Actually is not every drone, it's a "hive" programing. Imagine your screen, each pixel is a drone, you can program them all to act like pixels, some of them are turned off, some of them on on different colours. The data that you send to the drones is calculated at a very fast pace and each drone is already on position, they just have to be either off or on, and if on they have to be a specific color.

yeah its impressive to see, but not all that difficult really.

X,Y,Z GPS grid positioning, each device just needs to follow a plotted flight path, computing power required is actually very little.

I bet you he lost around 70drones during this performance in the process lose roughly around 2%< if good! And each one costs around 2k-3k to make that's without all the programming involved.

They probably tested the logic of the drones in a virtual environment like Unity or Unreal for example. They are 3D game engines. A 3D game engine is mainly used for game development, but you could test virtual drones in it before a live show with actual drones like this in real life for example.

My guess is smaller scale similar tests.

as comments above mentioned, all you need is a much smaller scale test to prove that the method of controlling the drone works. (the drones act like pixels and can be programmed to operate as a hive-mind, being able to re-create shapes from a computer program.
