Actually, those are the clouds near the horizon, you can see above the water whenever your under water. However this would not work in real life, cause of refraction.

Miss the Grass Overworld one near Peach's Castle with Mario's Hills and the Pyramid as the Desert one, now its just a overworld a desert based on an cake from New Super Mario Bros U, funny enough.
