Dear Kayla, I’m so glad you were able to come up with this idea of toy rotation. I’m a preschool teacher and love your blogs so much. Something I put on practice in the classroom and in my ow house with my toddler is to have less toys and make sure the ones I have have a learning purpose. With my 2.5 I realized that the less toys he has available for him, the more time he spends playing with them. It also helps them come up with other ideas on how to play with those toys. For example, use them in other ways. I think your kids will love this less amount of toys and of course you too! 💕

I have found that putting out toys that focus on a specific skill and just one on each cubicle works great! The kids focus more on the toy and they know exactly where to put it away :) you know when you open the fridge and don’t know what to eat and the fridge is full? LOL that’s how kids feel with too many toys ☺️

This is how we set up our toy rotations a year ago. It's worked GREAT for us. We also do 4 divisions, and a little of every category in each division. And it makes having him clean up his own toys at the end of the day much more manageable, and every Monday it's a new rotation and he gets so excited about it every time. Rotation also allows me to wipe everything down and track down any misplaced pieces every week, so the toys stay in good condition and we aren't missing half the pieces for 6 months. It's also incredibly cool to see how differently he plays with his toys after a month without it, because the way he thinks and approaches things can change so much in that amount of time, and I would completely miss that if he had access to them all all of the time. A suggestion for you is every 3 or 4 months pull them all out and mix up which toys get grouped together so it stays extra exciting for them. They get toys together they haven't had together, and it makes it feel even more new. Right now he has 1 rotation where everything is themed for farm stuff. It wasn't intentional to get a lot of farm themed toys over the last 2 years - it just happened. About 2 months ago I was mixing the rotations up, realized how many farm things we had, and put all of then into the same rotation. He's gone through that group twice now, and it's currently his favorite one. The others don't have specific themes because there's not enough of another theme to fill out a rotation, but it's been really cool to observe the differences between how he plays with the non themed rotation verses the themed one. We even rotate the books because we have so many (big book family) and the farm rotation even has farm themed books. And we also have the toys that stay out all the time, and a couple special toys. Those end up being for waiting rooms for dr appointments and stuff for us. It looks like your doing a great job! Just keep tweaking the system when you see a need to to keep it working for your family!

If a strict weekly rotation doesn't work, you can also try the approach of removing toys as you notice them not reaching for something anymore, and replacing it with a different item from the stash. If Riley is into her Peppa Pigs for weeks at a time, totally fine to just leave them out and only switch out the ones she stops reaching for. Many ways to try toy rotation!

I found including my kiddos in the donation process helpful... Some things I wouldn't even present to them, but things I was unsure of I'd include them in and I've been surprised sometimes, the things I thought they'd want or be attached to they couldn't care less and were more than willing to pass on... And they learn to be generous.. not to say it never fails but it's worth a shot now and then.

I do a toy rotation and use the same bins you have. I’m on the minimal side of toys but we definitely have more than a true minimalist, I also did go a little crazy for my daughters third birthday. I have the same cubed shelves in the kids room and one downstairs. Whatever doesn’t fit in there goes in the closet. I try to rotate the toys every couple weeks and take toys away they don’t play with, then when they’re brought out again they get played with a lot. You should at least keep all the nice wood toys if you think you might have a third, otherwise they might sell for good money, especially since you’re a RU-vid star, you could put them up for sale! I keep our lovevry blocks out all the time

Everyone has there own ways of decuttering and organizing as well. I just throw away my kids toys or donate them because the mess is overwhelming. So I just leave one or two items for my kiddos and a few in their bedrooms and thats it. But, all powers to you for changing toys, organizing and etc. It's still a lot of toys to me but your kids are so lucky to have you as their mommy. 😁 Love watching your videos .

Before having my second child I had no idea toy rotation even existed- I was so in the dark about everything with my first child! Lmao. But it’s brilliant and works great now that she’s old enough to care. My daughter just has a small cute play corner in our living room with just maybe 10 different toys of various kinds and that’s all she’s ever going to have at one time because I’m not trying to clean up a sh*t ton of toys off the floor everyday. No thanks lol

I remeber that stage .. all the toys . Lol . My oldest are almost 8 and 6 they dont really play with toys anymore. Thank the heavens . And my 2 youngest i have a bin each and if it doesnt fit in the bin or if the bin is full and we wanna buy something else then we have to donate something . Except like my 2 yr olds bouncy horse or my daughters walker . But other than that if it fits it sits in the bin . If not bye bye 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Do you have a toy library in your area? I pay a yearly membership (115 Australian dollars from memory) and can borrow toys (indoor and outdoor stuff) every week if I want. It’s good because I’m not acquiring too much.

When Your kids are very good behaviour all the time and always taking good care of their things, keeping their rooms very clean, loving their favorite things and want to make nice childhood collections of their things: books, clothes, toys, video games, clothes, DVDs and etc, then donataing is very wrong thing to do. If You have few space then storage boxes and shelves will help You out and Your kids will be very happy and thankful then, if they can keep their favourite things. Childhood things are very valuable and it is very sad, if they won’t see them anymore in their life. Every child should have the right to keep their things, if they can take good care of them all the time!!!
