Omega's Planet Ocean is something of a staple of the brand's line-up, and it feels like it's been around for ever-but that's not that case. The year before it appeared on the wrist of James Bond in 2006's Casino Royale was the year it first appeared at all, and that realisation comes of something as a surprise. So how is it that the Planet Ocean has made us feel like it belongs so well in Omega's line-up despite its relatively young age? We explore the history of the model to discover where the story began.

I still think that the Planet Ocean with the 2500 co-axial caliber is the best version of all the Planet Oceans ever made, it's a modern classic! I just can't stand the thickness of the new models.

Purchased my original Model with 2500 caliber in 2008, brand new for $$2,300. It’s a keeper! Sent it off for its first authorized service last month (8/2019) because I dropped it. Looking forward to getting it back looking & performing like new in a couple of months. This is the James Bond “Casino Royale” model

The PO 2500 is of the best bang for buck luxury watches going for under $3000 used. I have the XL with the orange numerals and prefer the blue rubber strap with orange stitching over the bracelet which I also own. Grab one while you can.

I bought my Casino Royale PO back in 2007. It has been on my wrist nearly every day since. For my model, I'd like to see an improvement to the rubber strap, the keepers always break and the strap eventually does the same. A ceramic bezel insert would be nice too! Keep up the good work Watchfinder.

I own the 2200.50.00 (45mm version of the original 2500 cal PO) and it could possibly be one of the best watches Omega has ever made. It's absolutely gorgeous, super accurate despite never being serviced for 10 years, and it has a timeless design that works in every situation with every outfit. Definitely a modern classic and one that I think will gain a lot more appreciation in years to come.

The older PO models have the perfect 42mm size, no orange lettering, and that cool thick silver ring on the inner part of the bezel. The new ones have Liquidmetal, far superior and groundbreaking in-house movements, and exhibition casebacks (my favorite). I wish I could get one with all of these elements so bad, it’d be the perfect watch.

svfutbol20 have you considered the Planet Ocean LiquidMetal Limited Edition? Omega released 1948 of these watches a few years back. It features 42 mm, liquidmetal bezel, slimmer cal 2500... but no display caseback. Maybe The Omega POLMLE is something for you?

Absolutely excellent video, as always. But respectfully; the silicon part in the movement is the balance spring. I have the PO 8500, and I too thought it was the escape wheel, cause it is black. But Omega says it is the balance spring; which is silicon because it is impervious to magnetic fields and retains its size and shape indefinitely.

Another excellent video! Thank you! I don't think Patek will ever compete in this arena for several reasons. Both the Aquanaut and the Nautilus are upscale and somewhat sporty, but their paltry 120m WR rating and lack of a rotating bezel keep PP squarely out of the heavy-duty category. Both models are more boating-to-office watches that compete more with the Aqua Terra, Datejust 41 and VC Overseas. They offer a pathetic 2 year warranty and a price point that is two to three times higher than Omega or Rolex. The metrosexual look is only going to appeal to those for whom the PP brand is paramount in their decision process. I think the AP Royal Oak Offshore probably occupies the space that PP should look to if it wants to enter the dive category.

I enjoyed my 2500 for a while, but was disappointed by the 8500. It may 'only' be a few mm thicker, but that heft is pretty ridiculous, and when you throw in a sapphire case back, it's even less comfortable. My 8500 was also less accurate than my 2500 which was disappointing. The applied markers being mirrored are hard to read in low light. And the choice to beat at 7bps rather than a more traditional 8bps looks less smooth. My second Planet Ocean also had the first generation ceramic, not the liquid metal, and as such, the bezel didn't even match the face, which is quite inexcusable. In short, I was so disappointed with my last Omega, that it was in fact my last Omega, and I moved to Rolex instead. Even if the Master Chronometer offerings and METAS stuff is good, I fear the horrific depreciation and endless slew of limited and/or special editions which further cheapen the brand. I was an Omega fan for several years and owned three pieces in all. But that last one really pushed me away. Now I'd be scared to give them another look.
@ripperx444
@ripperx444 6 лет назад
ZCT808 cool story but you are wrong. Applied markers are fully the watch is comfortable and resale value effects people paying full price. You know ou can buy an 8900 master chronometer for 3700 brand new from an AD right?
@Karsonbarnes11
@Karsonbarnes11 6 лет назад
Unless you got the very first coaxial (2500A) then it's the same beat rate as the 8500. Also very strange to hear your 8500 didn't keep very good time. It is the best running watch I have ever owned and one of the best that I have ever seen which is saying a lot as a watchmaker. The silicon hairspring and longer power reserve is a HUGE step up with the 8500. The new 8800 is much thinner and therefore the new seamaster 300s are more wearable (and other models) Rolex will always hold it's value better than omega, but usually that means you can get a good deal second hand or even at an AD. I don't think you should discredit them altogether yet. 🙂
