Hey you guys really do a great job. Most reviewers don’t follow up on subsequent generations of a product. The Farpoint is one of the few real rivals to the Rick Steves original one bag and the best commercial competitor the Patagonia MLC, so thank you for updating. The most important pack feature to me these days are laptop slots that protect from external impacts but don’t waste space trying to pad against shifting internal contents - I can plan for that in my packing.

@@keagan1276 compete with the Steves? Nothing, for sheer size and low price. It's a loser, though, when it comes to transporting electronic devices, plus it's so large if you pack it full, you'd better be very fit. I think Patagonia's latest MLC is very interesting. Expensive though, so if it doesn't exactly satisfy your use-case, heartbreak follows. On the other hand, if your international flights don't have penurious weight restrictions, and you are willing to sacrifice your underseat legroom for a personal item to hold your electronics, the Steves is the king of one-bags, no-checked luggage, travel.

I bought the first generation Farpoint 40 back in 2012. In my opinion, it has been the best carry-on backpack with top-tier function and style. Glad to see these evolvements all along the way, like the modified back support and moving the laptop compartment from the front to the back. I'm thinking about replacing mine with the newest version but it just doesn't break.

I have the older version the 2nd version. Love it because it’s got that extra compartment thays made for the Laptop and I know many ppl complained about that. I don’t bring laptops or iPads with me when I travel. I just love the extra compartment and the new version doesn’t have that. I thought of upgrading myself. I just got this bag and loving it more and more for each day. I am amazed by how much you can stack on top of eachother and still close the lid. the internal compression straps are amazing for that. They also keep everything from falling out when you open the bag. Its also very comfy for its lightweight construction. Another hack I found with this bag is that you are able to fit a smaller packing cube under the harness, where the harness cover hides away. packing this up with a small cube or a pair of pants fills out the bag even more and makes it more comfy, as it gives a little extra support around the tailbone. The only drawbacks I could think of: 1. Would be nice with a real elastic mesh pockets one one side at least. There is a perfect place for that on one side that is now just empty. 2. Some more organization would be nice, either inside the bag on the side (as earlier versions of the Farpoint had), or a little extra room/organization in the top pocket.

Great video- I’m a huge fan of Osprey packs, and mainly this pack. I have the older version, and may actually like it better than this updated version. I don’t travel with a laptop and really like the front zippered compartment for things like a jacket and rain gear- without having to access the main compartment. I suppose if you travel with a laptop this is probably better. I do like the way the main compartment on the updated version opens all the way, as opposed to the older one that doesn’t quite do that. But props to Osprey for listening to their customers and updating to what they want!!

Thanks for the review. We just tried out a farpoint in REI and didn't like it -- it didn't seem to fit our torsos. We figured this was because they got rid of the small and large versions and went to O/S and we're just a bit too small for that. Not a single one of the like dozen reviews we've watched showed that there was, or how to, adjust the torso size! Your review is the only one that mentioned (and demo'd) it! We also never noticed the little drip hole for the water bottle compartment -- that was another neat tidbit exclusive to your review. Thanks!

Thanks for the great review! Couple questions: (1) Did you have issues keeping the zippered flap that covers the harness securely stored away when carrying it? Saw someone on reddit claim it comes loose. (2) Does the laptop sleeve have any sort of false bottom? It seems like it wouldn't if the laptop is only separated from main compartment by detachable padding?
@songpholaungkapipattanacha649
You for got to mention the clip in harness to attach their day pack. It is new for 40 liter version. I like the update. It look nicer. The location for laptop is good but I doubt the design to have padding with removable toggle. What is the point?

They're very similar. The 55 doesn't have the front stuff pocket and has a few internal organisation pockets. My view is that you're better off getting the 40 and then if you feel you need the extra room you can add a day pack later. But there might be a few features you want on the 50. Personally I don't understand why they didn't just combine them and offer it as a 40+15. There are some decent comparisons on RU-vid showing both

Great review. While I appreciate the fact that the laptop compartment moved to the back I don't like that almost nothing is accessible without opening the main compartment. The previous version had a front compartment for some items. Other brands offer access from the outside and many other small pockets for organization. I suppose they assume one would use one of their daypacks. Those, I think, are interesting, but when travelling by plane it is not always allowed to take two items as carry-on. Plus the rucksack becomes quite bulky when the daypack is attached, which is a downside when being in a packed crowd as it is often the case when travelling.

I can see why Osprey may have used an front pocket for a tablet and laptop in their older design. With the current updated design the more conservative laptop compartment may be resting against the back and is more logical for weight distribution. But the older design allowed to grab a tablet quick in the front or top pocket when lied down flat on its back. The heavier weight far from the back would be odd of course, but the benefit of grabbing a tablet quickly from that front sided pocket and keeping the laptop from being crushed by the large main compartment seemed to have prevalence. Until customers began to complain/comment on that. Still a great update over the old with lots of improvements on the back and shoulder straps. And the shove it pocket seems much more convenient for jackets.

For this bag and the Porter, it helps to have packing strategy where you load and cinch in layers. As many may have noticed, the top of his bag was not packed as dense as the bottom. These bags fail carry-on limits because owners pack it too high which may result in problems getting the bag in the overhead compartments of planes.

Osprey's Farpoint 40 is probably hands down best carry-on bag as i have used it all around the world in the past 3-4 years and it's been amazing. Except one main issue i've had with it which you can see in the beginning of this video. At 0:15 if you look at Eric who is just a bit taller than myself, you notice how high the bag sits and hurts your lower bag imo. Especially when riding in the back of a motorcycle as you do in SE Asia for example. Other than that, this bag is near perfect!

The old farpoint 40 is s/m size too. there is farview too. (created for women). And is made for people who are not tall. I had hard time to found it because is out of stock everywhere. I ordered it 4 days ago, from Estonia, now can't wait to have it. For a smaller backpack i prefer osprey daylite 26+6.

@@markhurlock3891 no. It's not removable but there are two little hooks that can hold it in place to the rest of the backpack. Think of it like a flap that you can hold in place or not. I kept the little hooks secured the whole time. My clothes and stuff went on top.

@@panosgrdev I would say that this should not deter you from buying this great backpacking. I had many clothes in the front compartment and there was a substantial amount of pressure on my laptop. For most airlines, I think the 40L is the largest that will consistently qualify as a carry-on/cabin bag. Domestic US airlines are probably the exception as many of our carriers let people fly with some larger carry-ons.

Does anyone know if this bag classifies as carry on for majority of flights ?
@LKtravels
@LKtravels Год назад
Yes. For European flights, it's a "cabin bag" (vs "personal item"). I've used the older FP 40L as such on Aer Lingus, Ryan Air, and Delta earlier this year. For those regional carriers, you'd probably want to have a ticket that buys you a guaranteed spot in an overhead compartment. For the really strict airlines, you'll want to get out your tape measure.

I never understand why these kinds of bags have a grab handle on the side, and - in this case - the laptop opening on the side as well. Even in an overhead compartment in an airplane, I usually shove my backpack in lengthwise, because otherwise I'm taking up more space than I should. So usually the top will be facing me when I open up the compartment. I think, for me, the REI Trail 40 might be the better way to go. It's lighter as well. Still, this does seem like a nice bag if you want to be able to use it as a quasi suitcase as well. It does have a better laptop compartment than the REI, and I like that you can put something behind there. I'm thinking of documents that you might to keep (relatively) unwrinkled.
