1964.......#14 U.S. Billboard Hot 100, #6 UK Charts
Spectral stereo remix by MixerRog
"Tobacco Road" is a blues song written and first recorded by John D. Loudermilk in December 1959 and released in 1960. This song became a hit for The Nashville Teens in 1964 and has since become a standard across several musical genres.
The English group The Nashville Teens' garage rock/blues rock rendering was a bold effort featuring prominent piano, electric guitar, and bass drum parts and a dual lead vocal. Mickie Most produced it with the same tough-edged-pop feel that he brought to The Animals' hits. "Tobacco Road" was a trans-Atlantic pop hit in 1964, reaching number 6 on the UK singles chart and number 14 on the U.S. singles chart. While the Teens would have some further success in the UK, in the U.S. "Tobacco Road" became another one-hit wonder of the British Invasion.
Jefferson Airplane recorded a version of "Tobacco Road" on their first album, Jefferson Airplane Takes Off, in 1966. It was one of only two songs on their first album not written by a member of the band. Takes Off is the only album they recorded with their original lead singer Signe Anderson.
British psychedelic band Spooky Tooth recorded a version in 1968 for their debut album, It's All About.

Everybody's version of this song is good for its own reason. Eric Burdon & WAR's was done in their own style which was great. The Blues Magoos did a version that was more busy in the guitar department at this tempo which works also. I'm a big fan of David Lee Roth's work so I like his version. The Lou Rawls version is so subtle. But I have to say this is the best version of this song. It hits juuuust hard enough and has juuuuust enough fuzz to make it a masterpiece.

@@SpeegBJ Thank you. My recently deceased father raised me with his Music of his young days in the 50's up to the 70's. And as he continued to explore those golden days of human creation we travelled back in Music to turn of the century (19th->20th). Naturally also to classic Music. It had been a beautiful magical tour. Even though we were always alert and true about what was going on in this world.

Money and big business took over music like it takes over everything. No matter what year it is, they will always mass produce shitty products with less effort than they spend the day before. Our society isn't built to make great art, or even make a great society. Our society is built to make a lot of money. Accept that reality, and everything else makes sense. Yes, it's bad now. But it gets worse every day.

@smurfstoolsoldiesmusictimemach Was this taken from a stereo master, or was this made with AI separation of the instruments? I'm kind of amazed at what the AI techniques can do with old mono songs. This sounds like a stereo master... though many from the UK saw no release as stereo at the time. The UK was a little behind the US in stereo production... the first Beatles album was not even made to be heard in stereo, and the only reason we have stereo versions, was because they were using standard 2 and 3 track multi-track machines to be able to mix and effect recordings after the fact. In fact the VJ STEREO pressing I had of Introducing the Beatles, only has about 20 vetted original copies known to exist... just curious about the source. Some layer songs like Whiter Shade of Pale, were recorded simply in mono, SO AI would be the only solution there.

wow, from reading the comments no one is even aware of the original version of this song by john d. loudermilk. there's only two definitive versions. the afore mentioned original and this cover by the nashville teens. i've seen about 30 reaction videos to the winter bros live version. johnny winter is an excellent guitarist, one of my favs, but that version isn't very good. i see this all the time. reactors picking the wrong versions of songs to react to. its aggravating. i recommend reactors to combine the two versions of "tobacco road" i mentioned into one video and compare the versions. they're both good and both quite different. but no one listens to me. go figure.
