My CJ2A is mostly stock with the following modifications: 12V conversion, steering modification from the firewall out (custom steering shaft, ujoints, tie rods, drag link, etc., with power steering box, which I run in manual), 4 wheel GM disc brakes with late model CJ rotors and Wilwood dual reservoir master cylinder, full floating rear axle (Dana 44 axles shafts) with Warn locking hubs all around, Dana 44 mini-spool in the rear differential, Lock-Right automatic locker in the front axle, and 4" of lift for the larger tires. The remainder of the jeep is stock: original 60 hp flathead 4 cylinder L134 ci, 1 bbl carburetor, T90 3-speed transmission, Dana/Spicer 18 transfer case, Dana 25 front axle, and a Dana 41 rear axle.

Lower gears would help, but not sure about the strength of the axles with the intense leverage of those 34inch tires, years ago i had a 1977 chevy 1 ton van with a pathfinder 4x4 conversion and after lifting it about 8 inches, i was able to fit these exact size tires on it, they give incredible traction were you need it and people can hear you coming a 1/4mile away, but driving them on the street wore them down in no time especialy when i drove fast and was hard on the brakes, but it was worth it, i even drove it to montana from california and back by way of washington state, i miss those days, but i digress.......................

The D41 carrier required some minor machining to accept the D44 mini spool, at least the 30 spline shaft version did. The journals of each spool (where they fit into the carrier) were a few thousandths of an inch too large. I was under the impression that D41and D44 spiders gears were identical, and maybe they are for the 10 spline axles, but not the 30 spline version. The 30 spline axle diameter is a little larger than the 10 spline version also so I had to drill the carrier larger where the axle goes thru. All in all, I really like the full floating rear axle. I used the D44 30/27 spline version and they seem to be stronger than the original 2 piece D41 axles, but I've never broke either type, so I can't say for sure.

Just curious - after a few years using these tires if you’ve had any issues popping beads on the narrow rims? From the swamper website they say you need a 7” wide wheel. I really like the look and idea about the tall skinned tires! I’m on the lookout for some 16”x5.5” KH wheels from a Willy’s truck - obviously still way skinnier than the manufacture recommends

@tecovas3998
@tecovas3998 7 лет назад
Only had 10 psi in the tires. This was the first offroad excursion for them, as well as the first 10 miles. They are incredibly stiff tires and the Willys doesn't weigh much at all, so no bulge in the tires with low psi. In fact, I removed the schrader valve completely, 0 psi, and they just barely sag. Check out how they did on the Rubicon ( ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-_YxMRj_1H4g.html ). I ran 10 psi on that trail also. They are starting to break in a little now and I just tried them with 6 psi and had good results. Still not much bulge, however.

Do you feel a loss of power after running those big tires..???
@tecovas3998
@tecovas3998 5 лет назад
I don’t really notice a loss of power with these tires. Most of my driving is slow offroad stuff. I do very little on pavement driving. My little Willys can only run about 50 mph and the biggest issue is my T90c transmission. That’s why I put the overdrive on it. I really do like this size of tire for my jeep. Wish they were a little softer tho.

@tecovas3998
@tecovas3998 5 лет назад
If you are going to do much driving on highway, I wouldn’t go bigger than 32”. Most of my Willys buddies run the original tires which are 28” or 29” and they do just fine offroad.

I have the very similar 34x9.50-15 on custom built 5.5" wide beadlocks on a Cherokee. They're phenominal! Broke 'em in @ 7 psi (I'm about 3400lbs) and now run 'em @ 10-12psi. If I'm in extreme off camber stuff (Rimrock, Wa.!!!) I'll leave 'em @ 14 because they can & do fold over somewhat under a high lateral load. Hope to get a 31" set of TSL' for my '49 CJ3A. Until I read your mods I didn't know a D44 mini spool would fit in a D41. Any strength issues with the two piece shafts? Anyway, you keep postin', I'll keep watchin'!! Happy Trails.

@tecovas3998
@tecovas3998 4 года назад
Steers easy with the Swampers. No problems with these tires. It’s the same steering setup I was using with 33x12.50’s and those weren’t that bad either. In nosedown off-cambers, big rocks, engaged lockers, etc., anything short of power steering is “challenging” 😉.
