Hello: Great video. Around the 27:00 mark when you switch machines, instead of saying you could move the stone to the first machine to keep the same angle, you could just move the support bar to the second machine, and you would also be at the same angle. Nice job overall... lot of good tips in this video!

It looks easy by an experienced user BUT there is a definite learning curve involved that can be frustrating. Start with cheap, disposable knives until you become familiar with the machine. Takes time.

Thank you for your video. I just bought a Tormek T-8 (aniversary edt.) and have been watching a lot of videos on sharpening woodturning gouges. I just wanted to ask why you don’t use the jig on the leather wheel, like I was taught when sharpening woodturning gouges? :)

@@woodsmansfinest3814 Thank you. My "problem" is that with the new Tormek T-8 Anniversary edt. comes the CW-220 Composite Honing Wheel. This is some kind of a rubber compound that I think removes burr more aggressively than the leather wheel. I have never tried honing on a leather wheel, was just wondering if I as beginner would maybe be in danger of ruining something by not using the jig on a leather wheel or my new artificial compound wheel... I will probably stick to using the jig on both sides while getting the feel for the Tormek. Thanks again for your video and thank you for your prompt reply :)

Hello Max, I am a new user of SVM-45 and I noticed that while I lift the knife handle (in order to grind the tip of the blade) the micro-adjustment knob in the handle is not locked and is not holding the original setting. It screws right or left since I hold it tight while movin it along the supporting rod and lifting the knife handle. Did you notice that also? is it the same with the new jig?

Piece of advise from former professional sharpener : I would not advise using this method for sharpening other than cheap basic scandinavian ground knives. The hollow it creates will weaken an already weak by design edge. This won't be too much of an issue if you carve soft wood, but it will show on hard woods like beech. Even-though I own a T8 with a larger stone (250mm radius), I prefer to sharpen my true scandis by hand on whetstones. Now for a general purpose Mora Basic or even Companion, that's OK, but I wouldn't do it for more high value knives.
@woodsmansfinest3814
@woodsmansfinest3814 Год назад
I and most professional carvers will disagree. My bearing steal knives carve dry apple without edge damage and are ground to zero on the T4.

@@woodsmansfinest3814 Just carved one of mine and it was surprisingly easy. Feels a lot better to use now, more like my other Scandinavian style knives. One thing is it's not as secure in the plastic sheath. I do like the plastic for when I'm not wearing a belt but still want a knife on my hip. I think it'll still be ok.
