NEW! Exploding Dendrites! In todays video tutorial we are going to explore an exciting new twist on an almost forgotten acrylic pouring technique. Dendrites! Dendrites are really cool effects that you can create using acrylic paints or India inks . The science in this one is really cool. The paints and or inks fractal out to look like tree branches and or snowflakes. And the colors? Oh sweet baby Jesus they are gorgeous and so cool to watch. The brand I like best for India inks are Dr. Martin's Bombay brand. They sell many different colors in your local hobby stores or here amzn.to/3KboTWj. For acrylic paints the brand that works the best and is pretty much effortless is the Golden High Flow line amzn.to/44TI8f4 .
Typically you just put a drop of ink or paint on the canvas and then add a drop of 91% Isopropyl Alcohol to it for exploding colors to form however in today's video I also test regular tube paint and dry pigments. In the end i was able to create a magical piece of art and I beg you to please try this. Here is how I did it!
I thinned down some bright aqua green acrylic paint [liquitex brand] with some water until it flowed off the stick and left no mound of the surface of the paint in the cup.
I poured that paint on the canvas and tilted it around until the canvas was covered.
I then added drops of ink or my pigment mixture [ 1/4 teaspoon dry pigment, 4 dropper fulls of a coordinating ink color and water to thin] to the canvas and put 1 drop alcohol on top. I waited 2 minutes, added another drop ink and or pigment color, 1 drop alcohol and continued to rotate between the 2 products until I was happy with the dendrite it created. Please be patient with formation of dendrites. This takes time so give it a few minutes to form.
For acrylic paint I used high flow paints which as you saw really didn't need alcohol but it is perfectly fine to use it. If you use a tube paint make sure it is extremely thin. I would experiment with just water or water and a pouring medium to thin the paint down.

This is wonderful. Can you try the pigments with just alcohol instead of the India Ink? What other brand is high flow besides Golden? I love your painting. Thanks for sharing.

That's gorgeous. When I first started pour painting, I did one that formed dendrites... accidentally. I learned it was because my paints weren't equal in consistency. But, being new to acrylic pouring, I thought I was making a mistake rather than deciding I liked the results. Learning to go with the flow, no pun intended, has been a learning experience.

This was *fabulous* content! Because I want to use these for skins, I paint on silicone or plastic so I can peel it off when dry. I can’t use water to thin because it completely separates (and that’s an understatement). So I used liquitex with Amsterdam white and then followed Tammy’s instructions to a “T”. It worked perfectly!! I wish I could post a pic, I just love the effect!

Have you tried adding the alcohol after your creation is complete and dry? I’m curious. I suppose I could try it on my own, however I was wondering if you had already attempted that. Thanks in advance and have a wonderful day.😊

I have a question please. And I am really intrigued with this process. I should have recalled it because of my son, doing this kind of art in grade school, and they taught about chemistry etc. But my question is this: Have you ever done this with house paint, as a pillow instead of thine out white acrylic paint? I already ordered my Bombay inks, and will try this soon. I will make mention of you, so people can see your channel. Thanks for sharing this...
