I’m a new Ham and I bought this radio as my first radio. It’s a FANTASTIC and quality radio for 2m and 70 cm bands. Even me, brand new around amateur radios, I figured it out in a couple of days.
I bought one of these. It quit in one week. So, I bought the FTM-200 instead. I love it. I have one in the car and one in the shack. The FTM-200 is not true dual receive though, but still has APRS and it works great. I love the PMG mode and the band scope feature. THanks for posting.
Really useful video. I've had my eye on this radio since it was announced. Once lockdown is over and I can get back home to Canada, It'll be on my short list.
Greetings from Venezuela, again the YAESU brand, surprises me with a new and cute "toy" ... It will be time to try it to see how it does in "the battlefield", 73 of YV2ESB
Had this radio now for 3 weeks. I love it too. Only beef is the size of the screen. Could be a little bigger or have a zoom/magnification feature.Setting repeater operation features like PL frequency is tiny and commonly used. Other than that, the radio is Aces. Good video thanks!
You know I need to stop watching these channels, I keep seeing new radios that I want, but can’t afford. Thank you for the information and options you provide.
I cannot wait to get my HAM ticked. I will take the Technician test next month. I had to get an FCC FRN number. The test monitors sent me an e-mail with the e-mail address to get the FRN that is required now to take the test. Something new?
It's really just because of all the Privacy concerns nowadays. So you do not have to give ur SS number.Luckily I had already got my FRN # before taking my test few weeks ago.
I use Sennheiser CX350BT it’s connects to 2 Bluetooth devices at the same time I am using the IPhone 12 Mini & Yaesu ft3d ). I can listen to music on my iPhone and monitor for phone calls and the Yaesu ft3d will audio interrupt when RX. Turn Siri off on iphone then the ( Siri button ) on CX350BT to transmit on Yaesu then ( Play / Pause button ) on CX350BT stop transmission on Yaesu. Sounds pretty good too !
I like my Yaesu radios I currently have and don't really have a need for this radio. I have a FTM 400, a 100, and a few ht's - all fine radios and all made in Japan. FTM 300 is made in China. Has some cool features, but really should be $150 less than the current asking price if not actually made in Japan IMHO.
I've had mine for several months and the only problem I've had is that sometimes it is slow to lock onto the GPS satellites. Other than that its been performing just fine. I did have another problem... my water bottle slid off of my car seat and bumped into the display, so now its not readable in the center portion of the display.
@@N4DJC I've seen so many claims about the 300 being made in China, I wonder if maybe one specific model is, or if early versions were. "Made in Japan" is right there on my base unit, too.
Hi Eric, Thanks for all your videos, I love them!!! I need your advice. new in HAM, upgraded to General, and planning to buy my first mobile. After a lot of research and within my budget I'm between the IC-5100 & the FTM-300D. I'm very inclined to the Icom but concerned about the life of the touch screen. Any suggestions between these two radios? Keep up your great job!
Cool gear for sure! But does it do cross band repeat? Or with it's voice recording function, can it operate as an in-band repeater? (For emergency use)
We buy Yaesu, Icom Kenwood because we feel that we're getting a higher quality radio than the Chinese brands. When these brands start offering Chinese built radios rather than Japanese, there won't be much of a benefit to buying Icom, Kenwood and Yaesu anymore. I hope the big three take that into consideration.
Thanks for your video. I am looking at VHF/UFH mobile. I originally was leaning toward FTM-400 but the price kept going up and no Black Friday deals. This 300 looks interesting to me. I wonder how often i need to view the screen while mobile. I am mostly going to select a repeater and then just talk on it as I drive,I would expect. Maybe you have some other ideas as you have been doing mobile for a while. I see that Bluetooth is included in the 300 where it is an option in the 400. I have a Anytone 878 for an HT which will be my initial VHF mobile ( I have a Lido mount for my HT) while I research this. My first priority is for HF mobile with something like the FT-891 with HamSticks at first before I go down the screwdriver decisions. I love your channel and how you told us your story of being with CB back in the day (I was heavily into CB in the 70’s). I also like solar so we could have a good time over a drink one day! All the best, 73 de KI5HXM
hi i would like to know if you have tried to use the FTM-300 in wires-x PDN DIRECT MODE as i have read reports that there is a well known problem with the audio reception quality in this mode(warble)
The feature I miss the most is the memory banks. Eric, if you have contacts with Yaesu, please get involved! I really don't understand why my FT3DE has this feature and the FTM300 doesn't. 73, de HB3XVA
In my truck I have the ICOM 2730A mounted with the T Head power cable run from the battery. After my last overland trip I now know I need APRS function on a mobile unit and not the HT I have. WOULD I BE ABLE TO USE THE 2730 POWER CABLE FOR THE FTM-300? THEY ARE BOTH THE T HEAD STYLE? I just hate running wires through the firewall!
