Who cares if the ford puma is slightly better to drive? This Yaris will still be running when the ford had been recycled.

Toyota ECVT is a massive plus! Not a negative by any means. If you like to floor it regularly this is not the car for you. You buy a hybrid like this as it’s more efficient and reliable than its rivals. If you want to go fast and accelerate hard (which is inefficient) there are much better options.

I would happily buy one for its brand reliability and petrol consumption alone. Having owned 3 Yarises I am leaning towards a Cross for my next car. It seems that for 99% of car reviewers are obsessed with so called 'scratchy' plastics which I find laughable to be honest. I cannot recall the last time in my 50 years of driving that I sat in a car scratching the plastic trim. Why even would you? I'm 5'10" and have no trouble fitting in the rear seat of my Yaris and have ample leg room. Out of 100 cars you pass on the road how many of those have two 6 footers in the rear seat? Nice car.

well, if it's not right in the rear seat it won't be a Yaris, right? the very first Yaris was small on the inside but at the same time not overly cramped, it was like the Japanese modern Mini and it was brilliant. the only complaint that I had with that car is that the tiny 1.0 was very underpowered.

Why do car journalists always complain about the CVT? I drive a Toyota with CVT myself. It is a very economical transmission. Why rev the car to get a quick acceleration? CVT cars are built to be economical. We should get rid of the idea that quick is better, more fuelefficient is better. acceleration is an item from the past. Car journalists shouldn't be concerned about it at all. Most cars get from 0-60 in say 6-12 seconds. So why bother? And why do you need a bigger fueltank with such god mpg figures? Love the car and the colour by the way.

Bert, am I reading too much into your surname? Do you live in the flat lowlands? All I'm saying is that in my part of the world cvt gearboxes are inept, inefficient and extremely tiresome due to their noisy lacklustre performance, yes it's hilly around here.

@@waynesimpson2074 Best thing would be to test drive in your area and see for yourself, if not good then buy what's right for you. @@waynesimpson2074 With the Yaris MK3 hybrid I would agree, it's only good for city driving. But poor on long journeys as not powerful enough which makes too much noise on the CVT. Bought the Hybrid AWD in Australia 2 months ago. In my 70s. It's safe, perfect hip hight, room for grandchildren, radar saves my knees in city traffic. Very economical on short trips and 360 overhead view is great for tight parking. It fits where Puma won't. Love the feel on open roads, but that's not where the savings are. Reviewers are always negative about the CVT gearbox on Toyota's. I've owned a CVT for 18 months, and not once has the engine over-revved and made a racket, if you floor the accelerator, then maybe it does, but then a hybrid is not for you if you regularly do that. I've owned a DSG and a CVT, and in my experience the CVT is miles better.

I have a manual licence, but have driven autos since the '70s. My present car id a Subaru XV with a CVT box. I've been driving it for 3 years now, and I can't tell a lot of difference between that and a torque converter gearbox, TBH. It has stepped changes to simulate a TC box, plus it has flappy paddles. There are so many VW Audi group cars which I like, but they all have DSG gearboxes which I've read can be hesitant in certain circumstances, and I can't take that chance, as my wife would freak when she drove it!!

I got my Yaris Cross two months ago, and I am a happy camper 🙂 - in my country we do not have the English levels, mine is called a "style" and has a medium package with panorama roof and tech package, and no AWD - I dont need that - but I do have a removable trailer hook, for bike transport, a small trailer and maybe a camplet for camping in the future. I think it has plentifull oompf, you can set the car in eco (green) normal or red mode, and in red mode it reacts quite potently. Longer hauls are not as economical as short drives, but it handles well, especially the driving assistance and adaptive cruise control works as a charm, and makes driving easy and stressless. The automatic highbeams (not the fully automatic highbeam), works much better that on the old Yaris, maybe because it's a higher SUV car? What I like the most is the height of the drivers seat, plus the CVT its so easy and comfortable!

