Randomization is something I never understood why more companies don't implement. I had a VST years ago called Gladiator that could generate random patches and I could spend hours messing with that randomize button. Its a good way to drop you off into territory you would never venture to yourself and you get some really interesting things.
My TR has been sitting on the sidelines for a while as I've been learning new gear. I came back to it this week, and to my delight we have me FM synths and probability amongst other things. I forgot how much I enjoyed it and now it's even better.
Roland, you have female vocal samples in this machine saying "Ooh Baby" (unusable) but you still don't put in your own famous CR78 drum machine. (Heart of Glass, in the Air Tonight, Enola Gay, I Can't Go for That, Man on the Corner, etc etc...). People have been clamoring for CR78 in this machine for many years, but you ignore it in this "Important" update?
Thanks Starsky, I’ve been using the TR-8S on and off for a year or so but this update takes it to the next level. Although there are some melodic presets, I love using this exactly as it was meant to be - a centrepiece for drums. A “drum machine” if you will. Hadn’t really taken a close look at the editor until you showed it in this vid, a game changer! Thanks dude 👍👍👍😃😃
Yeah its great. The 8s is an excellent live tool - but that doesn't mean you have to restrict yourself to the menu system when setting up your playlist or creating your kits! It just makes accessing everything so much easier
Roland has a bad habit of making weird menu dives. The original out of the box had very little of it. Seemed cured. But with unlisted button combos.. I like the other stuff but I definitely will not remember those combos.
Thanks Starsky for another great vid. This is utterly brilliant! At the risk of sounding greedy... V2.5 really makes it sound like they might do a V3.0 right? The next thing on my wish list now for TR8s is the ability to plug in a keyboard and play melodic lines in using keys. Yes - you can tune the sounds manually to different pitches but despite giving it a decent go - I'm too slow for improvising live. If you could quickly record these brilliant FM bass and lead sounds into the pattern using an external midi keyboard - for example a little boutique keyboard. Someone said that it records cc changes to do the pitching but it is not beyond the skill of the roland nerds to come code. You can do that on the Twisted Electrons Blastbeats. Also on the list for V3.0 would be microtimings + randomisation or cycling between fills please (eg - press manual trigger of fill and it plays a different one each time. Credit to Roland for not abandoning this beast.
Wait, you can't already do what you described (plugging in an external MIDI keyboard and using it to sequence melodies)? That seems like a massive oversight to me, especially considering how many features it already has. Hmmm.
i think it's bizzare that Roland give their new smaller miniature line generic USB drivers, but i STILL can't connect my TR8s to my iPad, WTF? I do like the new FM tones and probability %
I just bought this a week ago, and already an update, woohoo! I'm usually not a fan of Roland's "ACB" stuff, but I must admit that they pretty much nailed it this time. Close enough for my needs anyway. Thanks for sharing.
The TR sounds are fantastic.. and you've much more control than samples. Imagine a world before these... :) £3k for a 909 £4k for an 808 The TR-8 was a revelation.
@@StarskyCarr Yeah. Truth is, the RD-8 and RD-9 from Behringer sound even closer to a real 808 and 909, but the reality is that in a mix no one can tell which is which. And the TR8S takes up much less space than two of these side-by-side and also has a lot more control.
@@AlainHubert the only behringer that sounds closer to the original is the vc340 versus the VP-O3. vp-03 sounds a bit off. other than that, the ACB products are all perfect to my ears.
@@djangofett4879 A lot of other ACB products from Roland sound "a bit off" as you say, compared to the originals. But some of them are good enough for some people. Besides, not everyone can afford the real deal anyway.
One day Roland will update the TR8s so much I'll have to pop the question - will it marry me? **dreamy sigh** (wakes up looking at the QuasiMidi Raveolution and the divorce papers from 1996)
@@StarskyCarr You still gave us a good look and listen at the new update. So nice job. I was on the verge of buying a TR-8S when I 1st posted, I wanted to see EVERYTHING! But I've since bought one. Now I'm able to watch your video again and just enjoy it :)
I hope this has the randomization part in it (jk) The fw makes me want to buy one, but I already have 2 capable samplers and enough sequencers. GAS does not equal better, I will do with what I have but can see the newer update and absolute blessing for some. FM sounds excellent. probability and sub is my fav. I did ask on last vid, can you do prob on FX per step?
Anyone noticing any bugs since the upgrade? I keep getting disappearing tracks, tracks suddenly go silent and need to be re set. I dunno I'm always near comatose when I use mine at night so it could be me😂 update Is fire though, the shaping you can do with the new FM models is crazy, new FX are really good too. Great video cheers.
loving the tr-8s so far but really hope i didnt have to switch audio driver to tr8s to record invidiual tracks out into daw, gotta keep switcihing settings in utility also. bummer.
After nearly 20 years of no new hardware, I bought an Elecktron Digitakt and Digitone in 2020. They are lovely... but generally never grabbed me as "dedicated" drum machine material (and I've owned/loved many by Roland in the past). This video could be the push I need to buy this baby... It looks and sounds intuitive, PLAYABLE, and FUN! Thank you, kindly. 😁
Thx nice .. Waiting for a Proper tutorial for this though.. Question : is the new fm sounds put together as a kit or should you find them one by one .. ??
@@cristobalgomez5434 Yes, Thats possible I use the external in for my Bass station II and Td-3 and I often send reverb or delay to both devices even the master FX affect the external in's. If you push [Shift] + Kit you get to the EXT IN setting.
I can't see the value at all in this unit. These sounds are commonly found in DAWS and plugins and the sound quality itself isn't any better. That's a lot of cash for a toy to play with.
It’s because the videos are longer and more detailed. They’re auto placed by RU-vid and I even strip some out. There’s no more than others. Less per minute viewing. Under 30 secs per hour.. but hey ho… it’s all free. I earn less than 50% minimum wage on these so if you can’t even support that well…. Goodbye.
I can´t believe it it yet has the same screen as in my Boss- SE 50 and 70, what a toy this Aira but sounds as a toy. If you want a real sampler, get the last one Roland did, S-770 that is a serious machine!
S770 nice kit but tr8s wouldn't really be my go to sampler. It's better as a drum machine. Eq and comp really bring it out. Roland have produced many toys since 1990 but I'd say this is their best drum machine in modern times.
