That’s the wonderful thing about HF radios. The features. Like the filters and how they work. I have a ICOM IC-718 on a 5/8 GainMaster. 40 watts on am swinging 80 and 100 watts ssb swinging 145 to 150. And loving it! That Kenwood of yours is sweet. 👍🏻👍🏻
HF rigs are THE way to go!!!! Great sound, usually 100w barefoot, used ones can be had for a good price, reliable etc. Ft990 here with a maco 5/8 for 11m and just pure awesomeness!!!!
being the antenna builder you are .. you should build and end fed half wave dipole for 80 through 10 meters so you can have a multi band antenna for your new hf rig .. of course use a tuner as well to help clean up the swr .. these dipoles can be strung up in many different configurations and are very effective .. thanks for the great videos !! 73
kenwood hf rigs are great i got my dads kenwood ts-570d and just hooked to a 102 whip on a mag mount sitting on top of my truck with the coax ran through the house window i can make some good contacts with it and when the band is dead i can go to 80 meters and listen to the older guys talk on their witch is sometimes entertaining to say the least
i have had so so many HF rigs in the past 20 years , im only recently back on the airwaves . i will hopefully have the kenwood TS-50 and matching ATU in a few days 👌😃
Awesome "John" That's what radio is all about! Connecting with old friends on the air and from off the air! Awesome (qso). Also that TS50 is a keeper. "John" very rare. Iv seen them for $8-$900 if you can even find them. God bless , enjoy talk to you on the air waves. NY157. Bronx county. N.Y.✊✊
Awesome HF radio. I have been a CB'er for decades. Just got my HAM license last December!! Get yours!!!! Just be carful on You Tub running power on 11 meters once you you get your HAM license, you wouldn't want to loose it... Best Regards to you and yours. K8JCW said that...
Great small if right from the mid 90's. Other good ones from the same mid 90's were the Alinco dx70t/th, Icom ic706 model's and Yaesu ft-100/d. Some of these have hf, vhf, and uhf. And they are all mode. The ts-50s was my favorite watch out for leaky caps in it. Hope you get your ham ticket soon as you seem to enjoy experimenting. Great way to learn and very rewarding hobby.
Very Nice Radio John. I will be listening for you as usual. That radio has a nice mellow sound and steady power. A friend only ran a TS-50 on a beam and that was probably one of the best radios on the air back then. Good luck and let the Amp do the heavy lifting. 73s to You and Yours Ghost Radio Northern Adirondack Mtns. NY-202. Great Show as always.
Awsome purchase, John. That sneaky lil TS-50S can still easily keep up with these modern day Radios that got all the Bells and Whistles builtin. This li TRX has all it takes to have fun on the Airwaves incl. some muscles (100W)
@@MowerJunkie I really had a lot CB Radios as well a HF TRX. What I like about the TS-50S is its size, the simple menu handling and the solid state of art. And of course back in 1993 it was the Store Price of nearly 2000.-$ that made this TRX attractive for many HAM's and even no HAM's to buy.
Thats awesome 151 I just talked to you this morning it sounded GREAT, I have a video coming out shortly showing my set up. Take care 73s 309 Central Iowa
Awesome! TS-50 and the Alinco DX-70 were good competition for their day. I have the DX-70. These have everything minus the waterfall of my Icom 7300 and great features for the size ! 73 WWS/WR/IS 1200 SC with a Lowcountry wave 👋
That is the ideal radio for SSB, and with the bands about to open up. As the bands open you will likely find folks from all over the world on anywhere from 20 megs up. New Zealand uses the "0" starting at 26, 330 up along with the UK 40 FM channels all the way up to 27,991 for 40.. I love talking to cabs in Italy around 24 megs, so you can have a lot of fun listening and trying to get a reply from those you will be hearing. HF international airplanes will also be there to hear. Just a ton of fun if you are interested?
I had the TS-50 a while back (First HF Mobile!). The only thing I disliked about it was the weight of the radio which decided me to sell it and purchase the Yaesu 857d (Great compact radio!). I must state the Kenwood TS-50 is a fantastic Good quality transceiver, I'm quite certain you'll enjoy every moment operating with it. Best 73, Karl.
it really is a heavy radio, luckily I won't be moving it around. So far it's the best radio I've ever owned! Take care Karl. Thanks for watching, 73's from 151 SC.
Double-check the Radio Shack tester. I believe it is for 11 meters (CB frequencies) and not all bands after your license. I could be wrong. Anyway, although I never used the TS-50, I do hear good things about them and think you will enjoy it.
Hey mower junkie so carolina rolling into Wis as we speak made a contact with your " neighbor" 127 John still didn't hear you in there Nice looking ts50 hope you have fun sound beautiful recieve Stay healthy, wealthy, wise 73 398wis
Copy that, 127 is always on the radio. I haven't had a chance to get to My radio much today, But I will be soon. Thanks for watching, 73's from 151 SC.
I really like old Kenwood radios. That TS-50 is going to serve you well! If there is anything I can do to help you with getting your ham license, just say the word.
