings. Man, I might sell the 1.2, but thinking about the A7IV I might save it for the extra stop of light (I have A7SIII as well).

I feel that on a 50... F1.2 or F1.4 the bokeh different is kind of marginal. Maybe it could be more pronounce if the lens was 85. Meanwhile.. will sit and wait for the latter.. hopefully it wont be too heavy or big..

Recently a bride asked me if I could bring a less sharp lens to their free ceremony after shooting her civil wedding. She was seeing to many wrinkles with the planar 50mm 1.4, so I guess this one is overkill in sharpness 🤣 I'd rather want a 1.8 (or 1.6?) G-Master for less. Imagine how small and light Sony could make such a lens with plenty sharpness

You can always take away sharpness by dropping clarity or texture, it is much harder to add sharpness in post to a less sharp lens

Yep same here. My hopes completely died for such a lens. Sony seems to consider only 1.4 as true G Master Pro lenses. They made the 50mm 2.5 G - I think this is a statement. If you want a good 50mm get the 2.5, if a real pro lens there's this now.

The step is a bit big imo, especially considering the price. I'd rather have a 50mm 1.8 (or 1.6) G-Master for 1000€ than this crazily expensive lens.

Hi, I got this lens few days ago. Been out with it today and it’s so easy to forget that your wide open and I was blown out, way too much light. It seems you have to move shutter speed up over 640 to compensate. Not sure if it’s as good as my Sony 24-70mm gm

Awesome insight as always..for some photographers at this point..its all about that lower f-stop..1.2>1.4..im sure this 1.4 is amazing like its "bigger sibling" the 1.2..and of course now you are paying for the price difference..is around $700 USD worth it for a 1.2 or 1.4..like I said at this point for some photographers..its just clout and bragging rights that "I paid more than you" for a 1.2..haha at the end of the day our clients can't even tell and even some photographers can't even tell what image is what..1.2 or 1.4 image..its weird that Sony still chose to make this 1.4 GMlens? seems like there is no need for it when you have that 1.2?..now you're putting the lens against each other for sales?..when you could have just made customers not have the ability to choose and make them choose the only one 50 GM 1.2..lol I am just waiting for that 85 1.2 GM!! haha im sure it will be around the same design as that 50 1.2 GM..slightly smaller and lightweight would be perfect..

What would you to differently to review the lens like this? I took the claims from the producer and tried it out on real life shoots and showed the results.
