You're so lucky Tom to get this experience, I'd only love to live near a port and watch these fantastic machines coming and going. Daniel, Kilkenny

Hi Tom! Wow! It’s really good to have a new ship on the Belfast - Liverpool route. It looks a lot bigger than the Stena Lagan and Mersey! I didn’t even know that this ship was coming into Belfast! Also, the three Viking cruise ships in Belfast are here for a refurbishment and will be staying for a few weeks i think! It’s nice to see some cruise ships in Belfast this year!! Michael from Whiteabbey!!

Hi Michael, Yes the Edda started on the Belfast Liverpool run at the end of March. It is one of the largest and environmentally friendly ferries in use around the whole British Isles. Yes i was delighted to see the Viking cruise ships in harbour. If Belfast does a good job on these it will most certainly result in further refit type orders. Best wishes from the Castlereagh Hills.

Hi Tom I’m so sorry to bother you, but I had two questions to ask you. The first one is: What camera or cameras would you recommend for RU-vid or is an iPhone XR ok? I also have a Fujifilm Finepix XP130 but I don’t know wether I should record with that either. The second question is: How do you do the face cam if you’re recording something on your laptop? One again sorry to bother you! Thanks so much for the link for your video!!!! Best wishes to you too!!!

Hi Michael I am not bothered at all. I recommend a Panasonic HC V260. This is a cheap very light camera that fits into your pocket. It has a great zoom and it has built in stability! . I had a 580 but it stopped working and I bought the 260. I had one previously so I knew it was good. Phones are excellent for filming something close by but few have any zoom capability. ( Maybe thatwill develop in time. ) I know nothing about the Fujifilm camera you mention. I was able to do the face cam with the Panasonic 580 which had 2 cameras. Unfortunately my 580 is broken soi can no longer do it. But these things happen.Best wishes

Nice video Tom. The Stena Edda @ 214 metres is the longest ferry on the Irish sea but by every other measurement eg. Tonnage, Draft, Beam, Lane Metres, Car Spaces & Passengers the two Irish Ferries ships, the Ulysses and WB Yeats are bigger.

Good Morning Tom.Just about to start the day its very windy here but fine,at the moment so it will be some job's in the workshop starting with a leather of on the old car.I agree with you on the covid fiasco I came of shielding about a week ago never went anywhere all through lockdown, sleeping in separate bedrooms and all the rest. Sonow all these restrictions are being lifted I feel more threatened now than when it all kicked of its just crazy.I'M STICKING PUT. Cheers C & A.

It is wise if you are vulnerable at all to take these meassures Chris. We have a lot of new cases here but no hospital entries or deaths. People are wondering when these restrictions will lift. There are so many changes being made/updates/restrictions/new lock downs/new country quarantines. People cannot keep track. Some of the things are illogical. Eg You have to wear a mask going to a restaurant to pick up a take away but you don't need a mask to eat there! Then masks are not required in pubs but they are in our churches where we aren't even allowed to sing! The country needs to get back to some sort of normality and work! We can't keep borrowing billions. All the while our N Ir. health minister seems to be ignoring folks with other life threatening conditions. The weather here has been dreadful over the last week. We have taken a bashing high winds and rain. Oh dear!

That's the Pilot boat Dean. It brings a local pilot out to big cargo vessels. He will pilot or drive that big ship safely into a docking position. He knows all the tides, currents and places in the channel to avoid. Best wishes from Belfast.

Over 8 hours from Belfast to Liverpool in this day and age is a snails pace. I seem to remember the HSS to Scotland was taken out of service because it cost too much and the locals in Holywood didn't like a big waves crashing onto their coastline.
@TomMcClean
@TomMcClean 4 года назад
Yes that is why it was removed CP. The waves made did caused knock on problems. I remember a few wee ones in paddling with parents, unaware of the dangers, were nearly swept away. Then shoreline nesting birds sites were also swept away too. The 'tidal wave,' surge created did have a major impact on the coastal enviroment. Erosion was happening all along that shore. Yes it still is slow and pricey. I think it is 7 rather than 8 hrs though.

@@TomMcClean Hi Tom, the Belfast/Liverpool (Birkenhead) crossing is 8 hours and the Belfast/Cairnryan crossing is 2 hours 15 minutes but the stena voyager (hss) did it in 1 hour 5 minutes
@TomMcClean
@TomMcClean 3 года назад
Wow that is fast. I was on this brilliant boat once or twice. It was superb. I think there were big environment problems with it on the entry to Belfast lough. If it didn't slow way down there was a tidal surge along the coastline. People were soaked on the coastal walks and bird life/nesting was wrecked/disturbed.

