The latest version of our own DIY mast tangs to attach dyneema shrouds to the mast. Significant changes from version 2 including the materials and way of making them. Thanks for all the help in getting this far! Now made from single pieces of Acetal-C with grooves cut on the router. Shaped to fit the curve of the mast.
We are going to test these by putting up our mizzen mast for an exposed Welsh winter.
Our goals are
- reduced potential points of failure compared to traditional tangs, pins and thimbles.
- a tang that is very Dyneema friendly without sharp bends or edges. We have a diameter 7x the shroud diameter!
- simple for DIY, so replacement tangs can be made anywhere with a router, drill and sander providing you carry some spare Acetal-C rod.
This design will be a huge cost saver if you are renewing the rigging on an older boat when you might otherwise need to replace several of the stainless steel parts of the original tangs even if you are fitting dyneema shrouds. This is experimental prototyping of a design that began on our blog a couple of years ago. We have had loads of help improving the design which is very much appreciated.
If you would like to encourage us then we have memberships or donations on Ko-Fi! at ko-fi.com/sustainablesailing/ Note that we receive 100% of all memberships and donations.
Or visit our shop at sustainablesailing.teemill.com/ for great hoodies, t-shirts and bags.
We are changing all the standing rigging on our 1977 Rival 38 to Dyneema synthetic rigging. That includes all shrouds, stays and even the chainplates for both masts of our ketch rig.
This is the 9th episode in our Dyneema series that will cover all the design choices, the practicalities of a completely DIY re-rig and then how it works out when we go sailing.
Our goal is a rig that is:
- stronger
- lighter
- cheaper
- allows us to sail faster
- lasts longer
- can be DIY maintained even replaced, anywhere in the world
We are refitting a 1977 Rival 38 for a Sustainable Sailing retirement in a few years. Three years ago, when we bought Vida she was in a very tired and damp condition with all original equipment and fittings (much of it not working). We have removed all the gas, diesel and paraffin equipment, and are installing all-electric (motor, cooking etc). Lots more detail on our blog at sustainablesailing.net/

Very nicely done. Like others, I shuddered a bit at your (relative lack of) safety precautions. However, this is a fantastic example of can-do-under-a-boat. Kudos!

We are happy to be counted among those doing boat refits on a small budget.

Glad you rigging mounts worked out. Tricky machining but still got all your fingers and toes! Cheers Warren

Amazing work!! Watching you guys create those beautiful mast tangs really gives an appreciation for the shipwrights that made wood hardware like deadeyes back in the day.

@@SustainableSailing... 360M folk pronounce it my way, very few use the more than 3 different versions I've heard you use today 😄 In spite of language difficulties 😇you have given me yet further ideas for reducing costs... Acetal deadeyes! Thats pronounced ded eyes ;-) Bed time for me, think about the ded eyes 😀😃😃 Cheers...

@pocketcruisersailing did I only use 3 versions? Clearly feeling very restrained 🤣 Today I had an idea for soft shackle pad eyes using the same Acetal rod. Deadeyes are also a great idea, could be cheaper and better than low friction rings.

This would be a good way to make an acetal sheave also.

I agree. If the axle is going to be parallel to the sides (our tangs have to be angled) then I'd make a jig that held the sheave using the axle. Would make it much easier and safer.

Verry well done you guys. The singles look perfect. I would think about the upper doublés. They come out away of the mast quite a. Bit. Can the bolt take that downward force? I would want a steel plate at the outside coming from above so it can't bend you're bolt. Verry nice change to the acetol Keep up the good work. Kind regards machiel

The outer one is for the running backstay. So more lightly loaded in normal use. For the size of the mizzen I think these are generously sized.

Where did you get the chafe protector? Is it necessary, I will use some tufnol, as a gŕoove??

Probably not needed. Provides both chafe and UV protection. Eg jimmygreen.com/anti-chafe-rope-protection/78251-liros-slide-protect-xtr-per-metre
