NEW VW UP! GTI - FIRST WASH & DETAIL!!!

This video shows you the process involved in carefully washing and detailing your VW up! GTI. This isn't meant to be a lesson in using a machine polisher or detailing - please search You Tube for that as I am sure there will be plenty out there. This is more to show you what's involved and not necessarily trying to show the best way of doing it as it was performed for the camera not to perform the job like a detailing freak.
Most people will of course leave the first wash to the supplying dealer but if you have the time and inclination, you can do a better job and get a lot of pleasure from doing so as I did.
Hopefully this video will inspire you to do what I did, invest in some relatively inexpensive equipment and keep your car looking like new during your ownership.
If you like what you see but find it impractical to do the same, then it's worth paying a detailer £200 or so for a 'New Car Detail' which will be similar to what I do in this video, making the car as shiny as possible and also well protected meaning that subsequent washing is easier.
Please note - while I welcome comments of all types, telling me the process falls short from detailing freak best practice is pointless because, as mentioned above this isn't a lesson in detailing. It's meant to inspire normal people to do a better job than main dealers and have some fun doing so, not enter the Cartier 'Style et Luxe' concours d'elegance at Goodwood Festival of Speed!!
Thanks for watching!

I love watching the detailing process on newer cars. Rocking a banger at the moment so I don't really care for the paintwork but when I get my next car, I will definitely tend to the detailing myself.

Hi NightcoreCentral, thanks for commenting. Worth practicing on the banger then you avoid any mistakes on your new car 👍

volkswizard problem is that where I live, there's too many pigeons that go around pooping on my car. After I wash it, the following day I'll see the birds have destroyed my car. That's why I'm frustrated in regards to the detailing process.

I enjoyed that. Well made and edited video. I had a 18 plate Daytona grey Audi arrive in March. Paint was in great condition no swirls or marks. I added a snowfoam clay glaze and sealant to my routine. A good tip is to wax the those wheels. I also pat my car dry, lay the towel down and lift off just in case and small dusts or grits get pushed about. Neighbours think I’m mad. Will make brake dust a lot easier to remove in the future. Quality motor too. I think the polo and golf have grown too much in weight regardless of power. The UP gti fills the gap missing from the 106 and 205 gti and Williams Renault of the 90s.. my car is the black Edition so comes with lots of black glossy parts like your wing mirrors. Take a look at Black Hole from Poorboys

My 'detailing' consists of wiping the sill area by the door occasionally to stop my trousers getting dirty. I ordered an up! GTI in March - in tungsten silver of course so I can't see the dirt - but I'm not expecting it to arrive before Xmas. Currently 'With the factory'.

Great advice in doing it yourself or having a pro do it, much better than dealerships efforts. Only thing I would change is I'd pull the tag off of the microfibre cloth.
@volkswizard
@volkswizard 6 лет назад
Hi Mike, well spotted re the tag, I swear I always remove these normally. The Quantum ones have them pretty well stitched in but the Autoglym ones tear off easily, always found it odd they bother with them at all! I'm not pretending to be a pro but with some care and time it's easy to do a much better job that the main dealer. 👍

350 miles in and it's better than I thought it would be. The first to videos were in the winter and the tyres just had no bite but on warm dry tarmac you can finally work the chassis and it's good basic fun! 65 mpg when having a bit less fun is nice too. Can't wait to hit 500 miles and start working that engine as it loves to rev. So..err...yes, I am enjoying it 👍

Got my white Up GTI on Friday even though the dealer received it in mid December. They suggested not registering it until January to not lose a year. Then because it’s the first one in my country it had to go through homologation. Dealer delivered it to me by driving it which ended up with dead bugs.

Another great video Andrew. The red paintwork really does shine! One of the highlights of a new car collection for me is getting it home and spending several hours making it pristine. I’ve always wanted to master the art of machine polishing but worried I’ll mess it up and damage the paint. Keep up the good work and as always, looking forward to your next video! Cheers.
@volkswizard
@volkswizard 6 лет назад
Hi VW UP GTI, thanks for commenting. It's worth learning to machine polish if only because sometimes it's the only way to get scratches out. You can't go to far wrong if you start with the lighty abrasive compounds. 3M do a green one which is called Fast Cut Plus I think and that does go through lacquer quite quickly and produces a lot of heat. But the biggest tip is to do it in the shade out of sun and to minimise dust which on a windy day can cover panels almost instantly. Try on a less precious car first, it really is one of the most satisfying things you can do, especially when you are restoring dull paint to a gleaming shine - better stop, I am getting excited :)

I'm so jealous. Apparently here in South Africa we won't be getting the Up! GTi. Very sad. I'm am however looking at a Clubsport S. South Africa received 47 units. Would be a nice upgrade from my Mk6 GTi.

