Rep. Chad Brown (D-Plaquemine) proposed a bill - HB 509 - allowing pharmacists to tell patients about less expensive medication options. It would also forbid pharmacy benefit managers (PBMs) from interfering with insurance rates based on discounts available to some patients.

You can always ask your pharmacist about a cheaper version or generic, they aren’t outlawed from answering your questions!

Also it's a good plan when you go to your doctor ask if this medication is one that comes in a generic. They will know that, if it doesn't it'll cost a lot more. Ask if there's anything else that might be appropriate if this is something you can't afford when you go to fill it (then you should be able to just call the office to change it vs a second appointment). The doctor may just suggest another medication on the spot, as often there are different options for any condition. Sometimes though, due to your other medications & health issues you might need that exact one.
