Mario 64 was one of the earliest times we got hatless Mario. You know, not counting Dr. Mario or other side games.

I remember getting to 99 Lives, I was so confused where his hat went. I was pretty stupid and thought maybe I used the propeller mushroom too much and it got stuck in the helmet.

It's the same in NSMB2 (New super Mario Bros. 2 for the 3ds), but you need 1000 ("👑👑👑") lives to make him lose his hat. This also works for Luigi.

The best way to get a bunch of 1ups is by beating the bullet bill mini game while there are a ton of bullet bills on screen. The more bullet bills are on screen, the more 1ups you'll get. The max is 99 1ups.

I when I first found this out when I was younger I was like omg and desiccated my hours to get all 99 lives for Luigi and the toads. Not only I was disappointed but felt proud of my self to reach such a goal😌

in most Mario games, doesn’t losing your hat mean you’re in a weakened state so having 99 lives gives Mario confidence

In Super Mario 3D Land, big Mario had his hat, but he loses his hat when he turns into small Mario. If you collect 9990 lives so that your life counter shows 4 crowns, big Mario will lose his hat, while small Mario will regain it.

I think it’s because Mario 64 that this Easter egg even exists, Mario’s hat had some protection for Mario making him take less damage than without the hat, and it’s the reason why no one else does it

i think i figured it out, in super mario 64, that annoying bird can take off mario's hat, making him take more damage than usual. his hat has a protection of some sorts, when you collect 99 lives in nsmbw, youre already powerful enough, so mario doesnt have to have it out for extra protection (this doesnt effect gameplay though)

I always made sure I had 99 lives lol, got me so much gamer clout being able to tell my buds that my Mario had no hat

Every time I play NSMBW, Mario is pretty much capless for most of the game as I find myself with 99 lives about halfway through World 2. 😁😁😁

That happened to me in Super Mario 3D Land too! I had a save with a Mario with no hat and I was cautious to not take damage or get any power up, otherwise Mario would put the hat again.

To be fair if it applied to the propeller suit, it would just give him the power of a weird jumpsuit and nothing else

I also like how it happens in the other 3 nsmb games after wii and 3d land, although you have to have 1110 lives

This always reminded me of a „gimmick“ in sm64ds and maybe the original but i dont know, where when losing your cap you take double or just more damage and usually the cap power up boxes drop charged bob ombs instead of the respective cap/power flower so basically nintendo wants mario to have bad luck, because of the bob ombs dropping and die faster because of the damage increase

I’ve had Mario’s hat off for a long time now(yes i grind and am now trying to get all the star coins in world nine) I also have 99 lives for all my other characters.

This also happens in super Mario 3D land with Mario and Luigi

in mario 64, u could lose ur hat on specific levels(a level with a volcano in basement, big snowman level in the mirror rom), and u MUSTVE got it back unless u wanna continue with lowered defense(u get more dmg if the cap is missin, for some reason). like, yea, its possible to complete the whole game without mario's cap, but that just would be harder and clearly doesnt make sense to do such a thing.

I feel like it makes sense for his character aswell cause im smb64 he takes more dmg without his hat so when he has max lives he feels confident enough to take it off since he takes more dmg

You can also get marios hat off in mario 64 If you go to the area with the big snowman and climb him, get to his face, he will blow you off and marios hat will fall off. Edit: also if you get the star with marios hat off, he will jump out of the painting with his hat off, and you can play as mario with no hat

Fun fact: in one of the desert levels in Super Mario Bros WII you can get infinite lives