At least on the FTM-400 you can use other BlueTooth headsets by changing the default password in radio to "0000" which is the default of a lot of BTheadsets. At least for my cheap Chinese headset, but mic quality isn't all that great. Keep in mind the when you transmit with BT headset, the audio on the handehle mic maybe on too. So for best sound, hold the mic away from your face or cover the mic port with your finger.
Great, informative video....but Yaesu missed the mark on this.... if I'm in the market for a dual band that isn't bare bones, I will spend the extra $100-ish to get the FTM-400
That has got to be the most messed up memory scheme I have ever heard of. Tell me how to scan only a set of 12 mixed VHF and UHF repeaters in Tampa, drive into Orlando and want to only scan 15 other VHF/UHF repeaters with duplicates having different tones, run thru Vero, into Ft Lauderdale in and out of Miami to spend the night in the keys. What do we have here, potential two hundred repeaters from start to end? All my rigs I have owned had memory banks to select and scan independently. The engineer who designed this memory system needs to have it handed to him and sent packing with a new resume. Am I missing something?
So is there any way to make the display button bring up the compass page rather than the band scope? Having to always go into display setting to make a change that is only temporary is a huge hassle. I think this is needed in a firmware update.
Has Yaesu upgraded the volume control potentiometers for the FTM-300? The potentiometers used for the two volume controls on the FTM-400DX had a cheap flimsy loose movement compared to the volume controls on other quality radios. When you turned them, they feel as if they were snatched out of the bargain bin from a Chinese factory. They were not up to the standards of a high quality reputable manufacturer. Otherwise, I love my FTM-400XD, a great radio, but the movement and feel of the two volume control knobs is embarrassingly cheap! I really hope the FTM-300 doesn't suffer this same problem.
IT IS NICE TO SEE A NEW VIDEO FROM YOU ERIC, GOD BLESS MY BROTHER FROM N3NDX, AND YES I HAVE THAT RADIO.........I WATCHED THE PREMIRE VIDEO OF JASON AT HAM RADIO 2.0 SHOW THE RADIO . I ORDERED THAT DAY GOT IT 25 HOURS AT MY DOOR , NO FREAKEN JOKE..... LOVE IT...// ...07-07-2020-20:56 HRSE.S.T......
I'm trying to get a unit that will allow me to do person to person intercom in head phones 2 people in one car. also radio out incase of emergencies. could you recommend something needs to be small. headsets for motorcycle helmets
It looks like Yaesu did discontinue all of their budget Fusion radios. And it's not much cheaper than the 400. I was hoping to get a 7250 for basic base station operations.
With the FTM-100 now discontinued, this then becomes the cheapest HRI-200 node compatible transceiver that Yaesu sell. Unless they have something cheaper up their sleeves. Personally, I'd love to see a new FTM-7250 version that could be connected up to a HRI-200 node. I always thought having a FTM-100 or FTM-400 attached to a HRI-200 was a massive waste of a transceiver. I really just want a plain and simple transceiver acting as the Digital RF portion of the WiRES X Gateway.
I love the screen on my FTM-400DX, but wish they had used a bit smaller characters to allow for more characters. Memory is so cheap these days it would have been nice to give a better description of repeaters. Or possible give the option of switching between larger and smaller characters on the display would have been perfect,
Yaesu needs to build better rugged dualband tranceivers. Without screaming pig fan cooling. Just like motorola. RF Power settings from 1 Watt. 9k6 Packet port on it. N connector. Big audio speaker.
@@HamRadioConcepts Oh, I was told by a couple people that have one on wires-x that it did have cross band. I can't find it in the documentation, but did see a video where someone put it into cross band repeat mode. I don't have the radio, so I don't have a foot to stand on, I was just wondering. Thanks for the reply though.
The FTM-300D has a Crossband-Repeater mode! :-) It doesn't support C4FM to C4FM crossband, as the Fusion protocol doesn't allows a repeater to repeat a repeater. But it allows Analog to Analog or C4FM to Analog.
No way for Chinese one doesn't matter how it is labeled. I am glued to US made radios for HF and Japanese for VHF/UHF gears. Sorry. Anyway many thanks for that video!
@@raoulduke5690 the FT-4X we get in the US is made in Japan. It’s a direct conversion so the “radio on a chip” used is probably made in China. I’ve not looked at the internals of the newest Icom direct conversion HT’s but I suspect they are similar. Icom is a major user of AKM semiconductors, so may be Japanese. The 300 is a really good radio.
