We finish fitting our first watertight bulkhead, a huge upgrade from the zero watertight bulkheads in our, as original, 1977 Rival 38 Centre Cockpit Ketch.
We will be making the remaining original bulkhead watertight, adding one more and making the cabin entrance watertight to well above the waterline. This will create space to store our anchor chain a couple of meters further aft which should be great for stability and a better motion in waves. Note that we are not making any "unsinkable" claims!!! But we are creating a more useful space for us and improving both sailing and anchoring capabilities.
Here is the Boatword Today video on making templates: • BEST WAY I'VE FOUND TO...
Eventually, on top of all this, there will be a good sized adult berth and a smaller one for a child (although the cabin will normally be used for storage). That will come down the line as we prepare our 45 year old Rival 38 for a Sustainable Sailing retirement in a few years.
Two and a half years ago, when we bought Vida, she was in a very tired and damp condition with all original equipment and fittings (much of it not working). We have removed all the gas, diesel, and paraffin equipment as well as all the plumbing and electrics. We have composting toilets, are installing an electric motor and all electric cooking. We are fitting a huge solar array and probably a wind generator. We have replaced all the windows, removed all the headlining and more. We are replacing all the standing rigging with Dyneema synthetic rigging.
This is the biggest sustainability project of our lives as we prepare for a retirement when we want to cruise the world using zero fossil fuels on a very low budget.

Apologies, I had forgotten you have an on deck anchor well/locker. My Rival does not :-( Happy 'poxy-ing!

No problem 😊 There are quite a few variations across the models.

Hi. Another insightful vlog. I am interested in how will you be attaching (or maintaining) your pulpit and stem fittings to the hull if the fixings are not through the deck head behind your watertight bulkhead - or have you gone for fit once and worry not (like production boat manufacturers!) ? Cheers

Thanks! Our pulpit (which we are keeping) bolts are into the original anchor locker which is above this bulkhead and accessible from the deck. In some of the bow roller videos you can see the extra deck pads we have added for the pulpit. While we are making the opening to the anchor locker smaller due to the bigger bow roller and the windlass support we will still have access. We are changing our stanchions as they are a bit shorter than we feel is secure, several are quite bent too. We are making them from carbon fibre tubes. A smaller tube will be moulded through the deck that they drop onto. So no bolts to leak. I'll look up the Tula's Endless Summer video showing how they did it, we are essentially copying them.

This video shows the pads for the pulpit and how they relate to the anchor locker above the new bulkhead ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-5KRbUTl-1TU.html
