After last year's toned-down celebration due to the lockdowns, we were really excited to get to enjoy our first real German New Year's Eve, and it was amazing! We added some German traditions to our celebration and were able to experience the chaos of the fireworks spread out over the entire city (and the video can't even do them justice). We really feel like experiencing a New Year's Eve in a German city should be a bucket list item - it really is special!

For sure not fireworks. Just a waste of money and a burden to animals and nature.

@@geneviere199 Yeah, I have mixed feelings on the fireworks. I love them and love to watch them, but between the animals, the environment, and the cost (over 100€ million each year?!) it does seem hard to justify. Maybe one really great professional show instead of the mass chaos? I have a hard time seeing a lot of the German people giving up their fireworks though - seems to be a very big deal here.

@@OnwardMJ The best fireworks I have seen were on an American Army ground for a 4th of July festival. My son is born that day and we used to tell him that this fireworks are just because of that... ;) I know that there is a lot people that have fun with it - but there is a lot things I might have fun with that are forbidden, too. Personal freedom starts there were others aren't harmed or bothered. It would be fine if it just would be that one hour in the night - maybe an extra hour in the afternoon so kids that are supposed to sleep at noon have the chance, too. But here it bombed all through the day every 5 minutes.

@@geneviere199 4th of July festivals can be amazing with the professional displays often set to music. We had a huge one in the city we lived in and it was always a great experience. It does get quite crazy here starting in the afternoon and not really stopping until around 2am. Plus the random explosions over the entire next week. It's cool to experience but it certainly has some downsides.

I had the impression here in Augsburg that it was even crazier than before Covid. Maybe we all had to compensate for a lot of shit, hehe. Let's hope the fireworks in the first night will stay the craziest thing in 2023. Happy New Year!

I was surprised how much there was here last year considering there was a ban, but it does make sense that people went in a little extra this year to let off some steam from the last few years. I wouldn't mind if that is the craziest thing of the year - hoping for a calm and peaceful year! Schönes Neues!

If you go into the middle of the city, like the main place either wear a hoddie with the hat on. or dont wear a hoodie. You must be careful if there is a place on your clothing where fireworks can be trapped. Its not that big of a deal if some sparks hit but if something gets trapped in your clothing it can be dangerous. Usually the city center is a warzone. Its better to stay away from such a spot and look for a nice hill or something with a family.

Dinner for one 😍😁My dad would watch it over and over again on new years eve, because every TV channel played it several times a day 😀 Haven't watched it for a while, but maybe we will start this tradition again next year 😁 I am also not a big fan of fireworks, because of safety reasons. But I was shocked that it was ok to shoot (with a real gun) into the air in North Carolina were we spend our new years eve😅 which I think is even more scary 😬 Happy New Year 🎉

Yeah, Americans often do some reckless things in the name of a good celebration. I'm thankful to never have been at a celebration that involved people shooting their guns into the air - those bullets come down somewhere! 😯 We watched Dinner for One twice in a row since one of my daughters missed the first time, and we were all laughing both times. It's silly but enjoyable. Happy New Year!

@OnwardMJ Also a tradtion I know of is listing the 9th Symphony from Beethoven which is stream in the TV from the Gewandhaus. Most Germans eat Raclette on Silvester and do Bleigießen the more healthy version Wachsgießen. The little figures you get predict the next year.

Oh, I didn't know about Beethoven from the Gewandhaus! I'll make sure to check that out next year. Raclette seems fun, my wife did that with some friends a few weeks ago and it was enjoyable. And I just read about lead pouring (and the alternative versions)...might have to try it out!

The big downside of fireworks? The emergency rooms are full on New Years Eve. And hand surgeons have to do many extra hours of work. The biggest downside? One 17yo kid died of that here in Leipzig. So there are many movements to forbid fireworks for private persons in Germany.

I saw that - absolutely horrible. We started hearing some of the stories a few days after New Years about some of the accidents and some of the attacks. We were watching from our balcony and while it's really cool to see, we kept thinking about the crazy high risk of injury. As unique of an experience as it is, I would still be ok with a large professional show replacing the chaos of everyone on the streets blowing things up. It would be nice to feel safe going out to an event on New Years instead of hiding in our house!

also balcony arent save u where lucky Lucky no one messed up a rocked stard or thought its funny to throw a minuture dynamite from polen into your balcony or that ur apartment was high enough this year police men and women where attacked with explosives and a lot of drunk people blew them self up again it s all seams nice at first till something happens can be a family Pet dying from panic a ptsd suffering neightbor nearly killing someone ur roof seting on fire ur car

I can understand that. This was our first time seeing it, so we found it really funny. And I guess it depends on how much you like slapstick comedy. After we finished watching it, we decided to throw on some classic Three Stooges, and we enjoyed that for a while. But yes, I suppose I can see that it could get old...But tradition and nostalgia are powerful, so I can understand that people would still watch it year after year.

@@YukiTheOkami yeah, I can understand all those things. Although I haven't heard any of the details or stories from the negative side of it. While I do think it's a really cool experience, I would also enjoy one big professionally controlled event too. For Independence Day in the US, we always tried to avoid 'private' fireworks events and stuck with the official events.
