One of my favorite Tango pieces is 'Oblivion' by Astor Piazzolla. I first heard it with Gidon Kremer's version last September, and kept listening to it on loop for a whole month before realizing that it was one of Piazzolla's most beloved songs.
Astor Piazzolla is an Argentinian composer who became prominent about 30 years after Carlos Gardel. He started incorporating jazz and classical music to the traditional tango sound, and created a new genre called 'Tango Nuevo'. He left behind more than a thousand tango pieces.
'Oblivion' is a song often described as haunting and atmospheric, yet embodies the depth of the soul of Tango. Here is Kremer's version, from his 1996 album, 'Hommage A Piazzolla & Peterburschsky'.
