Hello everyone welcome back to another video!
My name is Lisa and it is New Years Eve here in Japan. I am in Sapporo, Hokkaido.
I’m heading over to the subway station now to catch a train. The train ride takes about 5 minutes and there are very clear signs directing everyone to the shrine. From the station it would be a further 10 minute walk to reach it.
Hatsumode 初詣 is one of the most important traditional annual events in Japan. It literally means "the first shrine visit", so basically, hatsumode is to visit a shrine to pray for good luck for the new year. It typically happens on the first 2-3 days of January, and in my case, 1st of January right after midnight countdown!
The Hokkaidō Shrine is a Shinto one that enshrines four gods including the soul of the Emperor Meiji. The road leading to the main entrance to the Shrine is lined with beautiful stone lanterns. I am now in line waiting to enter the shrine. The snow is so powdery and light! And look! There’s the moon there.
I can see the main entrance of the shrine. Special thanks to Cavin for the photos because they are better than mine hehe. After praying you can proceed to get your Omkuji おみくじ which is a fortune telling tradition in Japan. They have the English version here, So that’s really great and it looks so pretty too! And there you the fortune for different aspects of your life all laid out for you. Next you can get Omamori 御守 / お守りJapanese Amulets for luck and protection as well as write your wishes on Ema wooden plaques.
After the shrine visit, I need food! and over here is a huge area filled with many food stalls offering festival staple foods of all sorts.
I need to get myself some hot yakisoba, I’m really freezing cold and it’s been quite a fair fews hours since dinner.
The area is really big! Look at this! It’s just the entrance, there are still lots of side roads and corners offering more goodies! Yakisoba: This is heaven, the yakisoba at this store is so thick and rich! Totally approved. Lost for words, hence the need to voice over hehe.
You can’t really tell but they gave me a lot of mayo, and I really needed that,
Oh you can the mayo stuck on the lid. And of course, I’m not going to waste that. Mayo is life. As I’m eating this, snow is falling into my noodles so I have to eat it quick before it gets all runny!
There are some choc bananas, Pretty sure that chocolate is crunchy in this temperature. It’s -2 degrees Celsius.
I am a huge fan of Karaage - which means fried chicken. The ones in japan have a very distinct taste, a very deep kind of flavor. Just look at that sexy color. It is superbly tender and extremely juicy inside.
There’s a long line at a particular stall, wonder what they’re queuing up for ?
It’ says Cheesu, which means cheese Korean pancake.
It looks so good with the crispy cheese and seaweed. Wonder what else is in there? I’m getting one.
Here it is! It’s all hot and steamy. I’m going to eat it now.
It’s getting crowded now as more and more people have paid their to the shrine and are out to enjoy the rest of the night with great food.
There's a shop sells amazake, which is a hot and sweet sake that has a milky appearance. Another shop sells takoyaki! - they look really frozen.
It hasn’t stopped snowing at all tonight. The sky has taken on this reddish color, I have no idea why! Can someone tell me? It’s incredibly creepy and very cool at the same time!
We are on our way out now, walking back to the station.
I had a really fun time tonight and it’s such a wonderful experience.
The time now is 1.35am. We are waiting for the train back to the hotel.
Thanks guys for coming along with me today, remember to subscribe and hit that notification bell! I’ll see you in the next one! Bye!!
