After living with just two 15 square foot vegetable beds for years, my husband said it was okay to make a 200 sq foot “flower” bed on the front lawn. It’s shaped like an irregular oval island to give it more curb appeal and I’ve planted fruit trees and vegetables between the flowers to keep up the curb appeal. Funny enough, most people can’t tell the difference between flowers and vegetable plants anyway.

Our front yard is what's south facing so I've just been slowly taking it over, each year claiming more and more grass. This year my husband has finally become a willing and enthusiastic participant as he can now see that it's way more beneficial than just a pretty grass space.

I am starting my first veg garden in container pots in a victorian terraced house's tiny paved backyard. I grew up with grandparents who had their own allotments and gardens full of fruit and veg and I loved helping on them as a child. For the last 20 years I have lived in flats and I am so excited to start growing my own fruit and veg finally!

Last year I got 3 small pop up raised beds and filled with bagged compost. Spent a fortune. This year I've made some simple no-dig, not-raised beds between my decking using just free cardboard, a 1000L bulk bag of manure and some woodchip between the beds. Cost the same and quadruple the growing area. Think its easy to make that mistake first time round but learned my lesson!

I've just moved into my first house that has a backyard. I used to grow all my veg in pots on my patio. Hubby and me have just cleared all the weeds away and levelled the land to put in vege beds. We've got pallets exactly like what you're using. I've been feeling a little apprehensive about putting the beds down wondering if I'll be any good at vege gardening on a bigger scale like this. I'm excited but a bit nervous too. This video couldn't have come at a better time. What a weird coincidence!

Found your channel today.... And learning so new births that I didn't now.this garden thing is new to me. I'm gonna say now I'm autistic and struggle with understanding and being understood so I apologize now if anything is taken the wrong way,I really don't mean it. I moved to a bungalow last year,have been here 12 months and a week,but have had covid for that week lol Last year we spent alot of time trying to take care of the garden as it was from the previous chap that passed away the winter before, obviously in the 6months noone was here there was noone looking after it so all the bushes,and there's lots down the one side that goes to the road,they had gone made.i still have no idea what they are.but we are leaving them in. As I have a new support dog,well she's 9months old now, Labrador so large dog and don't want her jumping the fences.... As the other side Is about 2 ft lower. Anyways we (me,my mum and support worker Beth) this year have started to grow some bits. Sadly had to take the grape vine out as couldn't care for it it was huge and the dog was eating alot off it. But in its place I'm hoping to put 4 new rhubarb plants,all in pots or large tubs,as I physically can't bend due to my own disabilities too...so everything we are adding is in pots or growbags. I started with strawberry plants last year and 3 types of raspberry all in their own bags. And we did potatoes and carrots last year and I tried spring onion and lettuce. This year I have the strawberry and raspberries and I've added a cherry bush/tree and also have 2 blueberry plants to go in,just needed to get the right soil for them. And we have got some rhubarb as I said.... But one type came as stumps the other is growing. I put the stump things into a pot each that the raspberry came in last year and hoping that will give them a root system before I plant into the large tubs I have for them. We are also trying seeds, parsnips, cauliflower and broccoli, watermelon 🍉 and baby sweet watermelon, tomato 🍅 but have a type called red pear. The garden also has eating and cooking apple trees,been here years aswell as pear trees and what we think are cherry trees,they are big,not like the one I have brought that won't grow bigger then 6ft and is more of a bush. We didn't get anything on them last year as we had lovely blossom on both and then had a bad bad storm and blow the lot off.so never got any fruit.hope we do this year as my new one will take a year or 2 before it fruits. But the hope is as I'm enjoying it I will continue for years to come. Could live here another 60years depending how old I get lol.... But atleast another 30years.

I am just starting to grow for the first time having finally moved in to a rented property that has a garden for the first time. As a result i am using freestanding troughlike planters. This is my first foray as an adult in to growing anything more than a few herbs in pots. I have just found your channel whilst looking up how to sow some of the various seeds that I have purchased and found it to be a treasure trove of great tips. I also discovered your Garden Planner site and have already started to make use of it, adding in some helpful flowers to the plan and pairing crops that I already have that could act as companions. Thus far I will be growing 6 varieties of chillies, some hollow crown parsnips, purple sun carrots, kitana spring onions, 2 tomato varieties (san marzano 2 and costoluto fiorentino), spaghetti squash and a large garlic variety that I forget the name of. Definately subscribing to the site.

We are renters here but I am a gardener. I need to grow things for my mental health. I had a small main garden (5x6) and 6 pots and not much else until 2018. I built up 2 new front gardens, for brassica plants and root veggies. Added a few more pots. I learned how to build a Hugelkultur garden, then built one, and how to Companion plant. In 2020 I planted a raspberry hedge, built a 6'x6' peppers garden. Expanded the main garden to 20'x16'. Last year I built an enormous 11'x4' strawberry garden and added a few oak barrel halfs. This year I am adding a dedicated 6'x6' tomatoe garden and 7'x7' pumpkin and sunflowers garden. If the Gods be willing!

Starting my first garden! Here in Zone 6a in Idaho... Yet it just snowed at least a foot yesterday ❄️😂 so I'm using this extra winter time to finalize the plans. It's all so intimidating 😅

I'm currently looking at properties, and in my neck of the woods little two up two downs have some odd layouts. These can include separate rear gardens away from say a rear courtyard etc. In my mind this lends itself perfectly to a veggie patch. I have found this really helpful as I do like neat layouts and also the raised beds inc the ones on legs would be a great space saving solution too. I will be catching up on all your endeavours in order to better prepare myself. PS I have two dogs that might make my own endeavours challenging.😀

I live in the Arizona desert and haven't had the chance to build any raised beds yet so I have a big container garden going! It's already warming up here so I have some warm weather things already in the soil. Hoping to get some raised beds soon, though, so I can expand my produce garden!

I’m just starting an allotment so these kind of videos are so helpful! I tried square foot gardening in a huge raised bed in my garden last year and didn’t get much luck
@GrowVeg

I'm not a fan of square foot gardening - I think conventional blocks and rows are more realistic.

@@GrowVeg I completely agree. I gave it a go as it seemed great in theory but nothing grew to its full potential and I didn’t have much success. This year I will be planting in traditional rows. Your videos have given me some great tips and I’ve already had much better success with my seedlings 🥳

Great video! I have been gardening for a long time and I just put in my very first no dig bed and am excited to see how it does! I'm going tomorrow to get some of the potting soil for the top like you show to level it off a bit and get it planted I hope tomorrow or Tuesday after work with some Spring things! I think I am going to slowly redo all my garden with beds like this one at a time! :) Fingers crossed!

Coming late to the party. Just found your channel - also very much enjoyed your video on how to grow carrots. We have two raised beds 4' X 8' and I grow potatoes in grow bags. My favorite vegetables to grow, apart from potatoes are leeks and kale. My carrots have never been a great success, but I am hoping for more good fortune this year. My plan is to use about 6 inches of my garden compost as the base, quality potting soil that won't impede the carrots' growth, and a topping of compost. I make a lot of pesto and pizza made with pesto rather than tomatoes, and so my plan is to grow lots of basil. We have about 5 or 6 strawberry plants but we've not had a great deal of fruit from them. Transplanted these into a section of our raised bed and the plants already look very healthy. Not a vegetable, but we have lots of raspberries and last year we planted blueberries and I hope to have some yield from the plants we have. Growing season here, in upstate NY is from about May 30th thru Sept (we can have snow late Oct).
