Certain therapies, such as CAR-T cells targeting B cells, have proven effective when treating cancer, and they have the potential to transform the treatment of autoimmune and rheumatic diseases. However, all current treatments impair immune function by killing off both disease-causing and normal B cells. Rheumatologist Maximilian F. Konig, MD discusses his latest work developing a precision cellular immunotherapy approach to treat antiphospholipid syndrome while preserving beneficial B cells that protect from infection. He will present this work, a close collaboration between rheumatology and oncology at the Johns Hopkins Ludwig Center, at the American College of Rheumatology 2022 annual conference.
