Odenplan transport terminal in Vasastaden in Stockholm CBD, has undergone considerable redevelopment, as part of Swedish Department of Transport's (Trafikverket) project called Citybanan Project. The project involved construction of 6 kilometer commuter train tunnel under Stockholm CBD with two brand new commuter train stations, at a cost of SEK 18 billion (about $2 billion). The tunnel was officially opened for commuter train service on July 9, 2017.
One of the new stations, namely Stockholm Odenplan, is located in Odenplan, 30 meters below an existing metro station. Because of the new commuter train station, the Citybanan project triggered substantial redevelopment of Odenplan transport terminal that hitherto consisted of a metro station and bus station. The redevelopment included: renovation of the metro station building to accommodate expected passenger flows to the new commuter train station, renovation of the square on which the metro station building is located, as well as introduction and spatial re-organisation of bus stops.
The improvement of Odenplan transport terminal, and particularly the expanded modal split resulting from the new station, are very likely to lead to significant impacts on the surrounding area, also called Odenplan. More specifically, the new station and subsequent physical improvement of Odenplan are very likely to result in increased business potential in the area, hence making it a hot spot for those interested in making investments in Stockholm. Accordingly, we envisage redeveloped Odenplan to attract investments in high profile restaurants, pubs, night clubs, shops, offices, and even housing. Such investments could be in the form of new ventures, as well as expansion and sophistication of exiting businesses. Redeveloped Odenplan is also very likely to lead to increased land values that will in turn lead to increased returns to property owners.
In terms of urban spatial form, overall impact of the new underground commuter train station in Odenplan, could be dramatic changes in land use, and types and quality of urban solids.
The new commuter station is spatially connected either directly or indirectly to all the entrances to the existing metro station. The station has also a new entrance from Vanadisvägen at the northern part of Odenplan, that makes it close to St. Eriksplan metro station. It is state-of-the-art commuter train station with ample waiting area that is well furnished with seating places, advertising electronic screens, rubbish bins, uniform smooth floors, excellent lightning, etc. Glass and steel walls with sliding glass doors, separate the waiting area from rail tracks and trains. The doors open automatically when a train arrives, and close again when the train departs.
This video presents an observer experience of Stockholm Odenplan commuter train station from Odenplan square or simply Odenplan, through its main entrance at the square to its end towards Vanadisvägen exit/entrance. Emphasis of the video is on the design, and selection and organization of urban space treatment elements.