Does the panorama roof causes more external noise to enter in the cabin than the one with metallic roof ? Wind noise driving high way ? Had you tested drive both versions ? With panorama roof and w/o panorama roof ? Thnx

Just bought one which be delivered in June - could'nt get the 4x4 as that would take too long Nov/Dec. Once I understood how the CVT worked it was no problem - presumably if you need a burst of speed you just have to suffer the noise. Economy is great and the 10 year or 100,000 warranty, found the car comfortable to drive felt much higher up - my existing Yaris is ten years old with well over 100,000 on the clock and has cost me virtually nothing in repairs so they threatened to send out a man to set fire to it ! If it fails its MOT in May they will give me a free car until the new one comes - no one beats their customer service.

Plusses for me are the fuel efficiency (obvs), reliability, small footprint for handy parking and huge boot capacity compared to my current Mini. Seems like a great car, especially a second car. Great for zipping around in the city, single people or couples. Considering they typically are in Honda’s and Toyota’s that last 200-250k miles and are mostly very reliable, I do not understand this contempt for CVT’s. I guess it’s like the people in America who hate the sound of diesel engines. The gas mileage, it’s a hybrid and it’s mostly under 25k are all reasons to love this car.
@toyotaprius79
@toyotaprius79 2 года назад
Most folks wouldn't know how to drive these hybrids properly. You can actually make more progress and a better driving experience from gradually pressing the throttle (which feels like a big torquey engine at half throttle) rather than impatiently mashing it to the floor giving off a disconnected "CVT feel". There are ECUs /computers that have to juggle driver input with road conditions and a myriad of drivetrain output combinations.

Moving from 17 to 18 inch wheels, (Design to Excel), adds 10g/km to the emissions. There is some extra weight too, of course, but it does suggest the engine is only just powerful enough. Maybe they will introduce the 1.8 at a later date. A real shame that they do not have the nicer digital display on the base Icon version, while not being able to add the extra safety pack, with rear cross traffic alert, on Icon and Design specifications, seems wrong. Personally, I prefer the beeps and digital display, from front and rear sensors, rather than a reversing camera - the camera, in my opinion at least, is something that should be added after parking sensors. The black roof lining, of possibly the most popular trim, Design, is not suitable in a small car - it just makes a plain car look dull. Excel trim is really nice - shame you can't have the smaller 17 inch wheels and gain the lost CO2 back, but big wheels sell, of course. A solar panel might be a nice green option on a vehicle like this. Agree with an earlier comment, that as 2030 approaches, we will see less fuel stations, unless they re-invent their businesses to cover charging, which they could do on larger sites and in areas where there are many terraced houses and flats.

Seats on the GR Sport too firm for me, the Excell/Design (not sure which one it was) were more compliant. Glove box is tiny, rear legroom is indeed snug, and the acute angle of rear doors makes access snug. But I still like the car, oddly enough I think the rear looks better than the front 😂 (not keen on the Kia type grille). The double bubble dashboard/combing is a big ugly/old school. There is a new 2024 version being released in the far east, with improvements to the styling.

Having city pack with sensors linked to auto braking is fantastic and cvt seamless changing between ev and engine mode saves thinking about gear changing etc. I promise anyone choosing the Cross that they will be totally satisfied. The clincher for us, being in our 60s, was the 10 year 100,000 warranty provided you have servicing done at a Toyota dealership. 3 year Monthly service packages are available at a fixed price and can be repeated every 3 years at renegotiated prices. We have a Rav4 hybrid and you really notice the elastic band effect of the cvt. The sound deadening is good though. It doesn’t corner very well as there is no lift off engine braking so it tries to go straight on. If you are going downhill be ready with the brakes ! For relaxed driving it is fine.

