Impossible to deny. Based on the audio here on RU-vid, even through strong quality cans, ToneCity appear to have created near perfect clones across the board...Yes - impressed. As Josh Scott says - you can't patent a circuit. Really compelling, thought-provoking vid here.

The tone city pedals all literally sounded exactly like what their “copying”. Further proving that pedals are electronic circuits and not “magic”.
@KeithMilner
@KeithMilner 2 года назад
@Cameron Clark People like to imagine there's some sort of magic involved with this stuff, which there isn't. The same is true of hifi. There are all sorts of myths around about why this or that version of a particular component is better, and that mythology is often based around "and they don't make it any more" to make it not just magical, but rare and magical. As you say, Physics and Electronics doesn't work like that. There are some good reasons to spend more on certain old versions of analogue pedals, but tone is usually not that reason.
@drdre4397
@drdre4397 2 года назад
@Cameron Clark Josh from JHS has said that even though circuits can all the same, pedal to pedal can vary in terms of where the knobs are. He said with absolute confidence that 3 morning glories all made back to back set to 12 would all sound different. Again nothing to do with the fact you can copy circuits ( I.E Beringher) and re-create the sound, just found it to be a cool peice of info.

All the Tone City pedals were pretty much spot on with the sound they were trying to emulate. I personally think it’s a great thing making great sound and tone accessible to everyone including beginners with no or little budget and the experienced guitarist alike.

One of the best things I bought from Anderton's is the ODR1. Really good recommendation. I use the gain on 9>12, spectrum on 3 and stack with another low drive pedal or boost

Honestly, all of them, with the exception of the Muff/Moof were all incredibly close sounding, and in a couple cases, I actually preferred the Tone City ones because I thought they actually had a bit more clarity without sacrificing any of the tone, dynamics, gain structure or feel. I'm wearing pretty good headphones and I thought the Nobles/Nobleman, Morning Glory/Blues Man and the Rattler/Mickey were so close that I think all it required was a bit of very fine tuning to get them to sound virtually identical. The only noticeable difference I heard was between the Big Muff and the Moof (I know it's called the Matcha Cream, I'm just being silly here in honour of Rob lol). But when the Moof was compared with the Russian Pickle, it was very close, and again, I think all it required was some fine tweaking to get them to be on par with each other. As someone mentioned already, it seems the Moof is much more of a Russian Muff clone than an American Muff clone, and at that, it does a good job. Well done, Tone City! I honestly think this video just saved me some money, because I'll probably get a Nobleman instead of a Nobles ODR-1 now, as well as the Blues Man and maybe even a Mickey just for poos and chortles. As a side note though: it doesn't matter where the knobs are positioned from one pedal to the next. No matter what pedal it is - whether comparing different brands or even identical pedal models - the differences in the taper of the pots alone makes a huge difference in where the tones will be similar, or the same when comparing pedals. Not to mention minor capacitor and other part tolerances can make slight differences as well. To me, what I do is take the original, find a tone (or two) I like and then match that with the clone pedal. More often than not you can get startlingly close, or even to where you can't hear a difference in tone or feel whatsoever. After that is achieved, wherever the tone controls on the clone pedal are set is completely irrelevant. I think people get WAY too hung up on that. They'll set all the controls at 12 o'clock on each pedal, hear that there are differences and then assume the clone "isn't the same" or "is no good", simply because the tolerances and taper of the pots are different from pedal to pedal. Get your tone with the original and then set the controls on the clone to wherever they need to be. Once they sound virtually the same, knob position is completely irrelevant.

The Muff was closer to a "Green Russian" style Muff. More mids and low end and just a little less shrill. It sounds really close to that style.
@quoimagueule628

it is very good these small inexpensive pedals their sound is very good .. but the dynamics and feel of the game is not at all the same when compared to a high-end pedal. the components are often 1st price components (capacitor, resistor, etc.) which completely removes the heat and dynamics that we get with high end pedals but unfortunately these are things that we do not hear on youtube.

I literally closed my eyes at certain points to see if I could distinguish the difference. Even with high quality headphones I could not truly pinpoint the moment they switched. I deliberately looked away through much of the video and (once Lee had matched the levels) mostly couldn't tell when he'd switched pedals. Scary and exciting at the same time! I've wanted to try a Morning Glory and an ODR1 for a while, and this could be the perfect way to get "close enough" without breaking the bank. If either work the way I hope, I'll probably buy the real thing further down the line.

The only one there was some difference was on the first one, there was a tad more bass on jhs which makes sense because it's not a straight blues breaker clone, it has a jfet output boost -> less gain needed in earlier gain stages for output volume-> less opamp compression -> more bass.