It's cool that SA got 47 Clubsport S! It's a spectacular car, so different to the up! GTI in that it's hard to even get close to its limits on the road but they are both incredible GTIs, Mk6 is great too :)

Yeah apparently we have one of the biggest GTi markets here. With about 50% of all Golf sales being GTis. My mk6 is actually in for repairs since Friday, engine light came on and Volkswagen Cape Town called me today to tell me it's the Intake Flap Solenoid Valve or something like that. Paying R3500 (£220) for it. Looking forward to more videos on your Clubsport S sir. Beautiful Beast that car. Enjoy your reviews 👌

volkswizard it's more of way for them to find potential workers, but maybe they offer more for visitors. The best thing about the plant is the test track for SUVs, particularly the cable car for transportation of the cars between the test track and the factory. I have a little story about our VW. My parents bought their first car - VW Golf Mk3 Combi (Estate) in 1997 (made in Slovakia) as they wanted to buy a car, because my mother was pregnant with her first baby - me. 18 years later, after I got my driver's license, I drove around in that car.
@volkswizard
@volkswizard 6 лет назад
Great story! And I didn't know they made the Mk3 in Slovakia. The Mk4 Golf R32 was the first car I recall with the 'D' in the VIN and that was a superb car too and build quality was a match for WOB! Cable car at test track sounds incredible, now I really want to go! Might even take a job there if I can drive around the test track all day 👍

Will never buy a red car again as after a few years it fades and by 10 years old the plastic panels are turning pink despite regular waxing and polishing So now I have a black mk5 Golf GTI Great video
@volkswizard
@volkswizard 6 лет назад
HI Rob, thanks for commenting. I'm pretty sure recent VWs are a lot better. Originally red wasn't lacquered so the paint faded. Then from Mk3 is was lacquered and as long as it's not been repainted it should stay bright, especially with some TLC. The plastic are a different story but again I've not seen any evidence of this on original paint for many years, my wife has a red 2005 Mk5 and it gleams like my new up! although I suspect it was garaged so not necessarily a fair comparison. Black is nice too though but does take some maintenance, however it's my favorite colour when sparkling by far!

Fantastic job on the car, you have inspired me to do my own VW up GTI i've got most of the equipment but was wondering what's the name of the polishing pads that you used in the video? And where do you purchase them? Thanks
@volkswizard
@volkswizard 6 лет назад
Hi Terry, glad you enjoyed the video. The pads are from 3M, they are sold on Ebay. The compounds are also 3M and the pads are colour matched to the compound so green in harsh (unnecessary on a new car), yellow is medium (I used that) and blue is soft. The polisher is Dodo Juice spin doctor and has been brilliant since I bought it a few years ago. Best of luck :)

Nice tip top. But two or one thing I may avoid in future is that Bosch etc high pressure water cleaner. Rest cool. What tyre inflators do you own, I ordered Stanley jumpstarter, inflators etc all in one from us to India some 5 years back it Also has light, tyre inflator which was broken twice, returned finally cancelled the order and used that money bought iPad lol. Hyundai vs vw what are your thoughts.
@volkswizard
@volkswizard 6 лет назад
Hi Reddylion. I meant to say in the video that the Bosch pressure washer has been brilliant. I bought it in late 2016 and it's been used and abused regularly ever since. I'd previously used Karcher but in comparison they are junk and would have broken ages ago, they particularly dislike winters (in the the UK it can be well below freezing for a long time) . I've had to replace the hose twice but they are cheap and the main machine has been perfect. As for Hyundai, they are OK but like most Far Eastern cars, they seem to lack the soul of a European car (even though most of the key people at Hyundai have been headhunted from European brands). They aren't even much cheaper any more and the brand is a long way from having the deep down respectability of VW which keeps VW used prices strong and finance deals competitive due to lower depreciation rates. Still, competition is not a bad thing and will keep VW sharp :)
@Reddylion
@Reddylion 6 лет назад
volkswizard oh so it was Bosch washer you were using that's nice, it's the best...., your voice was low and music was loud so I actually dint concentrate. Was looking at the video more. What I meant is I wouldn't want to use pressure sprayers cause it may damage the paint etc in the long run ! Or maybe not but I was thinking of avoiding washing car with pressure. Not the brand actually, Bosch is doing fantastic till now even in India.. almost wanted to buy one, but nah.
@volkswizard
@volkswizard 6 лет назад
Ah, now I see what you mean! Pressure washers are good if used carefully. The Bosch has an adjustable jet which can be really high pressure (too high for cars), or twist it and it provides a softer, wider spray but still good pressure for cleaning. Without pressure washing, you will be rubbing a lot more dirt into the paint which causes swirl marks. Plus you can use the snow foam which softens the dirt even more, leaving just the bare minimum to get off with the wash mitt. In the UK this is important as salt is applied to the roads in the winter and this is really bad for the paint if rubbed into it during wash, mud is much the same too.
@Reddylion
@Reddylion 6 лет назад
volkswizard swirl marks hmm that's valid.. true, I am aware the pointed spray is the nastiest, paint is gone for sure , water spread nozzle mode least damaging and mud blaster. i got good quality water hose and gun for wash etc.. too many gadgets will only make my like complicated, as I am single.. I like to keep things simple.. or I maybe wrong cut all this crap and buy the damn Bosch sprayer lol... when I buy my new vw ameo tdi dsg or Hyundai verna, accent, crdi, auto Sx o . let's see where this goes.. nice vid.