Gross tonnage is a volume function, for a ferry the water displacement would be about 1/3 of that. It is probably close to 13,000 tonnes displacement. The Titanic would be nearly four times heavier.

Hi Tom.That's a big vessle and just about under 6,000 tons lighter than the Titanic,your right i think its crime the way all our shipyards have gone when you think back we were building the world's ships at one time.Anyway a little joke for you (with a Chinese theme).Did you here about the Chinese container ship that was carrying a cargo of five million yo yo's and it struck a reef and sank 949 times lol.Hope all is still going well with your hip,and you could do with some decent weather over there as well,I think we are in for a bit of a battering on Friday & Saturday.Best Wishes A&C.
@TomMcClean
@TomMcClean 4 года назад
We were battered last night Chris! We've had a dreadful few days heavy rain. On top of all this depression our proven inept political masters here are trying to lock us down again. While all the while pubs and restaurants are mask free because people are eating and drinking there. The whole thing is illogical in the extreme. Many times more people have died of the flu and pneumonia in the last week but C -19 with 2 deaths and quite a few people testing positive ( becasue more testing is being done now! ) is keeping us all in fear and mask wearing in shops!

Hi Tom , Chinas cheap, I like it , how long will it take to recover £200 million and start making money for the company , although think about it with no planes flying a 7 hour cruise across the Irish Sea would be nice.
@TomMcClean
@TomMcClean 4 года назад
Hi SF, These crossings are pricey especially if you take a car. This ferry will recoup this money from the lorry container trade. they will fill her up for each crossing. But £200million is a lot of money to claw back before you make a profit. If we were run by China or Japan they would have a bridge built years ago between Scotland and N Ireland. We lag so far behind in so many ways and vision is one of them!

What a gray day!!! Yuck! It makes for black moods. Regarding your comments on China... I really don't know what to think of it anymore. I hate it. It's a terrible situation for countries who can produce these goods, but fail to effectively compete. But what can you do when the rich people of the world decide they want to be richer by producing everything at the lowest cost possible by sending their production to a country or countries where workers work for less? Countries who are willing to sacrifice their environments, and treat workers poorly for the sake of profit? Also, consumers, be they individual or corporate, want to pay the cheapest price and get the most for their money. I see it every day. People say they want to buy USA made merchandise. They don't. They vote with their wallet and walk out the door with something made in China, or Mexico, or wherever. Now it's their only option. Sure, better trade deals help the situation, but they are hard fought and have a price like any war. Trump sunk so many farmers with his antics. There are other options besides America for countries to buy their goods from and a lot of business went away and won't come back. That affects MY community. Dairy farmers are lucky if they still own a truck, much less their farms. Corporate farms grow and and small farms are killed and the government just offers loans to farmers, not outlets. That's not positive growth. That's welfare you have to pay back. Or they just outright pay the farmers who complain about any other welfare, but it's fine if they receive it. America has a welfare problem. I don't care who is getting the money. John Deere (our local tractor manufacturer) is more and more headed to Brazil. It all makes my head spin. And since there is little I can do about it, I just prefer not to think about it and instead work on motorcycles and take care of my home. But stupid decisions have consequences, and at the end of the day... It's all about money. Everyone wants to be as cheap as possible and get the most. As you say, end of rant.
@TomMcClean

I agree Greg most people will vote with their wallet. The vast majority do not care where the cheap goods come from, or how they were produced or how the workforce were/are being paid or treated by their managers. Our successive Governments here have allowed a large number of UK companies to up and go to the Far East. This meant thousands of jobs were lost here and also skills. From inventing and then making most of our own goods in the early 1900s UK can't even manufacture PPE equipment for our NHS. It too had to be imported from China! Tanya my wife, bought a t shirt for £9 the other day. There was a rainbow on the front and the slogan 'Support the NHS heroes'. It was made in Turkey! In the 1930s N Ireland had 1000s employed in the shirt making industry. Now it's all gone abroad. Why did out Governments allow this to happen? Answer because their siblings/uncles/fathers etc were directors of these companies that relocated and they and their rich families were set to make a killing by massively increasing profits by relocating to SE Asia! Our Governements say they care about local industry and jobs. The reality is that they only care about what suits themselves. I reckon they are almost all on money under the table backhanders from mutination companies etc to swing votes! If they did care about local jobs etc they would have taken steps to protect our industries here! They didn't! There's my rant over too! lol
