New Storm Responder Generator Stopped Making Power

Found this generator on Facebook Marketplace. It was advertised as a brand new generator with zero hours hours on the engine. According to the seller "The engine runs but the generator does not produce any power". It looks to be in great condition. How bad can it be? Lets find out what's wrong and hopefully fix it.
I use Harbor Freight Super Heavy Duty Degreaser in my ultrasonic cleaner.

Reminds of of the old phrase "For the want of a nail the shoe was lost........." Very easy for a trivial component loss or missing to cascade into complete failure. Glad that you were able to make this a useful generator again. Dave.

I wasn't worried about your ability to literally "repower" this one, Jim. I was expecting spare parts, but reasonably priced new ones are even better. Might have liked to see you load it close to 6500 just to see if that new power head would put it out. Top quality as always and keep em coming!

Lovely job James. The Chinese do not seem to use any sort of standards for color coding cables in manufacture We have ours in Europe and you have yours in North America. They are not the same but widely known. No one knows what the Chinese are doing. Only long experience enables you to know which powerheads, and sometimes other parts, are transferable into defunct machines and which ones will make commercial sense. Investing 300 or 400 dollars into buying new parts shows me that you have a certain confidence in what you do. I am much more reticent.

We have used the ru-vid.comUgkxOTeIs0vv4_9B5hsmnLsk9r930uDQLu_Y for probably 30 hours with our camper and it’s been great! The noise level is really only noticeable when running the AC and other appliances like the microwave, hair dryer, or coffee pot. It’s not huge like other ones and it has wheels so even at 90lbs, I can move it!

I have the older Briggs Storm Responder 5500/8250 watt generator. It has been very reliable and easy starting. I'm surprised Briggs went the way they did with their newer generators today. After seeing how and where they are made today, there is no way I would buy a new one. I also see they went from a poly gas tank to metal. I prefer the poly tank because they don't rust. Sad☹

I don't understand why steel tanks are even used today although they have been a large part of my income as is rich people too lazy to take care of their equipment. Must be nice to throw away a $3k machine after three years because a wire got pulled from the PTO. Cost me $25 to service it and re-pin the connector. Posted it for $1500 and sold it for $1300 the next day.

Nicely done. Also glad to see Briggs finally put a low oil shutoff on those things. Maybe in 20 years we don’t see quite so many blown up engines. Also, whoever picked red for the neutral leg should be… I don’t know. Electrocuted? When it was being shut down each time, it sounded like something might have been rubbing. Kind of a buzzing like the rotor is touching a wire.

Great job on the project, when the video started I was wondering why it wasn't warrantied then later on in the video when you said that someone had been in the unit before I started wondering if it was a case of merchant refunding the money for the unit (or replacing the unit) and left it up to customer disposal of the old unit (Amazon does this sometimes) and the owner was trying to make an extra buck off the bad unit. Keep up the great work.

This would be a good example of putting some hours on the new generator before you really need it and before the warranty expires. Plus it wouldn't hurt to pull the cover on the power head (if you're comfortable doing so)and check if wiring looks to be in place and secured. Which I need to do myself.

My HF Predator genie has a required once every 90 day test to maintain the warranty. Periodically testing something you need in an emergency is always a good idea. Had mine since 2016 but seeing this video I'll pull the end cap off mine to verify.
@GaryToland
@GaryToland Год назад
@tomschmidt381 If you have had it for a while and use it frequently, I would say that you are in good shape. However, the newly purchased generators it wouldn't be a bad idea to do. Have 3 older generators with zero issues other than the need for regular maintenance, but purchased 2 new generators this year one of which(Wgen6000) was only run for 10 minutes just to verify it ran, but haven't put a load on it. And the other (Igen4500) I ran for 20-30 and with a light load to verify it worked properly. Between the both of them, I spent $1200 on sale and still a lot of money to throw away if something like this were to happen.

Mounted all on to a movers dolly, with breakers, fuse and disconnects.... $650 total. Later If needed, every single piece is replaceable locally today. I just wanted a "semi" movable, clean and dependable alternate power system. And I really couldn't afford one any other way...This turned out far better then i expected...

I had exactly the same scenario purchasing a Predator 8750 that was only a year old, but I got lucky! Seller wanted 200, offered 100 and he took it. It was a quality control issue as well where the brushes were not aligned with the slip rings. Awesome job James! Good restraint not buying this generator at the original sell point. 20hrs is nothing, and thats a great deal on a Ryobi power head, it looks better built with resin and the string ties. Double check the brush head alignment to make sure the brush heads are directly over the slip rings. With a non OEM part number if one of the brush heads is ever so slightly off the slip ring it could cause issues later. Other than that amazing job restoring this machine back to working order!
@sebastiannielsen
@sebastiannielsen Год назад
Note however he used the brush that shipped with the rotor, so technically he used "OEM parts". (Ergo, the brush that was right for that stator and rotor). So no alignment should be neccessary. Note however that the incompatible parts here is the AVR, which was "stolen" from the broken power head, and the motor whose governor isn't compatible with this power head. Thats why the AVR had to be adjusted so it fits in-between the motor and power head. Basically, motor RPM directly affects line frequency, so first you adjust the motor RPM until line fequency is good. BUT motor RPM will also affect voltage, and different power heads produces different "base voltages" to so say, why the AVR had to be adjusted to be compatible with the "new" power head that isn't for that motor. Basically, everything except the motor, the AVR, the panel, frame, and fuel tank, was replaced. The rotor, stator, brushes, and terminal block was replaced.
@worthcounty4317
@worthcounty4317 Год назад
@@sebastiannielsen The misalignment in the brushes would come from the end frame (original equipment) and the rotor (non oem). Adjusting the AVR is required due to a different size power head. The speed of the engine only affects the cycles (hz) in this setup. In a brushless then it's another story.
@Bassguitarist1985
@Bassguitarist1985 Год назад
@@worthcounty4317 exactly! Many times it's not just the end bell frame that can cause misalignment it can also be affected by poor manufacturing quality where the slippering assembly is pressed too far inward or not pressed far enough causing an alignment issue. James ran into this I believe earlier this year on another generator. Either way James is a smart guy he will definitely check on these things and may not show it on camera because it is difficult to film every little detail. Cheers!

Breaks and Scrap-Em.......... According to someone else. Fine work as always.....glad that said generator can go back into service. Since I work with electronics, I KNOW about the horrid cascade of failure down the chain when one of the components fails.... That's my fear when trying to bring stuff like this back to life.

Man! That genny came with the extra crispy recipe. 🤣🤣🤣 Very happy that you were able to get it all together and working at a good price. It's really unfortunate that QC was so bad. B&S is just not the same.

It's funny you say that its as bad as you have seen, because, when you took the cap off my first thought was yikes, i don't think i have seen one this bad as long as i have been watching.

It is great to see things being saved, rather than just throwing it away. But the hours you put in to these, it can't be cost effective as a business!

I would be better off with a paying customer. Even then, hard to make a living at this.

James, you need to use grease gun to pop the stator make a bolt with a grease fitting. Or fill the stator with up with grease and use the bolt
