I don't even think it's just the fact that he buffed it that makes it as bad to play as it is. I'd argue it's more the way he buffed it. As Aeon said, the base gameplay of this level seems pretty good, and a level being top 1~3 doesn't automatically make it terrible to play, though adding huge fixed hitboxes as your primary way of making the level harder is just not a good idea at all. It's really not that much effort to link all of the structures you might want to move and just move the whole structure instead of adding invisible spikes onto them (I've done this a LOT, and yeah it's a bit annoying, though it's definitely worth it). This level also just seems to have a very large number of bugs such as [very?] major skips, parts of moving structures that don't have the moving group, etc..

The thing is, people are free to play a nerfed and enjoyable version of it like Doggie did with slaughterhouse. If you aren't a stargrinder, there's nothing special about a level being rated besides pointercrate prestige. If someone chooses to pursue fame and prestige over their own enjoyment, it's stupid to be complaining about enjoyment.

I think the big difference is that bloodbath is still playable. It was at a point in the community’s life where, were you ambitious enough, anyone could say “im gonna make a level harder than everything else” and actually be able to do that; thats exactly what riot did and it paid off. Reminder that prior to this, cataclysm was the first big demon that pretty much everyone unanimously agreed was the hardest level. Bloodbath was more than just “the top 1 hardest demon for 9 months”, it was a landmark achievement, something that left big impressions on the community. Please excuse the cringe comparison but in a way it was like the moon landing, with everybody, regardless of what brought you into the game, coming together to watch somebody do something unseen before Nowadays, the standards for what “the hardest level” looks like have changed drastically. I think the demon lists creation had a lot to do with the rush to make the next big thing. Thats not to say that the demon list itself is all bad, but i think people really wanna capture that same bloodbath feeling- for the whole community to unanimously look upon their works in amazement and unanimously say “yep this one is the hardest”. Its funny, you look back at the top 1 contenders after bloodbath and for a while it was pretty much only one “hardest demon” a year _sometimes_ (yata got nerfed, sonic wave has its own funky history, sakupen hell was debated a ton, erebus no one liked etc.) having two levels competing for top one at the same time was even less likely. But now there’ve been upwards of like 3 or 4 top 1 in the process of being built, decorated, and verified all at the same time. And they’re not all bad either, ascension to heaven is exactly what GD needs imo, but its clear so many extreme demons aren’t being made for the same reasons they used to be a few years back

I don’t doubt that these levels prioritized difficulty over fun, and of course some of these developed a reputation of being unfun, but a hard level is naturally gonna be unfun to those who cant beat it. However, I can be certain of the fact that none of these levels were made with the intent to top an arbitrary list of difficultly. Realistically, all of this is purely based off impressions- ill never beat zodiac, or the golden or whatever else. But there can’t not be something telling about the fact that slaughter house, acheron, and now avernus have all released within the same 1 year window. Thats unprecedented

Yeah. Seeing how "few" attempts top players like Zoink spend beating Top 1 levels, it wouldn't really seem as insane as before for them to beat something like Exasperation.

The fact that zoink beat this in 30K attempts and no one else has made any significant progress on this level is kinda suspicious to me. I wouldn't be surprised if zoink was exposed in the near future.
