This 2012 Subaru WRX STi has been through a bit of a rollercoaster on our dyno, putting on this new BorgWarner SX-E 7163 turbine compressor cover and testing the improvements it yields over the standard cover. This updated cold side cover boasts an anti-surge housing and improved aerodynamic design to maximize the potential of this powerful 7163 turbocharger.

I have always said this small inlet turbos are restricting turbos. To move air in, the front of the turbo is at (almost) perfect vacuum. So with the same delta in pressure (atm vs vacuum). The bigger inlet will flow more, more HP. If I go with an EFR stock location I will put some massive spacer under the tgvs to get a bigger inlet.

Yeah, every improvement in flow capability will always show an increase in power-- period..

Don't run a stock location turbo if you want lots of power, period. The 90* bend in the turbo inlet hurts flow a lot and the exhaust housing is more restrictive which increases back pressure. The turbo is also sucking in less dense air at the inlet, so it needs a greater VOLUME of air (larger diameter tubing) at the inlet than the denser air at the compressor outlet (smaller diameter tubing), since you are moving the same amount of MASS of air, with less VOLUME now. This is why most common big turbo kits use a 4" inlet and 2.5" intercooler piping.

What's that chu chu noise under load? Is it compressor surge? How much lag would an efr7670 add?

I believe you are hearing the external wastegate, boxer engines tend make that chugging wastegate noise at WOT with their unequal length exhaust manifold. A 7670 is gonna be a pretty laggy setup, but when it hits...

Have you tested running the EFR turbos completely without a BOV/RCV? would be interesting to see if the compressor wheel and shaft can withstand it.

@@HeidiFegles nope, was a bad headgasket sent to me by a vendor. I replaced with oem and never had an issue after that even running 30psi boost. Sold the car a couple weeks ago.

@@whiteSTi12 are you on stock head studs still or arp? And that’s crazy the gasket was imperfect, I wonder how often that is the case and we blame it on other stuff thinking that’s the problem.

@@HeidiFegles I was running ARP 625+ headstuds. The gasket was bent during shipping and I called the vendor to ask if it was OK and they said it was fine to use.

The tune before and after was about the same and it's been a couple years since tuning it and the car is still running just fine... And sold as noted. The owner realized that making power with a Subaru was expensive and on a time table.

@@yamahaSHO well 2 years and still running. Must be a good tune I’d say. 30 psi if the load isn’t dialed on the timing table then that motor will blow in half. Ya I know from experience haha. I built a motor did my best on it at age 22 and I’m 35 now, but I flashed my timing curve in and forgot to rescale the load and we’ll. 30 psi 38degrees advance. And well you can imagine the giant puff of steam and the rod sticking out of the hood after that lol.

Yes, this is a FlexFuel setup and the ethanol content was around 81%, IIRC.

There is a guy on NASIOC who is going to try this with a 6758 (not sure exactly what cover you need). I am. Also curious in the results.

Yeah, with that smaller 6758, we'd say it would even further decrease spool time, and beef up the mid-range power curve, possibly the whole curve. We can order you the right cover if interested, please reach out if you want to pick one up and try for yourself.