Great review, but the CVT in Toyota Hybrids isn’t a REAL CVT. It’s actually referred to as an e-CVT - it seems to mimic a traditional CVT gearbox but it’s a totally different type of technology (Planetary Gear Set). My 15 year old Prius e-CVT has worked flawlessly without missing a beat. Accelerating in a hybrid is more reminiscent of setting an aircraft’s turbofans to full thrust - you’ll get the same howl you’d get on an airliner streaking down the runway for a take off. Reach the speed you want, and the hybrid drops power to cruising mode - even better if there’s cruise control available. Good mpg indeed. I drove an Aygo X a few months ago - managed 64mpg without even trying - I was just keeping up with the traffic on the North Circular A406.

i think its all wheel drive not 4 wheel drive, i just found that out is this the same cvt as in the Yaris and is it that bad. i have a polo 2017 and was going to stick with polo as there the only ones that still do manual in Australia. i really don't want auto but may not have a choice. especially if i want hybrid

But the boot on the puma isn't that big! Litres are all a lie! When will the auto industry learn! What are the actual dimensions of the boots that will give a true reflection, who would actually use a boot based on litres! Now give me a job! 👍🏻

I have tested this car too. The most complete version. The weakest point is the engine. Starting 60 km/h and higher it makes noise during the acceleration. It must be a stronger engine for this car weight. 3-cilinders engine is to small

To mpg measuring. How many miles have you driven in 100mpg test? I am quite familiar with hybrids and MPG heavily depends if you start with full battery and stop measuring on low baterry... We have Toyota CH-R in family and i agree, that it is noisy in higher RPM (car screams and nothing is happening like you had neutral gear...) and when driving uphill has heavy issues to reach higher speed. It has for sure its own customers. There are speed limitations and nobody needs to be formula 1 driver. When i tried long distance tours (it is our family car) it reached 5,2 L/100 km - 58 MPG (in summer), because had to recharge few times on trip. I dont understand why are people take as advantige plug-in hybrid against hybrid. You can recharge plug-in hybrid by driving style too AND you can charge it at home with photovoltaic power station... Maybe people are lazy and it takes then too much effford to plug it in...

Interested in this for commuting and pulling my ultra light micro caravan. Plusses for me are the fuel efficiency (obvs), reliability, small footprint for handy parking and huge boot capacity compared to my current Mini. Not loving the looks inside or out though - much prefer the curvier profile of the C-HR and the Juke but with a heavy heart I'm probably going to have to make a sensible decision than one based on fun.

Delivery I was quoted for these cars is November 2022 which is 6 months away ! I was told that my part exchange would go down in price and the new car might go up in price . Some dealers are also holding on to their demonstrators as well, and won't release them until September 1st when the 72 plate cars come out. Looks like they won't be getting my new car order.

How is the electrical power supply element included within the overall mpg? What assumptions are used in terms of how the electricity is generated and supplied to the vehicle and how its then used in its hybrid configuration?

They are made to work together. Using this as electric doesn’t make sense.
@andi-ih3jj
@andi-ih3jj 2 года назад
It does not have to be included at all because you cannot charge this vehicle. The charging of the battery is mainly done by braking or regeneration from rolling or going downhill. If this is not enough the combustion motor will charge the battery but the fuel used to do this is in the 63mpg included
@csjrogerson2377
@csjrogerson2377 2 года назад
@@andi-ih3jj Thanks I missed that point. I could foresee a scenario where after a motorway journey, where there is very little braking, that you arrive home with battery that's not full. As it cannot be charged you'd need to get into town traffic to regenerate or you're back on fuel again.
@andi-ih3jj
@andi-ih3jj 2 года назад
@@csjrogerson2377 The state of charge is of no importance in a Toyota hybrid. The batterie will never be discharged under 30% or filled up to more than 80%. The graphics on the in car display do not show this, when they show "empty" there are still 30% charge left. You can see this with a OBD Tool. So when you arrive at home with a empty batterie there is still enough juice to get going, the only thing that happens is the combustion engine will be started very soon after you drive off and recharge the traction batterie (the big one, every hybrid and EV has also a small 12V battery to run the lights, radio, fans etc. as these are 12V not 230V or more) and since even the traction batterie in a Hybrid is very small compared to the batterie in a EV this only takes 2-3 minutes. Engine does not charge the traction batterie fully as there than would be no chance to charge it with recuperation or braking.
