NEW Viking VARANGIAN Hero Reveal! | For Honor 

Little historical background: The Varangian Guard was a special elite army / bodyguard group of the Byzantine (Eastern Roman, basically greek) Emperor. Vikings would send their sons to the Byzantine court (or go there themselves) so that they earn fame/honour and a lot of money and become seasoned fighters. The Byzantine Emperors liked the Vikings for their courage and skills in combat, so they were willing to pay the Varangians quite well. Which is why the Varangian's armour seems more heavy. The chainmail below the helmet is very Greek in style I think. The shield should be a kite shield if I recall correctly, and the slightly curved axe also existed historically (correct me if I'm wrong) although I don't know if that is what the Varangian Guard commonly used.

Well in Age of Empires the Varangian Guard units can swap between 2h axe and sword/shield, it's likely the case here too. Really cool to see the Varangian Guard in For honor, may have to come back and play some when they are released. The Varangian Guard was the personal bodyguards of the emperors in the Eastern Roman Empire (Constantinople/Known as the Byzantines) starting with Basil. Harald Sigurdsson III of Norway, aka Harald Hardråde ("Hard-ruler") was apparently a member of the Varangian Guard as he built up a reputation to eventually become the King of Norway.

A hybrid? I don't know. They never add new hybrids, so I can't see them changing things up now... In all seriousness, I'll probably come back to the game for my annual 2 months of game play primarily because of this. However, I actually don't have much interest in playing them. Based on what we know so far, I wanted more of a grappler type.