Don't worry too much, it's an algorithm using very little data as there haven't been any sales at that mileage gauge a price from and geared to bidding too low rather making the mistake of offering too much and the complications that may arise from that. Yes.But it seems there is also stripe on black color. This is the picture from my dealer. - prntscr.com/jnodus You can see there is a black stripe. It's a real shame that they didn't go with red stripe for example. In my opinion, it is stupid to put black stripe on a black car :)

Interesting! The dealer pic is computer generated, the cars I have seen in the metal don't have the stripes. There is a photo of a black one here with no stripes.www.upownersclub.co.uk/forum/up-gti_topic8693_page18.html Also I've seen the VW UK press demonstrator that was recently in EVO magazine up close and there were definitely no stripes. All they need to do is what they did on the GTI Clubsport and Clubsport S (and Mk1 GTI) and use a contrast stripe like silver or grey, no excuse really.

If you buy a new car then have it treated with life shine at dealers, would then machine polishing etc later on (less than a year later) take all that product off . Would it be better just to do what you have done from the start?
@volkswizard
@volkswizard 6 лет назад
I wouldn't bother with any paint treatment from a dealer. Just pay a detailer to do the whole car after or just before delivery. That way the person doing the work gets paid enough to do the job properly without any middleman. Or do it yourself as per the video. You could use any sealant on top of the way, Autoglym do a good one if you want it to be longer lasting like Lifeshine. Lifeshine is a good product but you need to have it applied by someone you can trust to do it properly.

Hi Daniel, that is an interesting point. When you say wax do you mean wax? This can give it a lovely finish but on some cars it means the wiper don't work as well due to the oily residue from the wax. You can learn a lot about a car from washing it

I don't want to burst your VW bubble but I suppose you know that the up! is not made in Germany. It is assembled in Bratislava in Slovakia in the same factory as the Mii and the Citigo.

Hi Glenn, thanks for commenting. I might have been a bit tired by that point but I am pretty sure I said the paint was much better than on Wolfsburg cars so well done VW Bratislava.

I've enjoyed your reviews in previous videos but please either do some training in machine polishing technique or leave it to a pro. That arm speed and method just made me cringe... Nice car though.

Thanks Scala598. To be fair I was constrained by the camera angle, I wouldn't normally kneel to do the top of a wing. I should say it wasn't meant as a lesson in machine polishing (of which I am sure there are many on RU-vid) but simply to show what's involved. As a hands-on car dealer I've been machine polishing for around 15 years and even my 'un-professional' attempts can produce a significant improvement in a car's finish. I'm not saying I am an expert but equally I don't think I have to leave to the professionals, after all you to start somewhere and learning is part of the fun. Also with these soft compounds it's not easy to do damage so they are good place to start for beginners. But the most important thing is that I am very pleased with the result, even if it's been produced in an un-professional manner :)

Wow, what a lot of time and effort - not criticising, just that I am behind the times. I just use Turtlewax car shampoo and use a chamois leather to dry it and then turtlewax car wax. So perhaps I will invest in these microfibre thingys. And not use a bucket of water. I should use a hose. It looks like I'll have to spend a bit of money on all the cleaning products one day. Unfortunately I wrote off my Up! last week when a coach smashed into the back of me, so when I sort out the insurance rest assured, I'll buy a new one. Sorry, not a GTi, can't afford one! Hmm maybe a Tsi Beats edition?? In white.

Steve M yes if you have nothin* better to do then why not spend all day polishing but most of us have a life!

Hi Rob, I don't look forward to polishing but if you have a keen eye and can see marring of paintwork I don't like that either so it's simply a case of getting it protected and hopefully doing less work in the long term (see, I'm lazy really!)

Snow foam a dry car. Then rinse.
