Our refurbished Yamaha U3A (1984) came last week. Immediately I sense the soul of the spirit. The tone is beautiful and we love it very much. I bought it mainly for my son and he love the touch and sound of it. Before this, we hv a Yamaha digital piano P121 (73 keys). I found my son loves playing the piano and I feel it is time to invest a good piano (within our budget) for him. I believe that it is always right to invest in music education for children. I thought of buying a silent U1 or U3 so that we can play at night, but way too expensive. And so, after much research and trying, we got this U3A. I don't know if this is true, but I feel the wood in the 70s and 80s are of better quality and also the build of the used pianos, somehow there is more impatience in building the pianos. That's why I hv no regrets. And interestingly, this piano came exactly on our wedding anniversary, one day in advance of the actual delivery date. Thank you for this video, come at the right time.

I have a U3 and it is still like new. I am hoping for the day when there is something in digital that sounds anything like it.

Excellent tutorial, I shopped several different stores today in the Austin area looking for a piano and just got completely overwhelmed with all of these subjects you guys discussed. Too bad I don’t live in the San Antonio area, this sounds like the place I need to buy from. Thanks for making this for us it was very informative and easy to follow

Regarding the used market, there is no used german upright piano in my area. People are not switching, they keep them. I can't say the same for Young Chang, Pearl River, Samick, Perzina that you can find with less than 20 years. 40 years Yamaha U1 and some Kawai. Forget > 60 years piano. Rare are the people who are really take care of their instrument.

The old adage is true - buy the best piano you can afford! In many cases, you can get a real quality-built piano from the 1990/2000s in excellent condition for the same amount of money that you would spend on a lower quality, new Asian production piano. $15-20,000 for a used Yamaha or Kawai grand built in Japan - or $15-20,000 for a new Samick or Pearl River etc. built in Indonesia or China? (You can get a serviceable used grand piano for a lot less!). Of course, if you're buying used have it first inspected by a piano technician - not just somebody who tunes pianos. In the final analysis, it comes down to personal preference.

Very interesting topic, when my son was five 7 years ago we were shopping for piano I should’ve done my research first, but being so naïve, I bought a brand new Yamaha upright, about 8,000 brand new. Not realizing he was gifted, we are already shopping for another brand new piano. We’re still looking, but had I known beforehand I would’ve got a better quality piano. I wouldn’t have to go out and buy another one. I should’ve bought the kid of violin. It would’ve been much cheaper. Lol… we’re still considering buying new but also considering used… thank you for the video it really helped us narrow things down….

I really like the Kawai KDP120 but pricing on second hand CN380s, YDP181s, and v series seems like they may be comparable and much less $$ than brand new.

It seems like the higher end digital pianos used sound like the current mid market or even entry level and are not in such high demand lowering the price. That seems like where the value is today. My Yamaha acoustic sounds better probably but it complains about the high humidity so I am thinking digital.

I need some help identifying an old baby grand I've acquired and can't find anything on the internet. Hopefully you can assist me. It's a Bauer Brothers New York ebony concert baby grand. Any help will be much appreciated. Gonna try and sell it but I have no idea what the value of it is. It's been in a storage locker for almost 10 years. I was told it is very old and has ivory keys. Thank you.

Interesting, actually I disgree on used pianos. If you want to help people, as opposed to getting their money/sales, first is to listen to their voice. Are they handy? Do they like technical details? Are they scared of details and being hands on? So if they are reasonably interested in details, then 500 EUR for a used accustic piano is idea for people starting. I would tell them, in this price range, please start by looking for: 1) good pin block, easy to tune, and stays in tune and 2) all the keys work. From there depending on how much of a hobby you want to have, learning about piano tuning, the sky is the limit, hammers can me replaced, new strings added, strike point adjusted, etc... ...its easier than programming a computer ))), but maybe a bit more involved than programming the time on a VCR.... With that said, sure, if they do not want to "know" about the inner workings of the very simple wood and metal piano, than a synthesizer/sample is ideal, agreed. But why would I even make this point of emphasis, because in my long history with music, and pianos and synths/samplers/sequencers/etc.... ....I would like to say that an accustic intrument is very, very much better for children, simply because it is more rich and rewarding musical experience.

ya, i got a 1955 5 foot grand for 500 clams. A Quidoz grand, very well made piano from montreal quebec, with ivory keys. all it needs is a regulation and a tune. I tried some digitals, and they suck, waste of money