My take on the Muff situation is that the EHX to me sounds more like the Ram's Head which is lower gain than the Russian, which is what I think Tone City seems to be doing well: a bit more gain and more push in the lower mid and mid. However, that does just end up providing a bigger bottom (Stop it, Chappers!). I think the other magic of the Russian Muff is the way it pushes the amp. To my ears, it somehow translates into some clarity that I like. Maybe it is driving the low mid/mid in a way that leaves some transients up top. What do I knoww though. LOL. Now, all those older ones sounded different from one another - like most vintage era pedals. Also, beyond the huge sludge offered is that Gilmourish (Ah, Bjorn. . .) lead sound. . . but I am pretty sure Pete Cornish has probably tweaked those pedals that David G. owns. I do think the Tone City is very close to my reissue EFX Russian Muff. I think those 3 are better than a lot of the big box versions that are post 70's.

Sound wise they are all spot on, but there is more to consider when looking at pedals - jack placement, power input placement, on/off light, even the feel of the switch. As someone who plays live often these factors are important. For example I have a small mod pedal that has chorus flanger phaser etc, the knob to change effects is too close to the switch so it’s easy to move by accident when turning it on an off. That being said these pedals sound great. Could probably tape down the knob in the middle although that’s also the indicator light

Lee, that thinline tele is spectaculair! These pedals rock! Especially at those prices. I particularly liked the Nobleman, so I need to look into that one. I own a Cuvave Fuzz (€23,-), which is comparable to the matcha green fuzz. I also own a Dalamo Fuzz (€18,-), which is a distortion up to 12 o'clock, and turns fuzzy beyond that. I own a Saphue Vintage OD (€24,-), which is like the Blues Braker. But had I not owned these pedals I'd get these, especially in a deal with 2+ a power supply. I'd get the Nobleman & the Bluesman, so I could stack them like a King of Tone, for £80...!!!

Does the Nobleman's tone knob do the same thing as the ODR-1's spectrum control, ie a double filter, sweeping down the low mids and highs below 12 O'clock (leaving a mid bump) and elevating them above 12 O'clock (leaving a scoop)? Or is it just a normal treble/bright control?

I have to say that these Tone City pedals are really appealing for a lot of reasons. Of course the price is fabulous and that makes them super accessible even to someone who isn’t able to or doesn’t want to spend a ton on pedals. But I really like the relative simplicity of each one, the size, and the lighted knob. I mean come on they are just cool and inexpensive. What’s not to like? I especially like that Bluesman but I’ve watched a lot of the other videos you’ve done with many of their pedals and the Angel Wing and Sweet Cream are the other two that always catch my attention.

The Tone City stuff is pretty solid. Only difference I think is the ranges in the knobs, they don’t do that much. Rather than a range of say 1-100 it is more like 30-70. It’s in the more usable ranges but the sweep just isn’t as large

I think their stuff is perfect for an effect you don’t really use, but occasionally need. I don’t like chorus so the Angel Wing is perfect for me. Sounds good, there if I need it

This mini pedal madness is awesome. I use these pedals more than my keeley BD2, keeley 808 and Royal Flush. Mooer Blues Crab (must have) is 99% Marshall Blues breaker pedal also, even cheaper! There is a RU-vid video with a dude tripping out at how Blues Crab sounds the same side by side with original blues breaker. Tone City and Mooer are f'ing awesome.

I own a rat, ODR-1 and a Mooer Blues crab and holy cow… these tonecity pedals sound so damn close and at times audibly better than the expensive counterparts.

That Blues Man pedal sounds literally identical to the Morning Glory lol. Just ordered one!
@quoimagueule628
@quoimagueule628 2 года назад
yes it sounds almost the same but it does not have the same dynamics or warmth at all as morning glory. electronic components (capacitor, resistor, etc.) are often inexpensive entry-level. so yes it will sound the same but to play it will not be pretty at all. you have to try to understand it

We're going to need a premium gear Vs high standard Vs budget level with a guitar, couple of pedals and amp comparison. Another law of diminishing returns video or is it about the special way it makes you feel over the tone you produce?

Mickey and Matcha Cream (when pitted against the WH) were the closest to my ears. I didn't think the Blues Man sounded identical to the JHS MG, but regardless, it might become my favourite pedal. Bought it two months ago and it's been an "always on" pedal for me since (I just like the way it breaks up, and the way its EQ'd, I can get anything from soulful 60s / 70s tones to black metal with it :-).

I've been very satisfied with my Golden Plexi. Mickey's going into my shopping cart.

I'd like to rock that guitar even though I've never played one with a cut away like that and I'm more of a strat guy, I think that be a pretty punk rocking guitar even though I know alot of people would be chicken picking on it. That tone rob had on the into was pretty punky bruiser....

They should've called the Matcha Cream Muff thing "Math" and just had a massive Pi symbol on it

Don't know if it was said yet, and I loved the video, but the TC "Muff" is probably supposed to be a "clone" of the EHX green Russian muff. The tone of the TC Muff sounded like how a Green Russian muff sounds. Less gain, more bottom end stuff like that

Watched Lee's very entertaining knob-fumbling, then closed my eyes for the switching, on every pedal. Eyes closed, I couldn't discern any difference in any of the matched pedals. Good on Tone City!