Thanks Rob. I think this old Kenwood is going to open up a whole new world for Me. I found a website called Hamstudy.org. I took a practice test, and found out I need to do a little studying. I was close....But not close enough! I also found out that the test can now be done online, and that's great for a hermit like Me. Take care, 73
Hey Mower Junkie got a question which way is the director on your Co phased ground plane the sides or along the center mast also what do you use to bring both coaxes into one!
The signal radiates perpendicular to the boom. I used a standard 75 ohm co-phase harness, like they use on the big trucks, and a barrel connector to connect it to my 50 ohm coax.
@@MowerJunkie Thanks for the Info and great radio by the way i have a FT101 Yaesu i would love to get going but it has issues my main system is a second gen RCI 2950 and a rebuilt by me original Super Penetrator with a silver eagle 200 that does maybe 125 on a good day LOL 73s from 498 west central georgia
Nice radio 151 when you collect radios you never stop too many out there thats nice thats me any way you have a good one up hillbilly in the bam waving
Hello 151-SC and congrats on your new TS-50 rig, you can be sure it will be your main radio. I am curious if you got audio reports locally on the "AM" mode and if so what was the verdict, SSB will always sound great on that rig. So I guess you are very satisficed with your dual ground-plane antenna. You should consider (if you have time) putting together a instruction manual with the specs, parts list etc for that antenna, you will probably get a lot of request. Finally good idea that you don't overdrive your amp, 5-8 watts with the swing will do the trick or else those finals will smoke, costly. 73 my friend, 770-RI.
Yup! This old Kenwood loves being hooked up to My Co-phased ground planes. I haven't tried it on AM, But I have had great reports on LSB, USB and FM. The previous owner warned Me that it is a weak on AM. Good thing I only talk on SSB. Take care 770 RI. Thanks for watching, 73's from 151 SC.
Okay. Just so you know. Every S unit on a signal strength meter is not a DB rating directly. So, it’s 3DB difference between S1 and S2, there is 3DB difference between S2 and S3, and so on, when the needle is at nightnine, this is not 9DB.. A S9 signal, equates to 50 µV. Or should be if the meter is calibrated correctly.. And nice to see you’ve got a Amata rig. Finally…
@@MowerJunkie watched all your videos man.. Nice work on the relocate to South Carolina to. Sounds like a much better lifestyle indeed.. Anyhow. Greetings from the land down under.
I’m sure the noise filters will help you pick out those weak signals. Lots of buttons and do dads. Yeah Hf radios are a bit of challenge to learn to use. Good luck with it I am sure you’ll do fine. So I have to ask.... Are you going to get your ticket someday? You would enjoy it. And you have almost all the gear already. Great videos as always my friend. 73
Hi guy can you tell me how to unlock the TS-50 for 11 meters mine stops transmitting at 27 megahertz I've had this radio in the closet for a while .but if you can tell me how you unlocked it I'd be greatful

Does the radio have vox? Then you dont even haftar key up!!!! I use a yaesu ft990 and an icon ic735.....the yaesu's audio sounds smooth as a tube radio
@@MowerJunkie I checked online and apparently you'd need an external unit for it anyways. Anyhoo, thanks for the vids. I'm in northern ontario chinada.....ahem....Canada. when are you usually on the air? I'll try to get ya sometime!!!!
4.000 Mhz down to 3.600 Mhz That's 75 meter I said down almost every night front of my Yaesu FT-747GX Skip is run in from everywhere it's crazy because at 11 meter Is nice and quiet Have fun my Big Brother 73 from 671 The Queen City of Buffalo N.Y
Thanks for the info Luis. This radio is making Me study for the Ham licence, I just need to study for a while. Take care Little Brother, 73's from 151 SC.
No problem my Big Brother 151 from South Carolina a been studying have been failing my English doesn't not help me I will keep trying 73 from your little brother 671
Well 151 you like at HF radio lot better than a CB and let the filters in them but the audio is not as good power-wise is a CB on modulation it's clear but it don't have the the punch alright 73
Don't let the kenwood TS-50 over take CB radio sets got a keep old CB radios going I have Icom 7300 it very nice set to operate I don't operate it on CB bands am old school still using CB radios. When am using Icom I don't have the CB feelings it not for me lol
I will always have My Washington CB as My primary radio. This Kenwood is nice, But the Washington will always be My favorite. Thanks for watching, 73's from 151 SC.
You sold Your stuff to soon, CB radio has made a huge comeback! I can find people on my radio any time of the day. Thanks for watching, 73's from 151 SC.
You should not be putting that much power through the back of the Amp even though it's off, Texas Star can handle 100watt pass through, but most Amps are much less
@@MowerJunkie well thanks mower for that. On a ts 50 , you can see the power of your transmit on the bars exaggerating on the display. But your tx didnt. So why, thats all.
*... YOU KNOW ... YOUR "DISPLAY SHOWS 30.0KHz" IS 30 KHz LONG WAY UNDER 300 KHz* *..IS GOOD ..SO LOW* IS DOWN IN "VLF" .. (THE STRANGE WORLD) .. EVEN U-BOAT RX/TX ARE THERE.
